The Fed will pull the plug (interest rate hike) within 20 years, once they're done milking the American economy. I'd guess closer to 10 years, because honestly I thought it would happen before 2020. The stock market will crash. The value of the dollar will plummet, followed by years of hyperinflation. Business's and banks will crumble. The unemployment rate will skyrocket. I guarantee you that homeless, unemployed, and desperate American citizens aren't going to patiently wait in bread lines at soup kitchens. And since most Americans have been raised in a disposable, service oriented economy, most of them will have the knowledge or resolve to survive on their own. That will probably lead to large scale panic, an explosion of crime, and eventually martial law. Some States will probably attempt to secede from the Union, but without a standing military that could prove to be tricky. This type of economic collapse will happen across the globe, as almost every developed nation in the World is tied to the U.S. economy and the Central Banking system. Out of the chaos a new global Government will form, controlled by the elite banking families that currently control the Federal Reserve and the Central Banking system. What their endgame goal will be isn't clear. My guess is their first step would be to drastically reduce the human population to a more controllable number. A few well-placed nuclear strikes would probably accomplish that goal, as well as establishing the fear required to control the newly established servant class.

If 'not lasting' means it will crumble and get overtaken by some foreign entity or break up ala Soviet Union then not in the near future.
If 'not lasting' means economic depression or a shift in demographic or a change of government then it already happened a few times.

As long as it remains the land of opportunity where you can work hard and be successful, regardless of your race, religion, skin color, etc. People across the world come to the U.S. because it offers more opportunity than anywhere else. We are basically sucking the talent from all the other countries because of the opportunities we provide. Hell, we even charge international students a ridiculous amount of money for tuition compared to our own citizens, and they still come here!
What. an. empire.

Not lasting does not mean any of those things.
And when have we had a change of government?

Even if China did do this, it doesn't mean the "US empire" is over.
History is filled with the multiple empires existing at the same time.

What do you suggest investing in or doing to partially offset this hypothetical collapse?

United States of America will still be the leaders and ambassaders of earth all the way into the galactic era of this universe. The only thing that will stop us if we get into a war with some advanced alien civilization that decides to obliterate our planet.

People who actually believe that China could overtake the United States has no idea of how these things work. The majority of China is a third world country.

This is a strange faith considering those things are more likely to destroy the human species than anything else.
We've passed the period of Jugurtha (when every politician is for sale to outside buyers) and are now moving on to the times of Marius and Sulla. Same things are at the bottom of the mass revolt too: importation of cheap labour (in the case of Rome: slaves) that turns an increasingly immobile and miserable underclass against its masters. Meanwhile, those with slaves, living their lives of luxury, tried desperately to pretend the problem didn't really exist (a la wealthy bourgeois Americans living their luxurious lives off the backs of others).

This cheap labor has pulled BILLIONS out of poverty and created MILLIONS of millionnaires (3 Million millionaires in China alone in 2013, many more today, what was that number in the 80s? **** all!).
This gloom and doom horseshit is nonsense and if anyone was keeping score we would see that we have already outran MILLIONS of points in time where the naysayers said society would falter.
It won't, there are safeguards in place.
We are in a better place than we have ever been globally and it is only getting better every day.
RE the US, the top ten companies in the world are all American as are 540 of the top 2000.
Where is the problem, where is the loss of power.
Military? LOL
Cultural exports? Hahahaha
The US has used soft power and economic might to forge a kind of leadership the world has never seen.
They aren't going anywhere.

They aren't going anywhere. This kind of mindless hubris and braggadocio is always rampant before the fall of Empires. Complacency always precedes chaos. The fact the US has a large military is not meaningful: it just makes it easier to transition from chaos to military dictatorship. The people have no power and have been completely disenfranchised: mass indebtedness has put our governments up to sale to countries like Saudi Arabia and China, who dictate policy in Washington (there are no real US interests in Syria or Yemen, and yet we are involved heavily there--why do you think this is? How do you think this empowers the American people?).
And like Rome, with the exception of southerners (who will not likely continue to fight for a country that increasingly despises them), the military is coming to be increasingly dominated by minorities, as the patrician class no longer has the mettle for such things. These are not signs of health or of strength, and the only reason you think they are is because you have a narrow and limited understanding of history, and a superficial understanding of just about everything else.
"we got millionaires and billionaires, woooo!!!"
:hammerhead:
Collapsing Empires are very often full of super-rich people (and a swelling underclass). That is not some great cultural achievement: it is already a certain sign of decadence and decay. Good luck with your predictions; it will be shown before long that they are wholly absurd, optimistic to the point of insanity.

America needs to address it's over reaching military, which in turn means countries that can afford to look after themselves should. There is no reason why many members of NATO can't commit to their spending agreement. Germany and France have Top 10 GDP's and currently aren't paying their share. America also needs to realize that certain shit parts of the world are shit because of the people living there. By all means invest and promote democracy and the American way of life but don't get yourselves stuck into conflicts which supposedly are designed to help these people. If they want a change they can have a revolution.
America also needs to move away from crony capitalism and trickle down economics. I read an article yesterday that the Government bought $11 million worth of unsold cheese which is just sitting in a warehouse waiting to be destroyed. Why is the government using tax payers money to prevent the dairy industry from losing profits? Crony Capitalism is costing the U.S approximately $24 billion a year. Much like the government bailing out the U.S car companies in 2008. The problem with U.S car companies is that you make rubbish cars that no one outside the U.S wants. Fix that problem or let someone else who will. This is a complete waste of hard working American's taxes.
The welfare state. All modern countries should have a form of net to catch people and stop them falling through the cracks in society. But having people reliant on welfare isn't addressing the problem. The problem is these people are poor and the best way for them to succeed in life is to give them the opportunity to make themselves rich. How likely are you to succeed if you are in a constant state of government need and how do you actually go about fixing it? Education
Education based on transferable skills and principals that can be used in private enterprise and/or the workplace should be the foundations of what you learn. America much like the U.K is also letting people form and use their own language. I often hear an "Urban" form of English in my work place and simply put it makes them sound unprofessional and stupid. I would think twice about hiring someone if they are going to be representing my company in this manner.
Living within your means isn't anything to be ashamed of. Much like here in the U.K America has too much of a love affair with material goods. To me it's insane that we have a culture where it's perfectly normal to take a picture of expensive "Stuff" you've just bought and share it on social media. This is done because people feel inadequate. A culture where we celebrate vacuous celebrities who stand for nothing except platitudes of universal morality. How often do you hear a multi millionaire condemn society for not taking care of refugees somewhere 1000's of miles away but completely fail to mention the homeless veteran they probably stepped over in the street to get into their chauffeur driven cars? Hypocrisy like this is rampant!
If America and the west can start to see how devoid our lives are of any real meaning and address the problems then we can start fixing our broken societies. It doesn't have to be anarchy but we're in need of some soul searching.
Anyway I've gone off on a rant.

Anyway I've gone off on a rant. This is a good post. Agree with it all except for a slight quibble on education, which I think is more about the formation of good character and the tools of independence and independent thinking than about skills--the move to turn education into mere instruction has been incredibly destructive in my view.
The US Empire is definitely suffering from massive overreach, and to make another rather easy comparison to Rome, this problem led to their implosion also; the Romans also imposed themselves and their systems onto foreigners "for their own good" and "for the sake of the liberty of peoples" much like America does. The parallels are vast.
