supposedly he and anthony daniels (C3PO) couldn't stand each other. baker called daniels 'the most condescending and unpleasant man he's ever met' IIRC. i think the main issue is that daniels couldn't understand why a human was needed to operate R2D2; he thought it should have been remote controlled.

from what i understand, they mostly did use remote controls for R2D2 in the later movies. kenny baker was brought back pretty much just for ceremonial reasons.
