Those are vise grips
Vise grips like that are often referred to as pliers. Having worked on the shop floor for years, the only vise grip I usually think of are the tabletop ones.

I have never heard of a bench/shop vise being referred to as "vise grips". First of all, the "grips" part means held in your hand, while the "vise" part means the locking jaws.

I would call those vise grips as well, but the package clearly says locking pliers.

You're right because I've never heard it being called that elsewhere either. My best guess is I was working with idiots which isn't shocking.

You need a socket wrench if you are thinking to use that.

socket wrenches and vise grips really dont have the same purpose so im not sure how i would use a socket wrench in place of this extra long and thicc vise grip.
