https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/748786669764026369 pretty good deal considering what other people are getting. Mitch looks better now.

Can he play defense at all?

He could have made more. 70+ million. He's a starter and Mosgov is going to on the bench second half of next season. Go Lakers!

After those 4 years, he'll probably sign a 5 year $200M contract.

Isn't Clarkson restricted? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have him back and this is good value, but we really cut into our cap space with him and Mozgov right now. We could of signed him last considering we can go over the cap for him. 27m gone, how much is left?

I think what's most telling is they must have known there was very little interest around the league for free agents to sign with them. It's the only thing I can think of. There must have been very little hope in signing any top tier free agents. I think this is a good deal for Clarkson considering the contracts given out. Still not happy with the amount of money and years Mozgov got though but they must have felt they couldn't get anyone else.

We would've been complaining if they were sitting around waiting for Durant.

People need to understand salary cap is 94 million.
Lakers got 24 million on the books next season.
Mosgov and Clarkson add like 28.5.
That's still 42 million in cap space.
2016-2017 salary cap expected to rise to 107 million.
Mosgov contract may be the new normal. Lakers still got money, chill.

Dude I understand, I follow this stuff pretty close (closer than you obviously, read 2nd paragraph for info on why). My question was why sign our restricted FA first when we could of signed him last while using the available cap on new players. This is a great deal for Clarkson considering guys like Beal and Batum getting 120m-130m, it's just strange to sign our restricted FA within the first 4 hours of free agency.
I'm happy to have him back, and you aren't right about having 42m left (doubt you even counted Ingram's contract, which is going to be higher than the usual rookie deal because of the cap raise fyi) we have more like 32m-34m left. Considering an injured scrub like Mozgov costs 16m, that doesn't leave us much to play with.
Having said all that, I'd like to reiterate again that I am very happy to have Clarkson back on what I consider to be a good value contract, especially for someone so young. I'm starting to seriously lose my belief that Mitch is the best man for the job, though.
Clarkson is bang average. Signings like this are gonna keep the Lakers in the lottery for a long time.

No, not really. I'd gladly fork over 11.7% of the cap for a player of Clarkson's caliber any day. Mozgov is a different story, this contract however is at great value.

If Lakers won 30ish games I'd get it. They won 17 tho. Players are pretty much guaranteed numbers in that kinda situation. He's not super young or anything. 24. He's an average shooter at best. Same with finishing. No vision or defense. He played alot of PG his rookie season and than SG his second season.
I would have played wait and see with Clarkson. Guess it's great value money wise so he'll always be moveable. Laker fans always include him in there core but to me he's a clear step behind Randle/Russell/Ingram going forward.

Exactly. There's 60 2-guards in the league who could at least get those numbers on last season's Lakers.

Why go over the cap with a non-contending team and worry about repeater tax?

With all the money being thrown around, this seems like a great value.
Clarkson should fire his agent if Mozgov can get offered 4 years for 64 mil and Clarkson only got 4 years for 50 mil..

He was making like 300k probably after taxes last 2 years. A second rounder who was expected to be out the league. 24 years old already. He's happy with 12 mil a year.

Great signing :applause:
I'm happy to see JC back. He's one of the hardest workers on the team and could have definitely gotten more.
A core of Russell/Ingram/Randle and JC won't do much for the next 2-3 years, but once they all develop together, I can see them being deadly.

They didn't sign Clarkson yet though. They just reached a verbal agreement. They could only sign him on July 8th. They can still sign other free agents using the available cap space and sign Clarkson last using early bird rights.

This isn't a bad deal for the Lakers at all imo. He's making the MLE the next 2 years, so it doesn't eat much into their cap space.
Also, he'll probably be their last FA signing. They still have quite a bit of space to use up, then will sign him at the end to put themselves over the cap most likely.

Am I the only Laker fan that really dislikes Clarkson? The guy doesn't even try to play defense. He seriously may be one of the worst defenders in the league. Plus he's undersized to begin with. We have no other good options on this team to move to the 2, so I understand we are stuck with him, but I'd like to see Clarkson traded for a more defensive minded SG or have the position addressed in next year's draft. This team is already too weak defensively, to ever go anywhere with Clarkson at the 2 spot.

Clarkson got underpaid. He should have got a max offer from another team, and made the Lakers match. There's no way the Lakers don't match.
