I'll be real I wasn't sure what to expect, but this album and the visual album are great pieces. Not sure if I can even list the album as an r&b album. He has collaborations from different genres and the sound is indeed very eclectic. You can hear Radiohead in some songs and Jony Greenwood himself makes an appearance.

Im really digging this album and the visual album as well (except when he falls into the standard/current r&b styling).

If you're a fan of music in general check it out and you'll be surprised by some of the choices he makes.

I'm really enjoying it so far.

If you're expecting cO pt 2 you'll be disappointed. On this album Frank is trying new sounds and taking from lots of different places. To me the hazy, inconsistent, almost broken-up feel of the album is Frank reflecting on his youth when he was wild and reckless, particularly with drugs (Be Yourself > Solo is the clearest example of this).

Casual listeners won't love it because there aren't any bangers and you can't listen to it as background music. It's dense and not obvious and like Endless it's really just one big song.

I actually find it quite similar to CO in many ways: a concept-ish musical journey, with varied sounds and trademark film-like atmosphere.

You can also find a number of parallels between the songs (Skyline To and Sierra Leone, Nights and Pyramids...) and moments (look, here's Andre 3000 going nuts again)

In a sense it reminds me of Late Registration: a more lush, refined version of a classic rookie effort, with fewer hits and a slower, darker vibe.

What's unique about Frank though is that he also released the already underrated Endless in between his first and second albums... Showing very early on in his career that he also has it in him to confound expectations with a Kid A style release whenever he feels like it.

I wouldn't be surprised if his next album goes in a completely different direction. Especially since trying to outdo CO on its own terms could quickly become a creative trap. So get ready for flamenco Frank, or whatever his next thing happens to be.
