View Full Version : What kind of shaving razor do you use? (How many blades)

Hi, friends. Akrazotile here. Doing a little bit of market research.
I'm in the process of setting up a functional online store that Boycotts Political Correctness. The newly acquired web team will be working on the set up this week. (What I've linked you to in the past was just my rudimentary attempt at a temporary do-it-yourself version).
Anyhow, I've decided to begin my foray into 'politically green' commerce by joining the razor wars. There have been a number of online razor merchants sprouting up recently, but none of them offer the political principles and consumer commitments that I do. The plan is pretty simple and straightforward. I buy a bunch of razors wholesale, and provide them at the same price every other place does - but I state my principles publicly, I don't lobby politicians, I don't shy away from controversial topics if they're important, I permit any hired employees to have free speech, I do not grovel to facebook crybabies if there's something they dont like, etc. You guys know the spiel by now, I've given it here before.
But if I'm able to carve out a bit of success in the razor market, then hopefully I can expand further to other simple things like dress socks, beach towels and other textiles, and slowly build a more full service business. Now, DON'T WORRY - I'll still have bumper stickers. But the idea is to start changing what kind of businesses our dollars go to.
Anyhoooo, what I'm trying to determine now is what type of razors most people prefer to shave with. 2 blade, 4 blade, 6 blade?? Any feedback is helpful. Also, please don't feel that answering here means you're endorsing my idea or giving any implication that you'll buy a razor from me. Just the simple info on your preferences is helpful to me.
Thanks guys!

Making razors political... Is nothing sacred anymore? :facepalm
Anyway, I think companies like Dollar Shave Club buy their razors in bulk from Dorco (http://www.dorcousa.com/) and then sells packages for a profit.
Personally I tried Harry's (https://www.harrys.com/) after a free trial offer and was very impressed. 5 blades, smooth shave, and the presentation and package was a nice touch. So stuck with them, 8 new razors every few weeks for like $15. Helluva deal.
The razors are liberal doe. :crazysam:

Yeah, the razors offered by DSC seem to be available in 2, 4, and 6 blade, but to me anything over 5 just seems like overkill. If I need more than that I'll shave with a cheese grater. Of course, I have weak, neckbeard-grade facial hair, so maybe 6 blades is useful for some peeps.
Far as the razors, they can be as liberal or non-liberal as they like. Just like their USERS can be as liberal or non-liberal as they like. Just like FUTURE EMPLOYEES, OF THIS GREAT ENTERPRISE, CAN BE AS LIBERAL, OR NON-LIBERAL AS THEY LIKE, AND THEY DON'T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE FOR IT.
That's the beauty of it. THIS is liberty. THIS is independence.

Nice. You mind my asking what that kind of package goes for altogether at Costco?

It's lasted me over a year. I just double checked, it was the razor and 16 cartridges (4 razor heads per sleeve). It came out to around $75.

I used to use a knockoff brand for awhile. They were so bad. One day it was awkward because I had to shave really quickly in the morning and clearly had a few red marks on my face from razor burn. I'm pretty sure my coworkers chuckled a bit when I came in.
Now I use mach 3 sensitive razor. They last probably 7-10. I trim my beard now on before I shave so it's a lot easier (when I decide to grow it thick) but usually I just shape up my beard twice a week for about 5-10 mins each.
Many women have told me I look way better with a beard especially if it's well maintained. I gave in.
I used to love being clean shaven but I look like I'm 18 instead of what I really am, 23.
A single blade (old school) type of razor are considered the best for a clean shave but I remember my barber explaining to me why people prefer them (he might have just tried selling to me too lol idk). If you know how to use it correctly, can't beat the ability to be fully clean shaven with someone who knows what they're doing with it.

Used to be the Gillette Fusion, but I switched to the Schick Hydro 5.
The replacement cartridges are much cheaper, I get mine from Target.

Yep exactly. If you know how to use them, can't go wrong with them. I've gotten it once at a high end barbershop before a fancy party and was shocked how well they did. I had no redness or small tiny bumps like I usually do and they go deeper it seems into the hair follicles and take out even the most stubborn little stubbles that are impossible to take out with a mach 3 razor.

Mach 3 is good outside of safety razors. More than 3 blades always gives me bumps, but I like how the mach 3 is morning-tiredness proof.
the only good thing about the 4 (or 5?) bladed ones is they have that thing that you can shave the hairs up near your nose with.

Personally I use a regular Gillette Mach 3 with the metal/rubber handle. And a single straight razor for the edges. 1 cartridge will last me about 1 month if I'm diligent in rinsing it off, then dumping it in alcohol. The biggest reason blades get dull is not because you shave and cut skin/hair with them, it's because the water left on them after rinsing them corrodes the blade edge and makes it rough. Rinsing in alcohol then drying the blades with a towel (or in my case I use a single square of toilet paper) prolongs them and keeps corrosion away. Usually for me the blade will still shave completely fine, but the moisturizing stripe on the blades will already be gone after 5 or 7 shaves.
A lot of times you can find 20-25 cartridge packs on eBay for like $20, compared to buying 5 or 6 at Walmart or whatever the $20.
I use a safety razor. My skin gets irritated pretty quickly and my hair is coarse, so shaving with a single blade just doesn't give me skin irritation the way those 5 bladed razors do. It also works a lot better on a three day stubble that the modern razors do. On the other hand it requires a bit more time and good technique.
Blades are like 5 cents a piece, so that's nice.
