Bear in mind that players in general are playing longer now. KG has like 21 years, Kobe 20, Duncan 19, Dirk/Pierce/Vince 18, etc. Pretty much the last 20 years has seen a number of players pushing beyond the age and number of seasons expected from past players, due to modern medicine and training.


If Bird was coming along nowadays he likely would have played longer, bearing in mind that back injuries can be crippling and alter a player's abilities differently from other injuries. Let's also not forget that Bird came into the league at 23/24. We know why Magic's career was cut short, though it should be noted that he came back much heavier 5 years later and was still a very good player. Magic had a number of good seasons left had he not retired. In 91 he was runner-up MVP and led the Lakers to the finals. He wasn't peak Magic but still obviously a top 5 talent when he left.

The use of the words "put to shame" is ridiculous. Both Bird and Magic had great careers. All 4 guys are hall of fame, same team, all time greats. And all 4 played a different position and exhibited different skill sets. But if you are going to make such a statement, let me ask you this- which 2 would you rather have on your team? In my opinion, I'd take Bird-Magic because both Bird and Magic had greater versatility and all around skill sets than Duncan-Kobe. And Bird - Magic have a greater ability to make their teammates better and blend their skills to what may be needed on any given night to win the game.

Every year Magic was healthy and played - a good ten years, and every healthy year Bird played, you thought they could win it all. With other great teams and all. I thought SA would win in years other teams sucked. Shaq and Kobe for about 5 years, maybe about 8 in total for Kobe. 8 or 9 for Duncan and he could never get that back to back. So longevity doesn't improve stock to me, unless its Kareem where he either was the contender or the best player in the game for like 19 years.
