"However, the length of the jail term - at under two years in duration - means he will not actually face any prison time."
he will not actually face any prison time.
Funny how people leave out the most relevant part.

Wow.
Messi is officially a criminal.
This will knock him out of GOAT tier.

Looks like they added that part in later. I'll update the OP.

He was still given 21 month jail sentence. He doesn't have to serve it because of Spanish's first time offender and supposedly 2 years or less is considered a soft sentence so he doesn't have to serve.
The truth remains though...he was convicted and is now officially a criminal though. Sentence to 21 months to jail means he is guilty.
This will knock him out of any conversation of being GOAT. Maradona had his drug problems. Zidane had his headbutt.
What Messi did is inexcusable in a global climate where getting rich and evading taxes are severely frowned upon.

Pretty standard. High profile and protected. I've known guys who've done hard time for tax related crimes.

He's done in the eyes of the public.
Watch him lose his endorsement because of this and the national team fiasco doesn't help either.

He choked and missed his penalty.
He cried like a baby after the game but thar was not a big deal till he said he is retired from international play.

So, when are people gonna suggest incredibly harsh penalties for tax evasion like they did on drugs?

It would be crazy is a legend like Messi went to prison in his prime. Can't think of another example except maybe Ali.

damn... four more months and messi would have gone down in flames.
instead, i expect that this will all blow over. he'll be able to say that he was out of the loop and won't have to suffer any real penalty. perception is reality, and people just won't care too much about all this.
remember when other famous people got in trouble with the IRS? lauryn hill, willie nelson, pete rose, wesley snipes...?
blip on the radar.

He should be in prison. At least have him serve half of the sentence. What kind of crap is that. Give a guy a sentence but he doesn't have to serve.
If they make him go to prison or jail then this will set a good example to others to not cheat the system.
Panama Papers are going to infuriate a lot of people.

The worst part is, they aren't even paying back the entire amount they stole. :oldlol:
