His interview with Michael Wilbon prior to his HOF induction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb6VWg39NpQ

Around the 8:30 mark MJ is asked if he's the greatest ever. He said he cringes when he hears that about himself because he never played against greats that came before him and then he names Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West as examples and said that calling him GOAT disrespects them. His fans should realize that it's impossible to definitively compare between eras. It's a fun discussion but there is no right or wrong answer.

By the way listen to the whole thing including Part 2. It's pretty fascinating.

Being tabbed the greatest comes with a hell of a lot of baggage.

Even the biggest alpha you've even met would shy away from that. Let alone the biggest you've ever seen on your television.

Ali is the actual GOAT athlete for that reason.

And since #1 options control the scoring and flow more than anyone else, MJ"s scoring and efficiency advantage is more important than Lebron's replaceable defensive rebounds against small ball lineups, or 1 assist edge achieved via Westbrook-like time (http://stats.nba.com/tracking/#!/player/possessions/?Season=2015-16&SeasonType=Playoffs&sort=TIME_OF_POSS&dir=1&PORound=4) of possession.

Jordan also faced greater defensive attention, since he scored 15 ppg more than his 2nd option, compared to 1 ppg for Lebron - but despite the greater defensive attention, MJ made all the game winning plays for Pippen, whereas Kyrie made several for Lebron.
