Well, this makes more sense but it's not as simple as it seems. Taking on Durant meant gutting their all time great team. They lost all the key players from the 2015 playoffs.

There's lots of things a team can say they "need" in order to win a title, when a team is as close to winning a title as the Warriors were this last season.

They needed some rim protection and more size. They needed Curry to not play poorly. They needed Thompson to play better. They needed Barnes not to go ice cold in the last 3 games.

It sounds like it was a good selling point to Durant, who seems rather sensitive and emo.
