I think I'd go:

1-Jordan
2-Kareem
3-Lebron
4-Russell/Wilt
5-Wilt/Russell
6-Magic
7-Duncan
8-Bird
9-Shaq /Hakeem
10-Hakeem /Shaq

I have no problem with Duncan being top 5.
I also think that Lebron is almost definitely doing to end up 2nd at worst when he's done.
Shaq is also only as low as he is due to relatively poor longevity (extended dominance)

1. Michael Jordan
2. Kareem
3. Bill Russell

He's not offensively proficient at any stretch of ATG standards, but his leadership intangibles on a record-participated amount of championship teams goes a long way for me; moreover, if the Finals MVP was inaugurated before his team, it's safe to conjecture that he'd have collected the most of his eponymous trophy.

4. Wilt Chamberlain

I don't care what era he played in; each era has its own pros and cons as they cross-relate to others, and thus I'm crediting them for what they managed to accomplish in their own era. Just as you can discredit past ATGs for playing in a more primitive, less athletically competitive era, I could do the same and argue that modern players—if properly transposed to past eras—would languish back then since they wouldn't have the past players to learn from growing up that they do now.

The whole era argument is notional, but what they did accomplish in that era is substantive; in that regard, Wilt was one of the most dominant outside of his NBA Finals miscues.

5. LeBron James

Another great, legacy-enhancing year for him, and I can see him peaking out at number two with due course. He just needs to prove more longevity, which only the future—not the present speculators—can definitively determine it, and I'm not going to jump the gun based on what I rationally predict; however, he's already cemented his impeccable legacy with his championship-leadership in Cleveland, and anything he accomplishes from this point onwards just adds bonus points.

6. Magic Johnson

Still one of the best team-leaders of all time, IMO, and he'd have the case for the most impactful player of all time if it wasn't for his defensive deficiencies. Considering that his team was already in championship-contention form at the juncture of his retirmenent and didn't show any major steps on the downslope the prior season, one can only ruminate how he would have enhanced his legacy had he played for 3-4 more solid years.

7. Tim Duncan

8. Larry Bird

9. Shaq

On par with Jordan as the most dominant NBA Finals-performer of all time while he was a Laker, he would have seriously rivaled Jordan's case as the GOAT with a more longevous prime.

Sadly, however, longevity is the one glaring hole in his legacy, as he needed 2-3 more prime-level years—which he was capable of, but he had a sluggish work ethic later on compared to other ATGs—to really vault himself as a top-5 ATG at least.

10. Hakeem

Now that they're teammates it will be tough for both of them to pass Kobe. One or both of them will have a reduced role and only one of them can win FMVP. To pass Kobe would probably take a minimum of 3 rings and 2 FMVP's. That means the Warriors would have to win at least 4 championships. Possible sure, but a tall order nevertheless.

Fair enough but don't you think this doable? Is it really a tall order for possibly the most supertar-laden group in nba history (all 28 of younger) to win atleast 4 and possibly up to 6 championships?

If they do, they're splitting the fmvps. Curry would have 3 and Durant 3 along with their regular season mvps and more impressive career numbers and efficiency stats.

nope.. FMVP is a media award voted on by journalists ...

All that matters is Impact + Winning.

Even if you shave off Kobe's only non-superstar ring, he's still 4/6 .. placing him somwhere in the middle tier. LeBron is still slightly behind Larry Bird.. who accomplished 3 superstar rings in only 5 attempts, whilst LBJ needed 7 attempts and a whole lot of luck / interference. If he gets another superstar ring, however, my hand will be forced .. and I will have to place him above Larry Legend.

edit: you also messed your own list up there.. how can bron be 3/3 when he gave up a FMVP a piece to kawhi and iggy? he even gave one up to tony parker lol .. if you have an argument.. please, at least make it accurate.

My top 10 changes a bit every now and then:

1-Michael Jordan
2-Kareem Abdul Jabbar
3-Bill Russell
4-Lebron James
5-Kobe Bryant
6-Magic Johnson
7-Tim Duncan
8-Shaquille O'neal
9-Larry Bird
10-Wilt Chamberlain

Kobe is the best I've ever seen from an individual skills perspective, but I gotta give Lebron his due. Historically, Lebron is such a well-rounded player, and while not necessarily a better player than some of the others (for me at least), he has a more accomplished individual career than everyone else except the top three. I can't put Kobe over Lebron ever again, and remain intellectually honest, after Lebron defeated the team with the best record in history. No way. That's something that might not ever be replicated other than Lebron again next year, and even ardent Kobe fanatics would start to understand why many critics are starting to give the Jordan vs. Lebron debate a harder look.

Let's appreciate great basketball guys! Lebron or Kobe, they're both awesome in their own way, man!.

Goddamn why do LeBron Stans hate Kobe so much and why do Kobe stans hate Bron so much :biggums:
Kobe fans have always hated LeBron, or anyone who threatened their "Godbe". But especially LeBron, because Kobe was supposed to be "the next MJ" and then LeBron came along. And when he was as good as advertised they got butthurt. They've always hated him. Thus, LeBron fans have a lot of animosity towards Kobe because his idiot stans have been calling LeBron a scrub for a decade.

