This is racist, but surely the students have the freedom of speech to be racist, considering they are looking for roommates in a privately owned residence.

Why should the college care who people prefer to have as roommates? They're actually taking the right stance in having no stance at all.

That being said... We all know what the response would be if white students said "roommate needed... Blacks not wanted" with the reason being that it's needed for "protection".

Nick, this is in direct conflict with the Fair Housing Act. Freedom of speech does not allow you to discriminate against an individual's race when selecting a roomate, tenant or things like a job or loan applicant.

Women's studies and africana studies majors...what a surprise.

They'll be blaming white people forever when in reality it's their crap choice of major that will be their demise.

hmm someone best report this to the Fair Housing Act then.

I thought people who own a residence would be allowed to rent it out to whoever they want to.

How does this apply to things like race based affirmative action and 'diversity hires', all things that seem to be legal in this day and age in America.

The fair housing act shouldn't exist. If you own a property, you should be able to choose who you want to rent to based on whatever criteria you like.

No, no you shouldn't.

And these kids are idiots. Clearly illegal, but easily avoidable. If they were smart they would just advertise in ethnic centered publications. An easy way to get around it.

If they don't want to live with a white person, why can't we all just mind our own business? Why should they be forced to live with someone they don't want to live with? Why do you feel a need to impose your personal values onto them?

I agree with you.

And I also won't give any sort of explanation for my position since that would be helpful and productive to the discussion.

This.

To combat the Fair Housing Act....we just list the rent higher than normal. You won't see many Blacks apply.

Also, no section 8's.

Why wouldn't you want blacks to apply?

They were used as an example. I don't care what ethnicity or race they are.

Also, no section 8's.

California prohibits landlords from discriminating against Section 8 applicants. So you would not want to advertise this or tell anyone that you don't accept Section 8. It's kind of stupid, because the landlord is held to stricter standards if he accepts Section 8 vouchers, which is why it's purely opt in in most states.
