This is a touching story (although I can see why it was so easy for his Financial Advisor to take $$$ from him)

Duncan once spent $12K to save stranger's dog

Tim Duncan is a future Hall of Famer with a big heart.

The following story was posted on Reddit over a year ago, but somehow never went viral until Saturday, when it was discovered by Pounding the Rock's Quixem Ramirez. The Redditor claims that Duncan once footed the bill for her dog to undergo life-saving surgery:

I met Tim Duncan in Denver shortly after having been told that my dog had liver cancer and the surgery was going to cost $12,000. I was crying and visibly upset and after explaining to him what was happening, he offered to pay for the entire operation. As a single mother working 3 jobs to make ends meet, I had no chance of keeping my best friend alive. This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.

The Redditor didn't reveal how surgery went, but hopefully the dog is still alive and doing well.

I mean I'm not anti-pets, but how about some priorities. Jeez.

You underestimate the morale a pet can bring to someone who is a single mother working three jobs, along with her children.

Stop looking at the world from such a cynical point of view.

True, a dog actually helped my mom so much in overcoming her depression and anxiety.

And considering there probably isn't a male in the house, a dog can be a protector as well

good thing he didn't donate the $12k to cancer research. Clearly a dogs life is more important than finding a cure for a disease.

:facepalm

I love to see stories like this. Tim Duncan is a great human. Animals are the best.

I like dogs, but if this lady is single and working three jobs, that probably means none of her jobs are good. And she has kids whose future she has to be concerned with.

Im just saying, before you commit to buying dog food and dog shampoo and veterinary visits and dog grooming etc on a regular basis, maybe figure out what the hell is going on first. Dogs are great, but I dont think they should be a financial priority for people already struggling to make ends meet.

I think you have a very real and valid point. People who are struggling to make ends meet most likely don't have the extra funds to buy dog food, grooming, vaccinations, getting the dog spayed and neutered, so the dogs might suffer in that way. When those expenses become to much, most people just abandon the animal in the streets. The flip side is at least this dog is in a home with people who, hopefully, love and care for the animal. It seems this is one of those cases, thankfully. I'm sure the dog would take being a little underfed over sitting on death row in a pound any day.

Duncan's mother died from cancer, he donated about a quarter-million to cancer research.
