just watched the first episode.. good shit

anyone watching this?

Naz is a straight-laced Paskistani-American student who is off to a must-attend party on a Friday night. His only available transportation being his father's taxi cab, Naz sets off into Manhattan. But his party-going plans are quickly forgotten when a mysterious young woman jumps aboard in need of a ride. Charmed by her intense intrigue and good looks, Naz gets swept up by her pressures. After a mind-altering night of drugs and passion, the woman is dead, and Naz finds himself in the cross hairs of a gruesome murder investigation, panicked and shaken, but possibly with a trace of doubt as to his own innocence.

Just watched the 1st episode, a very tense episode. I put my phone away, couldn't bother being distracted. Are we supposed to root for him or be like Bodie and assume he's guilty? I guess I'll form my own conclusions.

It had to have been the guy walking with drug dealer otherwise why would the dealer lie about being alone?

It could have been. I honestly thought he left the guy out because he doesn't wanna attract attention to him. Why get his friend/ acquaintance questioned if he doesn't have to be? If the guy with him did it, I doubt Bodie knew anything about it.

I really like it so far. Feels like a travelogue through the American justice system. I was under the impression it was based on a true story, one which I know nothing about however. That said, I don't think we're supposed to wonder if he's guilty. I think it's intended to be clear that he is not guilty. I think it's the guy who was staring them down at the gas station who had been following her. If nothing else, this is an intriguing way to tell the story.

The Turturro character was apparently supposed to be played by James Gandolfini before he died. I just can't envision him in that role for the life of me though.

Because you don't talk to cops. Tell the cop you were with a homie and now the homie gotta talk to the cops. Dude f'ed up. Was thinking he was just going to shoot the shit and get some details from the detective, now he gets he ass hauled in.

Well thats how I took it.

I think I know who it was but it is based on absolutely zero evidence. "The limo driver that grabbed the cigarette the girl threw out"

The show must take another turn after these two episodes cause Naz is gone for the rest of the season.

I look at this way. If someone else did kill her, then there was no sign of a break-in. So this leads me to believe that it was her step dad that killed her. He was acting very sketchy at the morgue.

.
wut? no he is not

so far we have:

1. her stepfather
2. black dude in the street (not the one they took in the police station)
3. the other black dude at the gas station
4. Naz

I watch every Sunday. I really liked this past weekend's, and I'm a little surprised because I read a few episode reviews and everyone felt like it was still too slow and too much set up. I found Nas' transformation to sort of be the pay off for what we've gotten so far. I was pretty surprised by it. I'm not entirely sure why.

I didn't think this was a remake of something, I thought it was based on a true story, but that doesn't seem possible now that I'm watching it, it feels too recent to have been based on something true, only mildly dated by a few years, but I could be wrong.

I cannot imagine Gandolfini in the Turturro role. I'm sure he could've done it, but there's just no way it would've felt quite the same.

It's 3 more episodes. 8 episodes on the whole season so I'm sure we will find out something big in the next episode.

I was OK with them making Nasir into a badass. I don't think it was to make us think he has a dark side to him and that it could have been him that killed her, but more of something along the lines of how someone who very well might be innocent getting dragged into the darkness of prison life and change for the worse.

It has consistently gotten better. Less real, but more dramatically interesting. I don't think they're trying to convince us Nas did it, so much as trying to show what a past can look like when viewed through a trial like this.

I enjoy the sort or investigation that's going on with the lawyers and the other suspects, the step father, the limo driver, Duane Reed. But it is extremely unreal in comparison to the grittiness and reality the show seemed to be going for early on. I have no idea where that kiss came from the other night. But I've let go of believability and am just running with what's a really interesting story at this point. It did start slow, but it's built well, and it's only eight episodes.

This could work as a recurring series, like True Detective, where every season takes on a new case with new lawyers. But I don't think there's any intention of that.

It's interesting and terrifying to see the kid turning into a crack-smoking criminal. Regardless of whether he's acquitted, he's gonna be ****ed up.

turturro killed that closing statement. got damn, give him an emmy consideration. def a tension filled episode after the prosecution flat out buried nas. the moment she forced his hand and got him to say 'i don't know'...wasn't sure if they would recover from that.

v. good season, thought after the first 3-4 episodes, it would be more of a social commentary before it sort of dove into some prison cliches. that said, it is rikers island so i can forgive that somewhat. also, do they not drug test in during trials or is it too expensive? now nas is a full blown drug addict. the chandra/nas thing was a bit....far fetched. i don't see any lawyer in a high profile case doing that, young or not.

also, how was the lack of blood on his clothing never brought up? if you stab somebody that many times, your clothes are going to have all kinds of blood spatter on it. being nitpicky now but how that wasn't mentioned once sort of bothers me. like i said, v. good show that could have been slightly better with some tweaks. the acting was pretty top notch

Two hours listed time, and closer to an hour forty when it finished, seemed too long, even for a finale, but when it was done I felt like they cut it together to work. Still probably could've used two full episodes. But that would've probably meant more closure on the real killer. Which by the way, the fact that there was access to those extra cameras, and they didn't actually look at them, seems super neglectful. Even by the defending lawyers.

Nas was great. Turturro was great. Nas' mother turned in a subtle, but super performance. Detective Box I felt like was extremely well put together. I missed a closure scene with Omar. The run through other possible suspects was really well done, especially considering none of them actually did it. It was a nice way to explore reasonable doubt. I did feel like they sort of sold out Chandra's character. The kiss was bad enough. Her regret over it, almost instantly after seeing the camera, makes it extra odd for her to then smuggle in narcotics for him. And by chance I guess the cameras were off for that? Her storming out of the courtroom at the close of the case was a little short of an ending. I could've used more closure on her. She'd been through quite a bit on her own as well.

I wonder if these was forcibly reassembled as a two hour finale post production, in order to hit HBO's weird edict that they won't show their Sunday night premium stuff on long weekends, seeing as this coming Sunday is a long weekend. Because it feels like this would've played better had it been re-edited and presented in two pieces.

ya, the CCTV was another issue, but we are talking about a show where a somewhat fly by night lawyer is spying on a suspect and slamming him into a wall :oldlol:

i get stone was threatened first and physically at that, but i mean...again, i don't see a lawyer behaving this way all the time.

i'd give it an 8.5/10. it's entertaining and worth a watch. highly recommended but it didn't have the same impact to me as the first season of true detective...or hell, the wire, even though it started off a bit bumpy, it always felt like something big was going down.

about to finish up the second half of the first season of mr robot. then gonna start stranger things. should i be excited?

SPOILER ALERT

Great show, but the thing that really doesn't make sense to me is assuming the financial adviser was the killer, why would he point Stone in the direction of the stepdad in the first place? Why create more doubt around the murder leading to more investigation that could point to him, when everyone seems pretty convinced it was Naz? More importantly, if the stepdad was accused as a result of the financial advisers information and he knew about their relationship, he could easily just reveal their relationship and shine a light on him as a suspect.

Yeah, generally speaking, I really wonder just how much investigating a defense attorney does of a case. Especially while it's actively on trial. I know they have to compress some of this information for narrative purposes, but I don't recall any cases being made by lawyers while they were trying cases. And it would seem to me that would be information gathered by a professional Private Investigator, paid for by the attorney's office, and is part of why PI's have to be licensed. I can't imagine how much of what they gathered would even be permissible in court.

You've got some good TV in front of you there.

These are both good questions. Hiding a big secret like this for this long in a narrative is bound to cause some questionable motives looing backward at behavior. I know there were some similar questions during True Detective season one, but I don't remember what they were at the moment.
