The amount of tall tales?

No way, but he's a damn close second.

Wilt is definitely the basketball Daniel Boone. In sports he's probably second only to Bo Jackson. Michael Jordan has some but it ain't even close.

Though he's definitely the most storied player in modern media. The amount of times we've seen one of those often-regurgitated classic MJ moments is unprecedented.

What tall tales does Jordan have besides the ridiculous 48' vert thing? Anyone who's an athlete at any level knows that isn't true.

Compare that with crap like getting into the car accident and the car being totaled with the exception of the shape of your body; dunking a ball so hard it came down and broke someone's foot; 20k women etc.

Not close.

Flu game, setting finals record in 3's after media criticism, dropping 45 with no pippen and hitting the game winner to win the ring at 35 years old are all well documented; and if you refuse to believe what you see, I can't help you.

I believe that actually came from Tim Grover.

Why Draft Combines are a Lousy Predictor of Success

This is for all the guys who firmly believe that their entire lives would have been completely different

1. Being the GOAT and not even being arguable.
2. Not ever going to a 7th Game in the Finals because "he didn't allow it".
3. Being always great and clutch when it mattered.
4. Losing to the Orlando Magic in '95 because he was "rusty", then getting angry, working himself into shape and destroying them in '96 (although he actually had better stats in '95 in most fields and despite the Bulls beating Orlando even in a couple of games he wasn't outstanding).

The difference with Wilt is, Wilt wasn't having behind him the entire marketing industry of the NBA to create such kinds of tall tales to promote the "Wilt brand", so whatever stories you hear about him will come out of the mouths of people who watched him live (like the story with the ball incident) or by Wilt himself. Jordan is lucky enough to live in the mass media greatest era, so he doesn't need to do anything himself.

However, lest we forget:

5. Jordan: 'I could have scored 100 points' in today's NBA"
6. Pippen claimed Jordan would average 50 ppg in today's NBA. A few ISHers even agreed with that.

For the record...

Chamberlain played 14 seasons in the NBA. Played on 13 playoff teams, 10 of which made it to at least the Conference Finals. Six times he went to the Finals. Four teams that won 60+ games. Four of which had the best record in the league. Two of which went 68-13 and 69-13, and won titles.

In the post-season, he had playoff season runs of 28, 29, 33, 35, 35, and 37 ppg. He had playoff series in which he averaged 37, 37, 39, and 39 ppg. He had four playoff games of 50+ points, including the only three by a GOAT in "must-win" games (as well as a 46 point "must win" playoff game, and a 45 point "must win" Finals game.) In his "scoring" prime, over 20% of his playoff games were 40+ point games.

How about post-season rebounding? Second all-time, at 24.5 rpg (behind Russell's 24.9 rpg...but more on that in a moment.) Again, played in 13 post-seasons, and his playoff season LOW was 20.2 rpg. Played in 29 post-season series, and was the leading rebounder in 28 of them (in the one in which he did not lead, he was outrebounded by a 21.0 to 20.0 rpg margin...by a PF, whom he would slaughter when he faced him as a center a few years later.) This "choker" is also the all-time Finals leader at 24.6 rpg. Had post-seasons of 29 and 30 rpg. In his last post-season, at age 36 (nearly 37), he played in 17 playoff games, and averaged 23 rpg (in a post-season that averaged 51 rpg per team),,,the next highest since... 18.3 rpg (by Garnett in a three game post-season.)

Shot .522 from the floor in his post-season career, which is deceptive, since the league shot about .435 in that same span.) Shot .559 from the floor in his six Finals (again, in post-seasons which shot about .435 in that same span)...all while outshooting his opposing HOF centers (every Finals)...by a .559 to .439 margin.)

Post-season RECORDS, you ask? How about the most 20-20 post-seasons in NBA history (NINE)? How about the most 30-20 post-seasons in NBA history (FOUR?) How about the most 20-20 games, or 30-20 games, or 40-20 games, or even 50-20 games in NBA history (hell, he had two 50-30 games...both in "must win" games)?

