View Full Version : For those who have been to NYC or LA, which city lived up to the hype?

I wonder for people who have visited both feel about it. I visited LA a long time ago and I was too young.

I've met people who love NYC and LA the same amount but I've also met people who heavily favor one over another.

The most easygoing people I knew in college were all from SoCal. They knew how to have fun too.

From the looks of it NY doesn't look too fun, the people are mean and the weather can suck.

Cali in general has more laid back people, nice weather & beaches.

the weather can suck.

Best times to visit NYC are spring or fall.

I've lived in both for at least three years...Los Angeles has no jobs for anyone younger than 40, NYC is too miserable a place to live in long term.

Australia is the only bastion of civility left on Earth.

The biggest knock on LA (which I agree with) is that everything is too spread apart.

LA doesn't have a centralized hub like NYC or Toronto.

At the same time it depends on what one wants to do.

Depends they are two different types of city. Los Angeles has more of a laid back culture due to the better weather, area is more spread out and less congested (compared to NYC traffic is still a nightmare in LA) and you have to drive everywhere. More of a beach culture near the coast and downtown LA is developing but isn't what you think of a world class city. Personally I love the areas near the beach but they are expensive AF.

NYC is much more centralized city where you can get to one part to another using public transportation.

In terms of people I don't think there is much of a difference. New Yorkers are known to be aggressive but I think LA are just as aggressive but in a passive-aggressive manner since you don't have to interact with the mass since you are spending the majority of your time traveling in the car while New Yorkers are more straight to the point but helpful. You have millionaires to bums riding the subway in NYC so you generally have to find a way to get along.

I've only spent a short amount of time in LA, and wasn't really that into it. However, I'm not a beach guy as it is. I wasn't fond of San Diego either, which I spent more time in, but if you're into that laid back beach vibe, San Diego does it better than LA IMO anyway. I would probably prefer LA to San Diego had I spent more time there because there does seem to be more of a city vibe. And my favorite city I visited in California was San Francisco.

I grew up in, and am still in, what they call the greater NY area. The Southwest part of Connecticut isn't at all what you think of when you think of New York City, but it's only a 60 - 90 minute train ride to the heart of downtown Manhattan. So it's somewhere I've been probably a thousand times. I've also taken many people there for the first time, and there seems to be a couple of responses. One is the awe of it's size and density. I've often been unimpressed by other major cities I've visited, at least physically, because there really isn't anything quite like midtown Manhattan in terms of size and people. There are pockets of cities like that, but not to that degree. However after that there often is a bit of a sense of disappointment, because it's so big, and not really built as a tourist destination. Time Square looks crazy at night. But unless you want to buy crap, or eat overpriced crap, there's not much to do. I personally love the Broadway scene, but many people don't. It's not until you have the chance for NY to soak in, that it becomes really impressive. There are world class restaurants everywhere, you need to find them though. There are great bars, but you have they're not name brand clubs like you might find in Vegas or LA. You need to be willing and able to explore to fully appreciate NY, and that takes some time getting adjusted in a lot of cases. Or you need a good guide.

That isn't always the case though. Every year at the Big East we see people from wherever the Big East has spread out through, and they're having the best goddamned time imaginable. New food every night. Seeing shows. Just walking and admiring the buildings.

When you grow up in tiny towns like I did, they are absolutely incredible experiences and the type of places that people where I'm from seldom go to, so I feel fortunate to have experienced the vastness of each of these cities a handful of times.

I spent a week in NYC and had a blast.

I've also spent a week in LA...it's okay I guess

As far as a tourist type vacation goes, I'd definitely say NYC>>>

Neither they both suck
This.

LA traffic is just :facepalm

I also have a problem with cities whose downtown areas are basically shanty towns for the homeless, particularly at night. LA downtown at night is pretty grim; I would've thought any self-respecting city/community would try to do something about such mass homelessness, especially with Beverley Hills, and all the preachy celebs who live there and never do a thing for the people around them, right nearby. Hollywood is also a borderline slum.

Major differences between the two are the people.

New Yorkers aren't mean. They're real. Straight up. If they don't like your ass then you'll probably know about it. I made friends easily out there. I just vibed with east coasters more frequently.

Californians while laid back in nature can be passive aggressive, flighty and flakey. They're not "mean" because they're too busy passively avoiding any and all disagreements and confrontations. But they'll sure tell everyone else they don't like you.

This of course is my own experiences.

NY Taxi rides are like amusement park rides comparable to LA's Six Flags, only with more cursing.

Born in Strasbourg, grew up in London (mostly), spent a few years living in NYC as a wee kid in the early 90s (left before Giuliani--my english mother was horrified at the violence of the place then, but I can't say I remember much).

London is slowly but surely becoming an artificial shithole though, so I can't talk; bunch of money-men desperate to build monstrous skyscrapers all over the centre of the city; tis like they want to make such a grand old city into a shitty version of Shanghai or something.

I agree with this to an extent. Cali ppl tend to change their opinions about ppl more easily though. I've seen people grow onto people they initially didn't like but a lot of NY ppl I grew up with, if they don't like you at first, it's near impossible to change their mind.

Haha old NYC and old LA back in the 70s-90s were crazy.

Really dangerous/ghetto in certain parts back then in both cities.
