The call it the "max" for a reason.

He should just wait a year, then come to NY or LA to maximize his endorsement money. Oh wait, he will be making a basketball decision :coleman:

Conley is good and could be a superstar on another team. His stats are are low because he has to throw the ball down low to the bigs. PPl act like this is surprising when you know damn well most teams that don't have a PG would throw that type of money at him. He's far from a scrub or average.

So basically Grizzlies held onto Conley at all costs to piss of the other suitors.

way to set back your franchise for the next 5 years.

Can the Grizz just pack it in as a team? management is terrible.

Conley is a top 3 pointguard. Thats why Griz have been as successful as any other western conference team these past 5 years. They have beaten clippers multiple times, beaten the spurs, beaten portland trailblazers, beaten OKC etc etc. Conley deserves to get paid for the sh1t he has done to keep Grizzlies contenders for five damn years. He has done the same job for Grizzlies and given them as much success if not more than CP3 has done with the Clippers or Westbrook with OKC. Guy has put in work and sacrificed huge stats by running traditional plays for his two big fellers. Thats why his team loves him to and want him to get that contract. Without having to dump the ball to lane clogging bigs, Conley on any other stretch 4 team would put up numbers around the ball park of 24/5/8 no worries.

If Mike Conley didn't get injured all the time, this contract would have almost been worth it. When healthy he is one of the elite two way point guards in the league. The reason this is a dumb contract is because Mike Conley is never healthy.

Can someone explain WTF the Grizzlies are doing?

Way too much money tied into 3 injury prone slighty above average players in Parsons, Conley, Gasol.

That is under estimated in most franchises.

Ridiculous...

Even with the cap increase to 107 million in 2018 (~50% increase from 70 million), that means they're giving Conley 20mil/yr under the old salary cap. Which is fking ridiculous considering he's NEVER made and all star team and is nothing more than an average starter for his position.

The Grizzlies are just terrible at giving contracts... Remember that 80mil/5yr contract given to Rudy Gay? At least Gay was only 24 year old with sky high potential at the time.... Conley is 28 and most likely won't get any better :facepalm

I would have never guessed that Mike "14 ppg" Conley would get the largest NBA contract in history. Man, I remember when I thought Gilbert Arenas' contract was outrageous, and (in his prime) he'd had games where he looked like a superstar. I don't understand this contract at all.

You have to look at the situation the Grizzlies are in.

They have Gasol locked in long term and they have made a decision to try and win over the coming years.

Signing Conley to this contract makes perfect sense given the cap space they had and the situation the team is in.

You can't look at the money without looking at the cap situation this year and next...and looking at the specific circumstance this team is in.

So given the amount of cap space they had...and with Gasol on the books. The Conley and Parsons signing make perfect sense given the goal of the team.

In addition to the above...the Conley max shows other players around the league that they are willing to pay their own guys and take care of them. This actually matters to players/agents.

Unfortunate for the Grizz though, I doubt they're going to win anything with Lebron/Irving and Curry/Thompson still shining for the next few years. unfortunate they felt compelled to throw the largest contract ever at a player who's never pushed them over the edge or close to it. Not even an AS. Parsons isn't all that either. I like Gasol but he's 32 next January and always injured

Agreed.

It's just that rebuilding and blowing it up probably isn't a real option for them for a variety of reasons.

So it was either blow it up or max Conley. I think maxing Conley/Parsons with Gasol on the books makes way more sense than blowing it up in a vacuum...even more sense when you consider that this is Memphis.

It's the tough positions franchises are in when you don't have that true championship caliber first option.

That is a lot of money.

A ton of money on playerS with history of lingering injuries.
Parsons missed a ton of games 2 years ago.

To think Parker will never in his career make half of what Mike Conley does is just insanity. Parker is a HOF top-50 player of all time and never has and never will be a top-30 paid player in any season of his career. Most underrated and underpaid PG in the history of the game.

yes, do that.yea you're right... I forgot about Tony Parker. Parker is definitely a better PG than Conley also... My bad I should have listed him. Conley is a third tier PG at best. Career averages of 13.6 pts and 5.6 asts over 9 years. lol

Tell me how he's a top-10 point guard please? No All-Star selections, no All-NBA Team selections, oh except for 1 defensive 2nd team selection couple years ago. His stats aren't even really comparable to the players I listed. Okay you got me... He's pretty much on par as Goran Dragic... Except Dragic makes about $60 million less. Grizzlies stay losing. $150 million for an average PG?! Good grief! lol
