View Full Version : Olympic athletes told to keep mouths closed when in Rio's contaminated water
:oldlol: @ the Olympics
Earlier this week, Olympic athletes expressed their concerns over accommodations in the Olympic Village, where only 12 out of 31 buildings passed safety inspections. Now, they face another hurdle -- and the games have not even started yet.
Health experts in Brazil have told athletes to keep their mouths shut when in Rio de Janeiro's contaminated water. According to The New York Times, scientists have tested the water and found an innumerable amount of toxins, including rotaviruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea and potentially fatal "superbacteria."

Guanabara Bay, where Rio will host windsurfing and sailing events during the Olympics, is heavily polluted. What's more, researchers from the Federal University of Rio have found that the beaches where spectators will observe the games are also dangerous and covered with garbage.
The Brazilian government acknowledged a problem with the nation's waters in Guanabara Bay seven years ago, and promised to clean them up. Officials have now said that their efforts have been ineffective.

They would have trained heavily the last 4 years for nothing then. Also, waiting another 4 years can be the difference between winning a medal and never winning a medal. Skipping this year's Olympics could mean skipping your prime.
I'd take the risk if I was competing. Just stay in the shitty hotels they'll have set up. It's only a few weeks anyway.

Naw. It's the Olympic Selection Committee's version of affirmative action.

this is so stupid. this place is not suitable for an international event that draws hundreds of thousands of people to. Im assuming they are trying to make it reasonably suitable, but that aint going to happen. its just stressfull for everyone involved because anything bad can happen, its not worth it.
my biggest impression of brazil will always be the time i waited for almost 3 hours to mail something when only 2 people were in front of me. it was f--king unbelievable.

And yeah, these Olympics held in Brasil look like they're headed towards disaster :facepalm

You've never noticed he gets defensive when people say anything bad about Israel? :facepalm
and what does Mexico have to do with Brasil, they aren't even on the same continent nor speak the same language?

I'm not Israeli. Also Israel is a relatively wealthy first world nation so I doubt the problems plaguing the hypothetical imaginary Israeli olympics would plague the Rio games.
What point were you attempting to make?:confusedshrug:

No I don't.:hammerhead:
USA is my homeland and I am American.
What does Mexico have to do with Brazil?
Both are corrupt nations with a lot of crime, gangs, drugs and problems with clean water.
I commented that Brazil seems like it is far worse off than Mexico currently is. It is also much bigger than Mexico. Hence my description "A bigger shitter version of Mexico."

There is no need to get so defensive and resort to logical fallacy, bruv. It was a simple and harmless comment. Relajarse, mano.
You are right, many of the violent gangs and drugs from Mexico -gangs and drugs that are causing so many problems for innocent Mexicans- are crossing the border and coming in to the United States too.

If the United States has to take care of Mexico's citizens who are in the US illegally, I see no reason why the US shouldn't be able to plunder Mexico's resources.

And on the day that Mexico stops sending illegal drugs in to America and stops allowing its citizens to illegally cross the border, America will stop taking 'Mexico's water.'

To be fair the problem starts with all the users
America has a severe drug problem, including legal drugs

this is why these events should literally only be held in countries with asian or white majorities.

Does anyone know a latino-dominated society that is not saturated with corruption, inefficiency, waste, and endless lines?
Serious question.
I suppose Chile is an exception, and we all know why that is (Pinochet).

This is what I wonder. Spain and Portugal are also corrupt and shit.
Why is this happening? In South America they have the excuse for mountains of drugs clouding everyone's judgement, but what are Spain and Portugal's excuses?

Spain and Portugal have higher life expectancy than the US. Murder rates are much lower. How are they shit?

Indeed. Saw this at reddit today. Detroit (43.80), Baltimore (54.98), St. Louis (59.23), New Orleans (41.44), all have a much higher murder rate than Rio (18.6) per 100000 people.

Depends on the athlete.
If I'm a basketballer I skip it.
If I'm a javelin thrower, and where I place at the Olympics secures my funding, I go.

Australia should win the Olympics every 4 years if it was judged fairly.
But then ICC wouldn't get all their millions in bribes, etc.

I'd support that. Just make Australia the eternal host of the Summer Olympics. Good weather, good facilities, and Australia has done well for a long time and deserves a nice bone throne in their direction from the world.
It is probably more free and less corrupt than the United States right now.