Based on strictly accolades:

1. Bill Russell (11 rings, 5 mvps, up to arguably ~10 hypothetical fmvps & ~10 dpoys if those accolades existed, he would have got them because he was the best player in his team in most of those Finals and the best defensive player in the NBA in most of his seasons)

*HENCE, HUGE GAP*

2. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
3. Michael Jordan

*small gap*

4. Magic Johnson
5. Lebron James
6. Tim Duncan
7. Larry Bird
8. Shaquille O'Neal
9. Kobe Bryant
10. Wilt Chamberlain

Its still kindof subjective at least the further down the list you go, example i see no problem with having Bird over Duncan or Shaq over Bird or Duncan over Lebron here because there is no big gaps between the 1 guy above/beneath.... what do you value the most? rings? mvps? fmvps? all in a total?

Based on strictly overall talent/basketball ability:

Horribly subjective, but for the simplicity lets say the myths, stories, legends & numbers dont lie.... and if you have seen them all play, then eyes dont lie either...

1-2. Oscar Robertson
1-2. Wilt Chamberlain
2-3. Michael Jordan
4-6. Lebron James
4-6. Shaquille O'Neal
6-8. Hakeem Olajuwon
6-8. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
6-8. David Robinson (YES, he was that ***ing good, on both ends, ive seen him carefully the entire 90s, very underrated, dont ever let anybody trick you into believing his talent never at least hovered this level)
8-9. Larry Bird
8-9. Magic Johnson
8-9. Elgin Baylor
9-11. Jerry West
9-11. Julius Erving
9-11. Kobe Bryant
9-11. Charles Barkley
9-11. Kevin Garnett
9-11. Tim Duncan
11-15. Moses Malone
11-15. Karl Malone
11-15. Dwyane Wade
11-15. Kevin Durant
etc.

No, i didnt forget Bill Russell, dont want to offend the old timers here...

Combination of the two above - CONCLUSION:

1. Michael Jordan
2. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
3. Wilt Chamberlain
4. Magic Johnson
5. LeBron James
6. Larry Bird
7. Shaquille O'Neal
8. Tim Duncan
9. Kobe Bryant
10. Bill Russell

I find Bill Russell & Wilt Chamberlain extremly tough to rank, they are top 10, but in what order/number i will be unsure of forever, changes everyday, be-all end-all i would probably rank Wilt ahead of Russell tho (sorry, while one had the most accolades the other had the most talent ever, i chose the latter, so did the voters in the 60s who despite seeing Russell winning every year voted Wilt over him on the 1st all-nba teams)... never seen a full game with them, its not avaliable (not in their prime) so my basketball judgement on them is not rich enough to compare them with the rest of the names mentioned here who i have seen more than enough of in their primes (excluding Elgin Baylor & Oscar Robertson aswell)...

Its tough or more like impossible to rank players in order anyways, there is no criteria all of us can agree with, there is a reason no such thing officially exists... we can all agree on who the 10 best players ever are, no problem... but how & where to rank them specifically in digits? NO... not even Jordan is safe... Its all personal lists based on knowledge/observation/study of all the players with perhaps a hint of prejudice or all prejudice or no prejudice, the one with no prejudice will do best but still.... oh well, i tried, dont throw the big bottles...

people should just not even vote Wilt and Russell into this kind of shit, noones watched them, and the stats/box scores just infer that it was a completely different game back then.

1a. Kareem
1b. LeBron
1c. Jordan

4. Shaq
5. Larry Bird
6. Dirk Nowitzki
7. Hakeem Olajuwon
8. David Robinson
9. Kevin Durant
10. Magic Johnson

Current players with potential to join list: Steph Curry, Chris Paul(unlikely but it's there)

Amazing.

Kobe has no case over Lebron after these past Finals. None, that argument is over.

Kobe has no argument near the top 10 period. The rest of those players are on a different tier than him.

take a deep breath.

shaq would have been a charles barkley without kobe. he just didn't have the drive that kobe had to be the best, even tho he's cocky af.

both magic and shaq claim kobe to be the better player. kobe is slightly ahead of both of them. and keep in mind, the difference between a spot is so marginal. to even make the top ten you have to be a transcendental talent, which all of these guys are.

it doesn't get closer than kobe and duncan in terms of ranking. if i was a spurs fan, i would put duncan at the #5 spot and kobe at #6. i'll admit there's a slight bias on my part when it comes to ranking the #5 and #6 spot.

2000-04: Shaq (/03 Duncan)
2005: Duncan
2006: Kobe
2007: Kobe/Duncan
2008: Kobe
2009+: Lebron

Shaq was the best player for half the decade, the Kobe and Duncan interchanging the rest until Lebron took over.

Shaq/Duncan/Lebron are 5-7 and Kobe is 8-10. Just stop.
