Jordan might not be the GOAT athlete at his respective sport. Phelps as a swimmer might be better than Jordan as a basketball player. So instead of calling Phelps the Jordan of swimming is it time to call Jordan the Phelps of basketball? Gatorade might have to replace Jordan with Phelps in their like Mike if I could be like Mike commercial.

Jordan played against shit competition in a weak expansion era, otoh phelps played the best of the best in all of his championship swimming competitions.

Phelps went 8/8 in gold medals in the 2008 olympics.

You probably don't understand how crazy that is but...let that sink in.

Way more GOAT than jordan tbh, people bring up 6/6 all the time and not consider the shit competition he was facing, phelps otoh was going up against the best swimmers in the world in every single event.

And if there were 7 other basketball related events in the olympics Jordan would have went 8/8 too

There's other events. It'd be like if Jordan had to win all of the team stuff, which he would. But then he'd have to beat the best point guards at what they do...and then beat the best centers at what THEY do.

Not to say that their dominance isn't comparable. But we're just as unlikely to see another Phelps as we are to see another Jordan. Perhaps even more so.

19 gold medals and counting.

For reference: the guy with the second most golds in swimming history, Mark Spitz, has 9.

Phelps has 23 overall and Spitz has 10. He more than doubles second place.

But then at the end of the day, its swimming, and no one really gives a shit.

Yea it doesn't really matter whether you give a shit or not. If you ever met Jordan he would show you Phelps' autograph on his mantle and tell you what a bad motherfvcker that dude is.

Greatness appreciates greatness.

Phelps and his sport are only relevant for 2 weeks every 4 years. He's great at what he does, but c'mon.

Jordan doesn't even know how to float and certainly never beat a 73 win team in the Finals.

That's the thing though, the relevancy doesn't matter as much as some here make it seem. At least IMO.

Phelps works just as hard to be great as Jordan did. In both time and energy.

Just because basketball is a more renowned athletic event year-round doesn't necessarily mean that some who participates in it is automatically > someone who excels in another incredibly challenging one.

JMO. They're two of the greatest athletes in history.

Pushing 30 and you still haven't grown up. :oldlol:

Such a terrible attitude. Just swimming....

Couldn't we apply that same 5-year-old attitude to anything?

Every sport matters. Swimming is one of the most viewed/cared about sports of the Olympic games (the biggest sporting event in world history)... so no, you can't just gloss over it. Phelps > Jordan.

I'm no where close to 30. :oldlol:

Sure, you could apply it to anything. I did. We can all get over it. It was a joke. And yes, basketball is a game too, that at the end of the day isn't that important.
