View Full Version : Remember, when it counted Duncan could only go 2/5

... in terms of being the best player on a championship team.

He was the best Finals performer in 2 of them (1999, 2003), and his teammate outplayed him in 3 of them (2005, 2007, 2014)

So whenever someone tries and argue Duncan > LeBron, always remember Duncan was only the best Finals performer in 40% of his championships, and got carried in 60% of his Finals

Meanwhile LeBron was by far the best performer on every championship he has.

Duncan was easily the Spurs best player in '07, even if Parker was better for 4 games against a WOAT level Finals team. '05 is much closer, but I'd still give the nod to Duncan. You could even argue he was the Spurs best player in '14

Duncan is the only superstar to not care about his stats and play within a system that allowed him to win championships in THREE DIFFERENT ****ING DECADES.

Piss off.

Parker averaged 24 ppg on 52% in the Finals compared to Duncans 17ppg

Parker > Duncan

Duncan wasn't a superstar in 3/5 of his championships

Unless you count averaging 20 ppg on 42% TS in the 2005 Finals as "superstar play"

2005 Finals

Duncan: 20.6 ppg on 47%TS and 2.1 assists

Manu: 19ppg on 63%TS and 4 assists

Manu >> Duncan

So Kobe > Gasol '09 & '10?

Even if we give '09 and '10 to Kobe, Kobe would still only be the best player in a Finals 2/5 times just like Duncan.

Thats pretty bad

Percent being best player on a championship team

Kobe: 40%

Duncan: 40%

Bird: 60%

Shaq: 75%

Jordan: 83.3%

LeBron: 100%

As you can see, Kobe/Duncan do NOT measure favorably historically. Being the best player on a championship team 2/5 is bad anyway you look at it.

Parker > Duncan

Duncan averaged 22/12/3 on 52% with 3 bpg in the 2007 playoffs. He was clearly their best player in that championship run.

Obviously.

Duncan was 3rd in MVP AND DPOY voting in 07. He was the best player on that team and it really wasn't particularly close.

Just because he didn't at all need to go out and get 28 and 15 in the finals doesn't change that.

Parker > Duncan

In terms of box score watching which idiots like yourself do to judge a player, even then it's not clear in terms of Parker > Duncan in 2007 finals.

Parker scored 25 more points in the series and scored much more efficient.

Duncan had 2 more assists.

Duncan had 26 more rebounds.

Duncan had 9 more blocks.

Duncan had 2 more steals.

It comes down to this when evaluating value - do those 25 extra points on better percentages outweigh all the other areas of the game, some of which Duncan was massively better at.

Then you have the whole Parker on defense was a non-factor. Duncan was the foundation on defense and to be honest defense is why they won the series. They held the Cavs to 80 PPG for the series.

There is a difference between most valuable player and best offensive player.

This post is hilarious. Whenever anyone else wasn't the best player on their team, everyone would give them major heat. For Duncan of course, its him sacrificing his stats for the team.
