Amar'e Stoudemire signed with the Knicks today, and then announced his retirement from basketball.

He wanted to retire a Knick.

Surprised he wouldn't go with the Suns. Great career though, sucks that injuries and fire extinguishers derailed it. :(

why was it so important to retire a knick?

I hate it when players do that, not only in basketball. Soccer too. They play for a team for a few years, then sign for a massive team and then act as if that team was all that meant something even though you spent most of your career at another team.
If I was the Suns I'd be pissed.

should have been as a Sun

That team around him was good before they got Melo IMO.

Was one of the most fun Knicks teams in YEARS. They were COOKING with WilChan, Gallo and even Felton. I can't blame them for making the move at the time, especially with Melo all but putting up a neon sign that he wanted to go to NYK, but I would have been interested to see that core stay together for at least a full season or two. That said we know now just how injury prone Gallo is on top of Stat...

I don't think it would've made real noise, but the Knicks never would have had the misfortune of trading for the ultimate fool's gold player in Marshmelo.

Although he should have retired as a Sun, I understand why he chose N.Y.

He had a very vocal leader role on the team, and he brought excitement to the Garden. Gave his heart and soul when he played, and loved the spotlight.

...not to mention Jim will give him a job where he can dress to the max and be on television. Amare has charisma... this could be phase 2 for him.

Appreciated him on that team. No problem with this.

I really thought he had a few years left in him as a solid backup. Wow.

Thank you, Amare!

It will interesting to see what the Hall decides on his career.

16k points
6600 rebounds
(no assists blocks steal totals worth mentioning)

6 time all star
Rookie of the Year Award
All NBA First Team (1 time)
All NBA Second Team (3 times)

No playoff accomplishments worthy of discussing

I personally don't think he should, or will. But who knows how the Hall will feel.

I see a lot of knicks haters in here. Suns will be one of the worst teams anyway.

There's alot of what if's surrounding guys who got injured. Amare to me is one of the biggest. As a 22 year old he averaged 26/9 with 1.6 blocks on 56% shooting playing for a team that won 62 games. Averaged 30/11 in the playoffs that year that included an appearance in the WCF. 37/10 against S.A. He and Nash were crazy fun to watch and in NY he kinda proved he could it without him for that one season.

Managed a couple of other elite seasons but never really hit that level again always managed to get banged up. Wonder what happens had he remained entirely healthy or just avoided that one knee injury that really set him back. Still managed a pretty good career despite those things.

Suns owner Robert Sarver burned the bridge between them when he refused to shell out the cash, its a shame that poor business interfered with a potential retirement ceremony, because she should be remembered as a Sun, not a Knick.

Interestingly enough, Nash ended his career with more total points, I don't think he is a hall of famer but he was one of my favorites to watch, a very underrated dunker in his prime.

Amare was solid last season for the Heat. In fact their best stretch of the season was with him starting. I'm still a bit puzzled at all the DNP's in the playoffs, but maybe he just had nothing left in the tank.

I think he'll mostly be remembered as a Sun. That's where he was at his best.

Sucks his career was cut short with injuries. His first year as a Knick he had such a great year, downhill seemingly when Melo arrived.

I don't think he should, but I think there's a good chance he will. It hasn't been that hard to make the HOF in the NBA.

he wanted but the suns said no :oldlol:

Hearing Amare wanted to come back to Suns for one final season. Suns weren't interested so could be reason he retired a Knick.

Wtf cold of Phoenix.

Anyways, Amar'e has a really good chance of making the HOF if you look at how the HOF has been historically. Whether or not he deserves to be in there will depend on who you ask.

Amare = Shawn Kemp

Albeit Amare arguably had the better peak and less substance abuse issues. He might be considered for the Hall but I don't think he'll get in.

You should honestly watch him play when he was on the Mavs & the Heat. He can still work it down low, just not in the same level like he used to, but still, easy buckets is easy buckets. Just because he's not an all-star caliber player anymore, that doesn't automatically mean he can't contribute in that certain level of play. For all you know, he's a fine role player.
