It's a curse to host these events especially for these smaller countries.

I will elaborate once I get inside. On my phone.

I saw where the Australians had to evacuate because of a fire alarm only to go back in after half an hour to realize...

A) their laptops and clothing had been stolen

and

B) the fire alarm wasn't even functional

:lol :lol :lol :lol

This is what trying to be fair to everyone gets you... a ****ing dangerous disaster.

Never ever give the Olympics to 3rd world countries. Going by past trends, Olympic venues normally turn to shit and deserted.

In an effort to help 3rd world countries such as Brazil....they have actually done more harm to them because of the money spent.

Beijing was a successful Olympic and one of the best of all time but take a look at the venues now.

Birds nest and that fancy swimming complex....look at it now. Remember when it was all great on TV?

If big countries can host them and abandon their venues afterwards look what it will do to Brazil. The waste. Heck, the WC stadiums look like shit too.

their economy could have been driven by the olympics held every 4 years in greece
that is no question the best point i've seen so far.

as in-- the greeks invented the olympics and made the games famous for hundreds (or thousands?) of years. now that the greek economy is struggling, wouldn't it be nice to give them a tip o the hat by returning their fabulous invention back to them?

the real point is that financially, you can set up sports venue buildings in athens that can be used over and over again, year after year.

meaning, the citizens of all the countries who hosted the games in the past don't have to keep paying money for the bullshit upkeep of dead, useless facilities.

and the corrupt, money-chasing olympic committees who make an art out of bleeding the local taxpayers in cooperation with the local scam artists (*cough*) regents in charge, might actually be forced to find honest work for a change!

what do you think about THAT plan, duderinos?

Never understood how the Olympics gets so much revenue to do all this.

Do they get big rating numbers for relay races? Diving? Javelin throw? Nobody has any interest in that stuff for 3 years and 11 months. Do they really get that many people watching these things in the Olympics to justify these massive budgets??

I mean it's cool if they do. It just surprises me.

Build a permanent Olympic facility in Greece, and in first world countries in Asia, North America and maybe...another European location and rotate them. NO more bidding and wasting money and lessen corruption. Keep them in first world countries that can afford them and have the infrastructure. Greece only gets one because they invented them.

They literally had to call the FD to have them cut the chains off the gate because apparently someone forgot the keys..

Lol wtf. As an athlete, how could you feel safe?

Second this.

Instead of bailing them out with the tax dollars of other countries, give them a chance to make some money through one of their own traditions. Let them have every other summer Olympics and every other winter Olympics or somethin like that.

This shit is an embarrassment.

the olympics is the oldest, most famous and premier sporting event in the world. every sub-sport therefore gets magnified in importance and the extended nature of the event greatly enhances nationalistic fervor and competition between nations. also, there's so much going on that the TV / media coverage can be pretty much 'best of' and highlights for the entire event, plus they can throw in all kinds of additional stuff, like analysis and human interest stories and all that.

even the traditionally low-popularity stuff, like basket weaving on ice, suddenly becomes intriguing because they can show you just enough to pique your fancy but not enough to bore the average audience. getting the olympics is huge for any TV network and therefore worth lots of revenue for everyone involved.

so basically you have the olympic committee and local organisers chasing major shares of that sweet, sweet money. maybe some of them actually care about the integrity of the event and about the impact on the local region, but clearly they are in the minority. this is similar in the way major sports leagues collude with franchise owners and city officials to bilk the tax-payers and sports fans out of billions of dollars on an ongoing basis. sort of the donald trump model of business, except they don't tend to abandon the project after making their cut.

for sure i'm missing some of the details, but i think that's the gist of it.
