You hate the team mates of your favourite player.

E.g. Kobe fans hating Pau, Lebron fans hating Wade/Kyrie/Loe

P.S Curry fans are all kobe fans and warriorfan is just the 9empire ****0t

It's interesting but most people do take the first stance because they feel that it detracts from the accomplishments of the player they're trying to argue a case for.

Unfortunately, most "analysis" is somewhat warped. If a fan of Team x featuring favorite player John Smith wants to argue that the team is an all time great team, he has to build up the case for every player in that team and argue that they're all uber-talented.

The problem then is that it weakens the argument for the individual player (John Smith) because most other fans would say "team x was stacked so ofcourse Smith was able to win" (as they do with Bill Russell.)

To avoid having a Russell situation, most fans tend to disparage and underrate the players that surround their favourite, in a team. It's silly but it's everywhere.

It might be an American thing. In Australia you love and celebrate your team mates and never put them down to prop up one guy.

I blame Kobe haters. If Kobe haters gave Kobe credit for his titles with Shaq then Kobe stans would have given Pau credit for his titles with Kobe. Prior to the whole discrediting Kobe phenomenon great players always received credit despite playing on stacked teams. The perfect example is Magic and KAJ. Two top 5 GOATs played with each other yet they both still received full credit. So the origin of this "psychosis" is from Kobe haters.

If you go to most American cities, they root for their team as a whole with a few exceptions. Those exceptions tend to be either the largest markets or teams with megastars (Think Lakers with Kobe and Knicks to an extent with Melo). There are also exceptions of people who aren't fans of their hometown team or they feel they don't have a hometown team, so they root for their favorite players (Common with non-LA Kobe fans and LeBron fans). But outside of those exceptions, a vast majority of fans root for their teams as a whole.
