View Full Version : Social Media and Depression
It's amazing we live in a world where even seeing other people's happiness can make you depressed. It's crazy.
Why would heavy social media usage cause depression? The exposure to “highly idealized representations of peers on social media elicits feelings of envy and the distorted belief that others lead happier, more successful lives,” says the study.
Although social media relationships can have a positive effect on us emotionally, numerous studies have been conducted linking social networking to depression and social isolation while also eliciting feelings of envy, insecurity and poor self-esteem.
If you get depressed by scrolling through Facebook, you've got serious issues. Really. You should have the self control to STOP reading Facebook if it's so depressing to you. The simple fact that you compare your life to someone else's on Facebook is weird to begin with; not only that, if you don't have the common sense to know that social media doesn't represent daily life, then I don't know what else to tell you. You should probably just go play in traffic.
I've seen like a half dozen of these articles posted today telling people not to get depressed over seeing someone else's social media profile. Seriously? People get depressed over that? Well then why the **** are you reading it then? I group these losers in with the same people who bitch about people posting political articles on FB, as if some rule forces you to read something you don't agree with.
Without naming names, I've seen it on here too. People complaining about the topics being posted when it is still *get ready for this...* possible for you to not click into the thread to begin with. Nobody forced you to click into the thread. Nobody forced you to click on that article. Nobody forced you to scroll through your friends pictures; and nobody forced you to compare your life to theirs.
Are we forever going to blame someone or something for our depression rather than sacking the **** up and changing the behaviors that make you feel depressed? Why is it so, so soooooo hard to see someone else on vacation and not think 'that looks fun', and that's that?
And yes, for the record, I am bitching about people who bitch, but I feel its for a good cause. Like someone killing people, but only killing criminals (that movie Phone Booth for example).
If you can't scroll through social media without feeling shitty about your life, stop looking then.
And also, stop being such a giant *****. For real. You seem like a giant soggy ****** who needs to mature.

Social media is like only the top 5% of everyone's lives...their best moments
Everyone leaves out the shitty stuff, or just the normal stuff
So when you're going through FB it gives the false impression that everyone is having awesome moments 24/7...except you
It's not the reality though

I've seen these studies before. While I don't doubt that social media can contribute to depression, I think it's also likely that being depressed leads to more social media consumption. It's kind of a chicken or egg argument.

OP, i don't think those studies are talking about self-reliant people with lots of self control. they're talking about average goombas who have a need to feel socially connected and even have some weakness towards gambling.
gambling, in the sense that every time they scroll down they might see something funny / validating, or they might see someone humble-bragging, making them feel a little sadder and more insecure.
it's easy to deal with things which are clear wins or losses for you. it's much harder when it's a devilish mixture of the two. so a lot of them keep going back, hoping for more of the good times rather than the bad times.
but i wonder how many of them bother to remove certain friends from their news feed. that's such a mood lifter for me.

Social media and the media in general are making people feel depressed as they glorify a life that is simply not attainable. Glorifying these rich celebrities living in some mansions is something your regular 9-5 worker can only dream of. As for social media, like the other posters mention people just post their best moments and it's making people feel anxious and insecure. It's just making people compare themselves to other people and that's the worst thing you can do.. We're all different and there's no right/wrong way to live, it's pointless.

Good point, only losers spend several hours daily of facebook.
Losers tend to be more depressed than winners

Depression has nothing to do with being a 'winner' or 'loser'. I just watched an interview with Michael Phelps, and he talked in depth about how he battled through a severe clinical depression. I don't think anyone would consider Phelps a 'loser'.
My point was that these studies try to make the argument that increased social media presence leads to depression. However, people that are depressed tend to seclude themselves, which could lead to increased social media use. So the question is, are people becoming depressed because of social media? Or are people who are already depressed turning to social media? I'm sure it's a combination of both.

Aside from swimming, Phelps is a loser

OP has gotten seriously triggered
It seems like this issue has hit him close to home
i always hide some photos of fun things from some friends.
it's common sense. some of them are posting about challenges in life and needing faith or whatever to get by their financial struggles while my ass is posting vacation photos.
i don't think everyone needs to see them.
i share them only for family or close friends who i know are positively curious about where i went or what i did there.

Human beings weren't mean to have every aspect of their life broadcast to the world and for others to access every bit of information about them.
Google is a seriously evil enterprise, Facebook and social media follow closely behind.
Depression was far lower prior to widespread travel, immigration, and air transport.

Why would anyone care about the others? Mind your own life/business jfc, humanoids are dumb AF

Good company, how?
Or are you referencing this as an 'ignorance is bliss' state of affairs?

So... Robin Williams was a loser?
Jim Carrey? Heath Ledger? Terry Bradshaw? Joe Budden? Ray Charles?
I wouldn't only losers spend hours on FB. I spend quite a bit of time on there (not posting just browsing) because my closest family member lives 5 hours from me. That's how we keep track of each others lives.
It's the ones who browse FB and see someone else with a before and after picture of their exercise goals and then feel bad they were too lazy to do the same are the ones I don't get.
