Hotter in Northern Alaska than NYC or LA. Temp 30 degrees above normal.

Heat records have been shattered this week in Alaska, typically the USA's coldest state.

Deadhorse, located near the coast of the Arctic Ocean, skyrocketed to a record 85 degrees Wednesday, (http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2016/07/14/alaska-heat-records/87086826/)the warmest temperature ever recorded in that area, the National Weather Service said.

It was also the state's highest temperature ever measured within 50 miles of the Arctic, climatologist Brian Brettschneider, who lives in Alaska, said.

The average high temperature this time of year in Deadhorse is 57 degrees, Weather Underground reports.

Brettschneider also said the heat index at Tanana, Alaska, on Wednesday was 85 degrees. It was 88 degrees in Fairbanks on Wednesday, hotter than New York City's 85 degrees.

Damn. The Arctic has lost an area of ice bigger than the size of Colorado in just the last two days.

i had no idea places in alaska even got to 57 degrees during summer, nevermind this new surge. :S

IIRC it's getting harder to run the famous iditarod race because of less and less snow on the ground.

Idiots like Trump who don't believe in climate change/global warming will just ignore it.. When winter comes, they go "ooooooooooh we got snow. Now what science?" When they see temperature this high in the arctics, we will never hear a pip from them

Morons.

North America used to be one gigantic Glacier until the Ice Age was ended by cavemen who drove too many suvs and didn't utilize solar and wind energy

unfortunately humans, just like pretty much all life on earth, are heavily programmed to think locally, and even anti-globally.

you'd think that high intelligence, science and civilisation would make more of a difference, but no. basically we're too damn successful for our own good, and i think that happened even before the age of agriculture and early civilisation.

we're pretty much just watching the final act play out at this point...

So lets think globally.

Do you think it's a good or bad idea to help industrialize third world nations and continue to increase the global human population from 7 billion to 9 billion to 11 billion...

Yes or no?

"But bbbbbbbbbut it's the Republicans who wont drive hybrids thats making the global warmings happen!!"

@akrozzletozzle,
sadly i don't think it makes much difference what we do at this point. might as well just try to enjoy the shit show.

but NO... clearly the increase in population and industry is not helping sustain our race. egalitarianism, sharing and concern for other peoples has backfired so to speak. at the same time, we basically take advantage of other peoplse and resources across the globe to maintain our standard of living, so...
