View Full Version : Why did Kobe fail to win a playoff series without Shaq before Pau showed up?

I only ask because for a Top 12 player I find this very underwhelming, even tho I am a big (thick) fan of his.

It's not really the same as Pau failing in the playoffs, because nobody has Pau ranked even in the top 25. So nobody would expect Pau to be winning playoff series without HOFers around him.

But I mean in that same conference, guys like Paul, Melo, Nash all won playoff series without any HOFers on their teams.

Why come didn't Kobe never do that?

Thanks in advance for your insights guys and here's to a great discussion

He did what he could with a weak supporting cast.

West was stacked, every playoff team was well over the .500 mark, meanwhile the East at the time was still being played at a house league level.

The main reason was because there wasn't enough time. Pau came in the third season of Kobe being the man, leading to his team to the best record in the west before pau even got there . He got beat by the suns and caught them twice in a row. That team was no joke.

Lol. Shaq w/o Kobe= 1 ring.

Pau w/o Kobe= 0 rings.

Ariza/bynum/Odom w/o Kobe= 0 rings

Ray w/o Bron= 1 ring

Wade w/o= 1 ring

Basically a trend. The "most dominant player ever" had the most successful only when paired with Kobe Bryant.

Ray Allen, one of the greatest shooters ever, found success before Bron.

Wade, the 3rd/4th best SG ever found success long before Bron.

Interesting, One more question

Did Kobe start his first two seasons?

Nope. He wasn't good enough. He was a bench player/scrub.

Even after that, as a starter in 1999 he had 3 airballs in game winning attempts against Utah as the Lakers got spanked.
The following year, he shot 36%fg from the field in the finals vs Indiana including a horrific 4-20 shooting game for 8 points.
Kobe during his first 4 years wasn't even worth discussing.

Lethick in his 4th year lead d-leaguers to the finals almost single handedly :lebronamazed:

It could also be he spent the majority of his prime, including his peak seasons, when he was teammates with Kobe

And the Ray Allen example is stupid considering he won his title as 3rd option

Or the fact that Shaq did have deep playoff success prior to being paired with Kobe and afterwards also

Replacing a sub-47% scorer and a 40%finals scorer with another 2 guard?

They wouldn't 3 peat. They'd win 4-5.

Rofl! Guaranteed that you wouldn't view those years as his prime if he only got 1 ring there.

Are you seriously disputing '97-'04 wasn't part of Shaq's prime, and that he didn't peak during the 3peat?

Kobe played with a dog shit supporting cast, and is partly to blame for that by running Shaq outta town, but there's simply no denying he quit in Game 7 versus Phoenix. Watching his 'decoy' explanation on Inside the NBA was absolutely hilarious. Charles and Ernie knew he couldn't sell it. :oldlol:

LA should have wrapped that series up in Game 6...and were literally one rebound away from doing so.

they got ray allen'ed by tim thomas.. Kobe hit the go ahead shots.. dropped 50, pretty much poured his guts out in that game 6 to try and close, but after a shot like that all momentum is pretty much crushed.. and we saw the same outcome in both series.
