View Full Version : In the 80s, Lakers tried to get Wilt as back-up for Kareem

I was reading some chapter from a Wilt book, and he stated this.

"In 1989, Dr.Jerry Buss offered me a high salary, plus revenue from Prime Ticket and i only had to play home games.
Dr. Buss actually tried for a number of years to get me to play for the Lakers alongside Kareem. I felt secure enough to handle being his back-up, but i don't believe it would have worked too long."

In the 70s the Lakers owner wanted Bill Russell to play for the lakers, while Wilt was still there.

Good thing the Lakers didn't, Wilt would of found a way to make them lose

The Rockets, Nets, and 76ers all wanted Wilt in his 50s. There were articles on it. Teams admitted it. Charles Barkley apparently pitched him in the mid 80s and again in 91.....but the 91 one was less serious. He was clearly still in shape...and would have been playing low minutes.

2 rings, 1 fmvp. Yeah, true GOAT.

30.1 > 22.5 > 18.7

1968 and 1969.

Other end of letting Reed inspire his teammates to win fmvp when he should've destroyed a one legged gimp. He lacked the killer instinct of an MJ/Russell and history is judging him accordingly.

Go watch that Conan movie he did with Arnold in the mid 80's and tell me if he moves like someone who's ready to play NBA basketball.

Given that he'd been actually battling active NBA players during the 80's in highly competitive pickup games and still holding his own, a reason of why NBA teams wanted him, I'd say that, yes, this provides better evidence than a crappy movie that asked him to move for a cumulative time of like 1 minute that he could still play NBA basketball.

Google Tyson Chandler leg day. Then flip through the same pic 20 times on different sites trying to find one that isn't edited....only to realize the first one you saw was legit.

Short shorts make lanky guys legs look like toothpicks. Wilt was naturally lanky....and lifted a lot of weights. His legs were always slim compared to his upper body.

He had to eliminate both Russell and Kareem to get those 2 rings. Arguably the #2 and #3 greatest at his position!

Meanwhile Mj was feasting on bottom 50 guys like Reggie miller, and Clyde Drexler...neither of whom played any defense.

30.1 > 22.5 > 18.7

Try providing a little context you clown.

These numbers do that.......42.9 & 0, 35 & 5, 24.2 & 6, and 17.7 & 24.

Pickup games DO NOT equate to NBA level basketball

It's a testament to his freakish genetics and athleticism that teams would be interested in him when he was in his 50s.

I don't think he would have lasted though if he had played. Freakish athlete, limited minutes or not, he was still human and a 50+ year old body can only stand so much wear-and-tear. Father Time is undefeated.

This reminds me of that embarrassing "Battle of the Legends" game between Kareem and Dr. J in 1992. God that sucked. Luckily this was in the days of black boxes so it was easy to steal PPV (it was nice seeing all those Tyson fights and other boxing matches for free, Don King put together the best undercards, probably because he could afford to by underpaying his fighters).

Afterwards, Sports Illustrated had a short article on it and said "this shows Kareem could probably still be a serviceable center at age 45".

You came to that conclusion after watching him win a half-court game against a 42 year old who retired from the NBA 5 years earlier?

During the game, Billy Cunningham "coached" the Doc and told him "get him in the open floor." :oldlol:

He's apparently unstoppable in the open floor in half court one-on-one games.

One of the greatest athletic specimens in NBA history (And an olympic-class athlete in other areas) wouldn't last long in today's game based on.... his size? Yeah, ok

LOL, you used limited fragments from a freaking movie as supposed counterevidence and you have the audacity to even compare this crap to Wilt actually having faced real NBAers.
And let's not even get started with how seriously lots of regular season games are taken.

Wilt couldve played 10 more years easily if he wanted. Dude was leading league in rebounding over Prime Kareem in his final 3 seasons.

Wilt retired for the same petty reason MJ did: They wanted to keep their career PPG over 30.
