Wow, what a time to be an NBA free agent.

Do franchises think they can print money now?

OK, these contracts are getting absurd right now.

There is no WAY the market has pushed someone like Batum to multi year over 20 mill.

good deal actually since most sf's are going get around 20mil and he was definitely the best sf on the market. Lot of teams wanted Batum so we'll see who they go for now.

And people are laughing at Griffin and Gilbert for paying too much. Love, Irving and TT all bargains by now.

Seriously. This guy should be coming off the bench on most teams and has almost no impact on a game.

You'd think teams would be more frugal in this economy. This shit is insane.

Actually probably the best signing I've seen so far. That is a discount off his full max.

Not nearly as bad as you are claiming...hell, it's not bad. It's good. Batum is awesome and is in the heart of his prime.

The ****? The guy will be making ~$30M at 32. ~$24M a year... :facepalm

I understand that he's a good two way player, but $24M a year? I still can't come to terms with the expanding cap.

:facepalm yes the 2nd best player on a 48 win team would be coming off the bench for most teams.

lol he's a below average player for his position, never been a difference maker on a team, not remotely close to all star level, making 22MM a year. Essentially a role player/rotational player clogging up your cap. it's about as shitty a signing as it gets.

it's about as shitty as Dallas signing Wes Freaking Matthews to a huge contract.

He's black. In masonanddixon's tiny mind (if he actually has one), he's automatically a scrub. He still probably believes that Dirk and Dragic are top 10 players in the league.

If you want to be taken seriously...don't say things like the above.

It's just such an ignorant opinion it isn't even worth responding to.

So if the Spurs added Batum last playoffs...they had no chance to win it all?

And your take is that they have no chance to compete if they just add Batum to it?

You said no team could win with him as the 4th best player...and I'm curious why the Spurs would go from legit contenders to not having a chance while adding a player in Batum that would be their 3rd best player.

Aldridge, Leonard, Parker, are all better, even West too, who for some reason decided to come off the bench when he would start on any other team.

Batum is a slightly better version of Danny Green.

Sure, just jack up ticket prices some more. $20 mil+ for an average player? The NBA is officially out of control.

This deal won't look great on the backend, but Batum wanted 5 years to stay in Charlotte. They at least got him to take less than his full max. I probably would have preferred to give him a 4-year full max if I were Charlotte actually.

This was big for the Hornets though. When they traded for him, I thought there was a large chance it was for a rental. Good for them to retain their most important FA>

This is exactly what I predicted was going to happen with marginally above average, but clearly not AS caliber players. Their salaries are bloating out of control and this is going to create a huge underclass where you wind up with your bench being filled entirely with players making around league or veteran's minumum, plus mid-level exception.

Batum's PER was 15.7 this past season and was 70th in estimated wins added (EWA), yet he's getting 24M a year.

This isn't the player's fault, but the bottom line is that it only takes one idiot ass GM/owner to overpay for mediocre talent and it causes an avalanche. There's going to be a huge influx of horrible contracts and a lot of stupid teams that are going to be both paying heavy luxury taxes while having shitty 1st round playoff fodder caliber lineups. Hornets = that category. Either Rich Cho is as retarded as Michael Jordan or Jordan basically breathed down his neck to force him to make a shitty signing.

Batum doesn't really move the needle at all, but with the cap at $94 million, teams like Charlotte basically have to give the money away since they have very few high cost players.

8 years in the league, hasn't made a single All-Star team...$24 million per year.

Think you can pencil us in for another lockout in the future.

Its an alright signing with the way things are going these days....

its just messed up. I heard some report the other day about 400K going towards helping at risk Toronto youth from reoffending (something like that).
--that seems kinda sad when you think about how many people that accounts for

Meanwhile that's about what Demar gets for playing basketball and being idolized.

I realize the moneys being made and the owners can afford it, but to the casual observer, it's gotta be off putting to see salaries like this.

This to me is the worst deal of all... Nicolas Batum ****ing SUCKS! He's a turnover machine, inefficient as hell, and an overall stiff. Injury prone too. He'll have weird nagging injuries all year... which thus makes him even more worthless. People thought he'd have a break-out year once he left Portland... but he is what we thought he was.... a scrub. 24 ****ing million for five years. :facepalm
