I read this article and it got me thinking:

http://www.stripes.com/news/air-force/air-force-raises-enlistee-age-limit-from-27-to-39-1.290578

Do you all think I should join the airforce? What would be the pros and cons of me doing it?

My situation currently:

I'm 30 years old and live with my mother. She financially takes care of me. I am unemployed/broke and only have 30 dollars in my savings account. I spend all money I ever get from my mom on junk food because I am addicted to junk food. I am obese at 275 pounds. I am not in shape and have no stamina. I'm weak and can't lift that much weight.

I have a two year degree/Associate's of Applied Science in Business Management I got in December 2015. I also have 60,000 in student loan debt. I have 60,000 in student loan debt because I went to a 4 year university earlier and was lazy/didn't apply myself. I was put on academic suspension from the 4 year university and went to the two year university to get my Associate's of Applied Science in Business Management.

I am unemployed and have been applying/looking for jobs since I graduated this December. I live in Americus, Georgia in the United States. Very small/rural area.

Also I am timid, have bad social anxiety, low confidence.

After reading through all of this should I join the airforce? I want to be financially successful one day. Is the airforce something that will help me be financially successful? I screwed up and it lead me to where I'm at. If the airforce isn't a good option, what can I do to get from where I'm at to something better in my life?

Make some changes in your diet, do a bit of exercise each day, and join a club in an interest area of yours. Take it slow, set some goals for 3, 6, 12 months.
See if you want to join after a year.

No offence, but sounds a bit like you have hit rock bottom which is usually what it takes to enact change in your life, so I foresee a brighter future for you.

Having said that, I'll never understand how someone can be so stupid as to pay 60k for a 4 year university, studying Business management of all things. It isn't the degree I'm knocking mind you, it's the outrageous price. How tf is it that my AA cost me no more than 8k, yet you paid god knows how much and still owe 60k for your AS?

Note for any of our younger posters who are on their way to college....if you can't afford to go to some private school/out of state university (Most of us can't....), go to a ****ing community college for your AA and transfer to a in state university for your BS and eventually masters.

I owe 60k because of all the debt I accumulated while being at a 4 year university first. I didn't get any degree from the 4 yr. university because I fukked around and was put on academic suspension.

After I was put on academic suspenion I decided to go to a two year university and I also accumulated debt there. I got an Associates in Business Management when I graduated from the two year college.

yes you should. because the other option is to make 15 dollars an hour as a manager at mcdonalds. and trying to pay off your loan with that kind of job is impossible. in the military service, you get a shit load of benefits from the government. my buddy who was in Afghanistan for 2 years is on disability because he injured both of his knees jumping from a plane, loss alot of his braincells from 2 heat strokes and has PTSD from shooting kids with bombs. the good thing is that the airforce doesnt do combat like the army does.

I was in the Air Force but I have been out for more than 10 years now. I don't know what kind of changes they have made since than. I imagine if they are increasing the age limit to 39 (wow) than they are probably lowering the physical standards, which I really hope they are not. You want your Airmen, sailors, soldiers, etc to be in great shape. I would encourage you to go for it, but prepare yourself. Get into shape..lose weight. But the most important thing about the military is not your body it's your mind. You can't be a quitter. You have to be disciplined. The weak will be weeded out..at least they were when I was there. Oh, the Air Force as the best looking chicks. I was really young when I went in..I was nerdy and innocent and still got action. You can save tons of money in the military. That can help you pay off some of those loans. You can even go to school if you like. Try to get a good score on your asvab and do something that you like. Only sign a contract that guarantees the job that you want.

I am a virgin and not good with women, should I still be able to get some action with women?

How long would I have to be in the Airforce? Also, when you say I can go to school is that at the same time I'm in the airforce?

Can you explain what it is like in the airforce in terms of responsibilites, day in the life, etc?

Finally, job wise how can I find out what job I would like?

If what you say is true, you'll need to do some training first. I can't imagine you'll ever make it being fat, lazy, and weak

Good luck though

Minimum 4 years with reserves after your active duty is up. Really just talk to a recruiter. I've been out of the Air Force for awhile. A recruiter will fill you in on everything. Asvab score will determine what your best suited for job wise. If you have to study there are books. You want to get a good score so you can have more options. The Air Force had the highest minimum entry score to get in..unlike the army which you can be borderline retarded to get in. You can take classes while in active duty or you can use your G.I. Bill after ..it's up to you. Well theres boot camp first...so get into shape. Run..improve your strength. They will break you when you first get in and make you into an airman. I remember some people couldn't even make it through boot camp..they came in out of shape..they were mentally weak and gave up. Prepare yourself. After bootcamp is your schooling. The school is more relaxed but still strict. You have get up in the mornings and still do PT. Than go to class. We marched to class. The classes are accelerated..they go fast..so study if you must. After that you go to your duty station which can be anywhere. More freedom when not in uniform. I advise not to get into trouble. Oh make sure you always keep your room/living area clean.

