Hi Ish People,

Me and the missus are heading to America early next year, we arrive in LA, what are some things we can do in general anywhere? We will be travelling around the place,

So far all i have on my list is to at least go to Chicago and see the MJ statue haha

Thanks

Have a good trip my friend. Check out ChinaTown. They have some great asian food there. There's also Disney Park too if you into that.

Are you flying to various places in the US? Because Chicago is pretty far from LA. Over 3,000 kilometers

If visiting LA and going to be there for a long time. San Francisco is 6 hours away. San Diego is 2 hours away.

The three big questions are 1. what do you like to do (museums/history? outdoors? nightlife?), 2. how much time do you have, and 3. what is your budget?

The poster above is spot on about the distance from LA to Chicago. If you've never been to America, the distances between major cities can be a bit shocking. LA to Chicago is equivalent in distance to a trip from Edinburgh to Istanbul. Or, in Australian terms, it's the distance between Melbourne and Perth.

I wouldn't try to do both LA and Chicago in the same trip unless you have a significant amount of time and money. If either of those are limited, stick to California (MAYBE go to Vegas if gambling/nightlife appeal to you or to southern Utah if you want to see the natural scenery of Hollywood's "Old West") for your first trip. California has a nice mix of what the rest of the country has to offer (though you won't get much history), the weather is usually perfect, and visiting can be relatively inexpensive compared to places back east.

The US doesn't have a good rail system like Europe, so if you want to see a bunch of America all at once, you're either going to have to fly (money) or drive (time) in order to do it.

Thanks for the replies, we are there for a month, and money isn't an issue.
Anyone know what we would be looking at for fairly close seats at an NBA game?

I want to head to Chicago & Milwaukee as i have relatives there, i know it will be snowing though which can lead to all sorts of delays, but we're pretty easy going and laid back so we can make it work.

Cali sounds like it would be good to stay a week, also, completely forgot about Hollywood, definitely going to have to add that to the trip :D

Is it hard/expensive to hire a car?

Can't wait!

hit up roscoes chicken and waffles when you're in LA.

fyi, LA is HUGE. You will definitely want to rent a car to get around. hit up venice beach, try some mexican food.

you can visit sequoia national park in a day, it's 4 hours from LA and worth the visit!

You hire, I mean, rent a car at the airport. Tons of options.

A month?

Week 1 4 days LA and its environs. Definitely rent a car. The Sequoia Redwoods are amazing. Lakers. Eat Good Mexican food.

Fly to San Francisco. 3 days Eat Good Mexican food. Hit the sights, the amazing farmers market, drive the insanely crazy steep streets. Drive up to Twin peaks. Drive over to Oakland and see Steph Curry. If you're into wine, you can go up spend a day in Wine Country.

Week 2
Fly up to Portland and split a week between Portland and Seattle. Trailblazers.
If you like art, Tacoma is not far out of Seattle and they have an amazing glass museum.

Week 3/4
Fly out and go to Milwaukee and do the family stuff for 3 days, then 2 days in Chicago
Then Fly somewhere else. Chicago is a an airport hub. Lots of flights.
NYC is a two hour flight from Chicago. Spend 3-4 days.
Fly back to Chicago for 2 days

Fly back to LA for 2 days.
Fly home from LA.

If you rent a car at the airport in Portland, it's cheaper to arrange to fly out of portland again and drop the car at the same airport. If money is truly no object, you can drop the car at another airport, but there's a usually a hefty fee.

If you wanted to go crazy, you could see the Lakers, Warriors, TrailBlazers, Bucks, Bulls, Knicks and Nets.

You may want to skip NYC if the weather is bad after Chicago and Milwaukee.
