View Full Version : Players shouldn't be able to accept lesser contract

For example, Wade was officially offered $50 Million by the Nuggets. There should be a clause in the NBA rulebook preventing him to accept $47 Million offered by the Bulls. This maintains market parity and prevent stars to just 'take a paycut' to 'help their team' BS.

It's not to say that Wade HAS to accept the $50 Million from the Nuggets though. He just cannot accept any team offering less than that.

Hmm. Sounds like auction-style free agency with owners having all the power. What about guys who are almost ready to retire, but wanna stick around one more year for a ring? (Can David West sign with the Warriors for 2m or would he have to play for the 76ers for 3m?)

Every team in the NBA would vote against that rule and have you escorted out of the CBA negotiations for mentioning it.

The idea is fun. Like in, it's so wrong it's almost entertaining to think about all the horrible implications it would have.

Get rid of max contracts too.

The Sixers could offer Lebron 75 mio and according to the rules he has to accept that offer.

Shit would be funny as hell :lol

Yep sorta auction style it preserves market parity.

In that example, he can't sign with the Warriors unless they offer him at least $3m but he don't have to accept 76ers offer too.

The players would have no choice. That's crazy.

What is not crazy is getting rid of the max contract limit. Allow teams to offer whatever they want. The players can then choose between chasing a ring or money.

How about all players drafted by their original team are always restricted free agents. Original team must tact on an extra 10-15% to match another team's offer.

The owners want the cap on max salaries so that they can protect themselves from themselves. Imagine the money they would give out without the cap. Conley just got $30 million per year. Without the cap he might get 40-50 million offers.

Also if you eliminate a cap on max salaries, then Bird Rights are eliminated and teams will lose the mechanism that allows them to better keep the players that they want to keep.
