View Full Version : So Steph Charges $2000 To Attend His Camp?
http://theshaderoom.com/steph-curry-called-out-by-michael-bennet-for-high-camp-prices/
I apologize if this has already been posted...I'm not gonna just judge him, if he didn't charge anything then probably way too many kids would show up, but $2000? And you have to fly to Hawaii so you have to be able to afford that also.
Now, we didn't have much money growing up and even if my mom and grandmother had $2000, there's no way they'd spend it on me to go to a basketball camp.
Apparently he's referring the kids who cant afford it, to his brother's camp.
Thoughts?

Wouldnt worry bout it.
These kids' future agents will make sure it gets paid for through AAU coaches/caretakers.
Even the broke kids will be able to attend.
IF theyve shown enough potential :crazysam:

It's just capitalizing. Almost everyone in this country does it. Why should Curry be singled out? Almost every player in the NBA is wearing a sneaker that poor people shouldn't spend their money on and I don't even want too get into sweat shop child labor.
He probably has a number of charity initiatives if you're worried about him being a nice guy.

Steph makes tens of millions a year, $2,000 is nothing for him. He's charging not for himself but to cover the cost of the camp itself. Not much to ask for.

I'm not judging him but for 2Gs per head to be needed just to cover costs he would have to be holding camp in the Taj Mahal. The man is making money.

I don't have a problem with it, personally. You're an NBA player, your camp is naturally probably going to be more expensive than your local high school basketball teachers.
I just find it hilarious how he released that statement referring people that can't afford it to his brother's camp. If you really cared that much about getting kids with a lower income to a top tier basketball camp, then you would lower your damn prices yourself. Not refer others to a lower tier camp to save your ass from any media backlash you're going to get, whether warranted or not.

If he is realistic he knows that he's not going to be a better shooting coach than some HS basketball coach that played college ball for a good program. Steph Curry can't just make a guy Steph Curry. If coaching worked that way we would never see a guy shoot like Rondo or Rubio in the NBA. In reality Curry will show his campers his pregame dribble and shooting routines and then leave them in the hands of his counselors for most of their training, maybe he wanders around the facility saying "hi," taking pictures, a few kids will get to play one-on-one to 7 or play him in h-o-r-s-e. That camp won't produce 30 (or whatever) Steph Curries, it might put a few kids out that eventually are good enough for a scholarship but if they can afford to go there then they probably don't need that scholarship. This is Steph Curry making money, it has nothing to do with making great basketball players.
And is that a bad thing? Would it be so much more noble of Curry opened up a camp in some poor inner city area trying to make future NBA stars? Very few kids make it that far, it's not a realistic dream, and whatever is required for some kid to make the NBA isn't going to be put in them by a week of being within a hundred feet of Curry for a few hours a day.
Why not refer them to his brother? His brother can make a little money, too.

I'd have a lot more respect for him if he referred people to his brother BEFORE any media controversy. Makes it look like he's using his brother to save his image, rather than using his platform to help his brother's image.

I just don't feel the need to judge him for this. If a gallon of milk costs you $3 at Star Market and $4 at Whole Foods do we see people fussing at Whole Foods or do people just buy their milk wherever they buy their milk and not bother talking about it? I don't know the full story but I'd bet that he mentioned his brother's camp because he was getting criticized. Which is just human nature. This is a capitalist society and he's not hurting anyone by having an expensive camp. I don't feel like he should be taken to task for this, not when similar things are being done by lots of people everywhere.

The only reason for the insurance to be higher on his camp than any other camp would be because it's more expensive than a normal camp. Which wouldn't surprise me, insurance companies are some of the biggest money-grabbers out there.

And I bet Curry doesn't organize or set the price for his camp.
It's like those people who were bitching about the price of Kevin Durant's shoes. Nike pays him like $300 million in endorsement money... anyone who thinks Durant gets to set the price of his shoe is retarded.

The only reason you pay $2000 for your kid to go to Steph Curry's basketball camp is so he can be scouted by High School's, College's, AAU teams, and Agents.
