View Full Version : Whiteside on free agency, 'I really don't think it's about loyalty'
Hassan Whiteside said Sunday he is considering a variety of factors beyond a return to the Miami Heat as he deliberates his destination in NBA free agency.
Those factors, he said, would be weighed along with the Heat helping put himself in position to go from earning slightly less than $1 million this past season to in excess of $22 million next season.
"I really don't think it's about loyalty," the shot-blocking center said while making an appearance at "Dew NBA 3X," a nationwide three-on-three basketball competition that made a weekend stop at the National Young Arts Foundation. "I think it's just about the best situation for myself and that's what I think it is."
Whiteside said he is hopeful of having a decision by the end of Friday's opening day of free agency and acknowledged that the Heat have taken advantage of this period for exclusive contact before he can be contacted by outside teams.

I feel like he's gonna be a headache once he gets paid anyway. Lose his motivation.

Might still be worth the Lakers max. Most likely a new amnesty clause with the next CBA. If he can't be traded if he gets lazy, he can most likely be waived.

He's right. Loyalty is overrated. Get the money where you can.

This
These GM traded their players if they became washed up and injury prone like Derrick Rose.
Maximize your earnings when you are young, and you can sign with a contending team when you become older.

It never has been. It's a business first and foremost.
I'd rather Whiteside over Dwight.. any other Knick fans would prefer this?

Agreed. He doesn't appear to be an internally motivated type, which is why he was available for the Heat to claim from the bargain bin in the first place.
Without a team with a veteran presence to keep lighting a fire under him, he'll be ok but probably never be as good as he was with Miami.

I won'tbe mad if he leaves. He is 27 years old, this could be his 1 chance at a max deal. At the same time, theres many reasons i wouldnt be mad at the heat for not giving him that max deal.

I want whiteside to get his money but don't go to a team like the sixers/kings/nuggets etc just to say you got paid.
Im all for players getting their money but it should be a 50/50 split. It should be a team that offer you the max and a title contending team before the contract is up. Just my opinion.

In a perfect world, sure. But contending teams don't have infinite roster spots and most of them don't have the kind of financial flexibility (these next couple of years being the exception with all this new TV money) to throw big offers at free agents.
Teams with tons of cash to spend are the teams that typically no one wants to go to.

He's right. Loyalty is overrated. Get the money where you can.Completely agree with this. And Kobe is a bad example of 'owners being loyal to their players', since even when Kobe was an injury plagued scrub he still printed money for his org unlike any other player not named Lebron.
If Whiteside were a scrub, Pat wouldn't think twice about cutting him loose; but he needs to watch what he says. How GM's perceive you is important to your wallet.

He'd fit well with Golden State, they need a guy like him who can grab rebounds & protect the rim for them. They'd be untouchable.
Durant come to LALA Land homie.
We can sign both you and Whiteside to max deals.
Russell, Clarkson, Ingram, Durant & Whiteside.
Bench: L.Williams, Randle.

Spo, this is what you get for benching Whiteside all season and trusting Haslem more than Whiteside. A cheap franchise like Miami does not deserve Whiteside.

Yeah you will want him for the max, once you see the likes of Parsons, Beal etc getting the max this offseason.

Only way Whiteside fails will be injury.
He has great work ethic, and other failures careers would have died in Lebanon.
He worked his way to this, no way he becomes nothing.

They all say that in public. You don't go out and say 'yer well I'm staying no matter what'.