1. How long is active duty? 4 years plus the length of active duty will be the minimum time needed?

2. I am very afraid of heights and don't want to be involved in combat. Does the airforce deal with any of these things? I just want to be on the ground at all times and not have to be involved in combat.

3. I am a virgin and am not good with women, would I still be able to get some action while in the airforce?

4. Because of my age will I get my own room or would i have to be with someone else?

5. How can I explain to my mother this is an option I want to strongly consider? (Joining the airforce) She is sort of overprotective of me/sheltered me. Although, depending on how you respond to question #2, if I have to do things that involve heights or deal with combat I don't know if I could consider this option.

These are all the questions I have, thanks for your input.

This dude wants to join the airforce but is afraid of heights :lol

Stop looking for the easiest way out, get up and go do something rather than ask around on an internet forum and then continue sitting on your ass, not doing anything.

Fukk off. All you do is criticize me so please get out of the thread. You are not trying to help but just decide to make that post.

I don't feel I am looking for the easy way out, I wouldn't be asking anybody anything. Instead I would just be sitting around all day doing nothing.

Talk to a recruiter. If you want to stay on the ground than a take a job that doesn't entail flying. As far as room that depends on your rank and if the barrack if it's full. Higher the rank the first dips. Combat..well that depends on your job. But everyone is required to know how to shoot a gun. There is at minimum very light combat training. Gun range. Going out on the field for a few days with a heavy ass back pack. I remember we had a war game. I had my throat slit in less than 5 minutes. It was chaotic. It was a simulated war scenerio. Oh in basic it's funny but they only give you like a minute to eat your meals..you're going to lose weight.

first of all, you will need to do this for you and you only. ask for advice, but it's you that has to live with your decision at the end of the day. seriously, at your #5...if you feel like this is the choice for you, you go at it and don't look back. tell your mom you are need of change and want to improve your life. unless, she's anti-military or something, that should be good enough.

you're 30! no reason to ask mommy for permission anymore. if it's tough on her, then whatever. this can be a great opportunity for you to come back a better person. that's what you stress if you have to. tell her you will come back better than ever. i mean, is she not tired of paying for all your stuff at this point? idk what the situation is but is this coddling why you are still home? no offense man cuz i've been out of a job too and it sucks. not sure why you would have to really convince her on this tbh.

there's always going to be pros and cons. the air force will take care of you financially if you go about it the right way, and with benefits. that said, PTSD is a real thing and even if you have a 'ground job', it still exists. say you work with drones? depending on your job, you may pilot one of those and be asked to pull the trigger on a 'target'. there's great risk of killing innocents and collateral damage. you will have to go to bed at night after seeing that destruction. shit is not easy...on anyone. anyway, that's only one example. you won't be on the ground per se, but you will still very much be in 'combat'. btw, this is only growing in the air force. drones are kinda the future in a way.

agree w/ g-train that you should start exercising now if you're not already. not only will you lose weight, you will gain confidence. cut out the junk food. stop eating carbs after 7 pm. try to eat more fresh raw foods. start off easy...speed walk, light weights with many reps. do some burpees, they are insane fat burners and you can do them pretty much anywhere. be more active. i can say this because i lost 60ish lbs myself.

basically all of what senelcoolidge said.

you shouldn't look at this as a way of getting laid either. sounds like you need to work on being more social to begin with. getting laid is secondary...it shouldn't be a factor in your decision. picking a job/career based on 'will i get laid' probability...umm. if you wanna get laid, go to vegas and get an escort ffs.

if you are afraid of heights and don't have a passion to fly, that seems like a weird route anyway. most pilots have had that passion since they were a child, or at least had some 'awakening' to it.

you will get yelled at by drill sergeants. they're gonna call you names. just realize it's not personal. they do it to everyone. they are there to weed out the weak that can't handle yelling. if you take it personal and are thin skinned, you're gonna struggle with it.

anyway, like senel said, talk to a recruiter. think it over. don't sign anything until you are sure you wanna join. good luck either way

275? Come on, man. Air Force isn't taking you. You need to get serious about your health before you even think about the military. Time is running out. 30 years old and it will only get harder to lose the weight.
