I've done LSD many times. Never in my life has it been close to that gif in the OP. Maybe it hits different people in different ways, but that sort of seems like what people who've never taken acid imagine it to be like.

oh the horror

There's definitely a shift in perception of the environment around you. I've done max, two hits (two drops) at once and that was pretty strong for me. It was enough to have mild hallucinating and really seeing the world differently.
However I've known people that have taken like 4-6 hits at once. I can't even begin to imagine the insanity involved with that much in the system at once. I would think the hallucinations and grasp on reality would be a challenge

I was always able to control it pretty well. In all my years of tripping (I'm past those days now), I never saw any real hallucinations, like walls melting or the like. The furthest I got on that front were tracers, like if someone waved their hand in front of my face, I'd see its path for a few seconds before it would slowly disappear.
For me, it was always very meditative. I'd go deep inside myself to see truths revealed about the human condition and all of the insecurities and fears were stripped away.
It was usually a beautiful experience that can't really be described in words.
I'm also a musician and LSD always made that sound really come to life, which was always one of the main reasons I would go back to it. All of your senses really come to life, as if the drug lifts a filter that would otherwise sort things out neatly so that a simple mind could understand and comprehend them.
Sometimes I could actually play while tripping, but that could get too intense.
It is also 100% impacted by your surroundings. I would never suggest taking it in a place where you're not completely comfortable and/or around people who either aren't taking it or you don't know all that well.
It will bring you closer to your significant other, friends, family, etc., but I've seen friends completely melt down when they've tried to do it outside of their comfort zone.
I had a buddy who took mescaline while at a crowded party being thrown by people who either didn't know at all or hardly knew. He wigged out, totally. I got a call from a friend saying he was losing his sh!t, so I drove over and picked him up. I basically had to babysit him for the night and pull him out of the darkness.
The next day, he told me that people at this party were taking pictures of one another and he was tripping so hard, he thought he was dead and they were taking pictures of his body while he overlooked from above. Crazy sh!t.
You have to be very careful. I'd even recommend having benzos (valium, xanex, etc.) on hand in case someone starts to have a bad trip ... those things can be the difference between someone losing it completely or having a good time.
If it goes bad... an LSD trip can last up to 8-12 hours or more depending on the amount you take, so it is a long road home.
Like I said, though, I never had any of those problems. I found it easy to control, but then again I was always careful with the situation that I chose to use it in.

I'm curious as to why you're past those days. Also have you ever tried shrooms? I've never had LSD but I have had shrooms and they're supposedly similar.

There's no particular reason I stopped doing hallucinogens. If I were in the right situation and they were offered to me, I'd probably give it another go.
It's just that, as you get older, those kinds of opportunities become less and less likely. The last time I tripped was at Bonnaroo in 2007 (shrooms) while the Flaming Lips were about to take stage. It was awesome.
I've done most of the big many times... LSD, shrooms, ecstasy/molly, etc.
When you're in your early-20s, that stuff is just around... at least it was for me. An otherwise uneventful night could turn into a real party at the snap of a finger. Friends would stop by with this or that... you know how it goes.
Things change as you get older and have responsibilities and a job/family... all that good stuff. Much less focus on partying these days.

As for ranking them in terms of intensity, LSD is at the top of the list.
1. LSD/mesaline
2. Ecstasy/molly
3. Shrooms
That isn't to say that you can't have a serious trip on shrooms, but they don't last nearly as long and you need to take more than the other stuff to really get to that point. Shrooms were probably the most "fun" of the hallucinogens that I took. A lot of times, I'd just watch TV with buddies and laugh for 4 hours.
Ecstasy is usually a 6-8 hour trip and they call it "rolling" for a reason. The effects hit you in waves. It's the most euphoric hallucinogen I have ever taken. If you get good stuff, it should give you the kind of body buzz you've never felt in your life. It can be orgasmic. Great for concerts. You have to be sure to drink a lot of water though. It's easy to dehydrate.
I explained LSD above ... it is the most serious of the three. You don't mess around with acid unless you're ready to be shown the world in a way you've never seen before. It lifts the veil.

The veil is the drug, not life itself. It covers things up making things not appear as they are. It's a lie to run away from our every day issues and problems.

Except, science tells us otherwise. Have you read the most recent studies on LSD and how it changes brain activity?
LSD's impact on the brain revealed in groundbreaking images
First modern scans of people high on psychedelic drug has given researchers unprecedented insight into neural basis for its effects
The profound impact of LSD on the brain has been laid bare by the first modern scans of people high on the drug.
The images, taken from volunteers who agreed to take a trip in the name of science, have given researchers an unprecedented insight into the neural basis for effects produced by one of the most powerful drugs ever created.
A dose of the psychedelic substance – injected rather than dropped – unleashed a wave of changes that altered activity and connectivity across the brain. This has led scientists to new theories of visual hallucinations and the sense of oneness with the universe some users report.
The brain scans revealed that trippers experienced images through information drawn from many parts of their brains, and not just the visual cortex at the back of the head that normally processes visual information. Under the drug, regions once segregated spoke to one another.
Further images showed that other brain regions that usually form a network became more separated in a change that accompanied users’ feelings of oneness with the world, a loss of personal identity called “ego dissolution”.
...
The effect could underpin the altered state of consciousness long linked to LSD, and the sense of the self-disintegrating and being replaced with a sense of oneness with others and nature. “This experience is sometimes framed in a religious or spiritual way, and seems to be associated with improvements in wellbeing after the drug’s effects have subsided,” Carhart-Harris said.
The drug can be seen as reversing the more restricted thinking we develop from infancy to adulthood, said Nutt, whose study appears in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The study could pave the way for LSD or related chemicals to be used to treat psychiatric disorders. Nutt said the drug could pull the brain out of thought patterns seen in depression and addiction through its effects on brain networks.
Amanda Feilding, director of the Beckley Foundation, said: “We are finally unveiling the brain mechanisms underlying the potential of LSD, not only to heal, but also to deepen our understanding of consciousness itself.”