How about an "unofficial" record? Tim Duncan is the "official" all-time post-season shot-blocker, with 568 in his 251 career playoff games. Chamberlain played in 160 play-off games, and Julizaver found block info for 81 of them...590 blocks!

How about Wilt leading a post-season with 9.0 apg, which is, by far, the highest ever by a center. Or putting up back-to-back playoff series of 28-27-11 and 22-32-10? Or having three verified Quad-Doubles, and a few more triple-doubles with estimated block totals that were well in the teens.

How did Wilt "the choker" do in his 37 "must-win" and "series clinching" playoff games? Went 24-13, and averaged 29.5 ppg, 26.4 rpg, 4.2 apg, and shot .546 from the floor. All while destroying his opposing centers (most of whom are in the HOF.)

Coach-killer? Frank McGuire is in the HOF as a coach. Coached one season in the NBA. Wilt averaged 50 ppg, and single-handedly carried basically what had been a last-place roster when he arrived, to a game seven two point loss in the EDF's against a HOF-laden 60-20 Celtics team.

Butch Van Breda Kolff. Coached several seasons in the NBA. His greatest season...and in his ONE season with Chamberlain...going 55-27, and losing a game seven in the Finals by two points (and leaving Wilt on the bench in the last five minutes.)

Joe Mullaney. Coached multiple seasons in the NBA, and had great success in the ABA. Best season in the NBA...his ONE season with WILT.

Neil Johnston. Coached two seasons in the NBA, both with WILT. Inherited a last place team in Wilt's rookie season, and immediately went 49-26. Had a career W-L% of .617 in those two seasons.

Dolph Schayes. Coached several seasons in the NBA. Went 76-46 with Wilt, and 75-136 without him.

Alex Hannum. HOF coach. Best seasons...with WILT.

Bill Sharman. HOF coach. Best seasons...with WILT.

Wilt faced Russell in 143 career H2H games. AVERAGED a 29-29 game in those 143 H2H's. Outscored Russell in 132. Outrebounded Russell in 94 of them. Outshot Russell by a collective .497 to .382 margin in those career H2H's. Faced Russell in eight playoff series, and either outplayed him, or downright crushed him, in every one of them. Had post-season series against Russell of 22-32-10; 22-25-7; 28-30; 29-28; 30-31; 31-27; and 34-27. Outscored, outrebounded, and outshot Russell from the field in every one. Outblocked him in the known H2H games. Had four games of 40+ against him in the post-season (and 24 overall), including a 50-35 "must-win" playoff game (and a total of five 50+ games overall, with a high game of 62 points.)
Badly outplayed Russell in their "must win" playoff games. And slaughtered his eight-time defending champion (and 60-21) Celtics when he had an equal roster that was healthy. None other than John Wooden claimed that had Wilt and Russell swapped rosters, and it would have been Wilt holding all the rings.

Short white guys? Guys like the 6-9 Willis Reed, 6-9 Clyde Lovellette, and 6-9 Dave Cowens. Or the 6-9 1/2 Russell, who just happens to have been the same height as Dwight Howard, DeAndre Jordan, Andre Drummond, and DeMarcus Cousins. Or the 6-9 1/2 Elvin Hayes (see previous comment); or the 6-9 1/2 Bob McAdoo; or the 6-11 Nate Thurmond (who had a higher reach than Wilt himself; or the 6-11 Bob Lanier; or the 6-11 Walt Bellamy (who was actaully 7-0 BTW); or the 7-2 Artis Gilmore (yep...outplayed him in the 71-72 ABA-NBA ASG); or the 7-2 KAJ (whom he oujtplayed in both their post-season H2H series BTW.) ALL in the HOF!

Of course, he also faced many other 6-11 to 7-3 guys, as well...most all of whom would measure between 1-2" taller with today's methods. Slaughtered them all, too. Guys with the same height and skill-sets as what Shaq faced in the majority of his Finals.

Yep...that was Wilt the "loser", "choker", "coach-killer", Russell's "bitch", and whom faced nothing but short white guys.

Laz, why did Wilt miss the playoffs in his prime??

Why did KAJ miss the playoffs TWICE in his prime?

And how did MJ make the playoffs on a 30-52 team?
