August most violent month in Chicago in nearly 20 years

In the weeks since he was shot in the back, 10-year-old Tavon Tanner has undergone several operations to repair the damage from the bullet that tore through his small body and remains lodged between his shoulder and his chest.

The fifth-grader is still in the hospital and still in pain, according to his mother Mellanie Washington. He doesn't talk as much and cries more often. Sometimes he'll ask if police have arrested the person who shot him.

"I tell him they will soon," Washington said. "They will." No one was in custody as of Monday.

Tavon was among more than 400 people shot in Chicago this month. There have been at least 78 homicides, marking August as the most violent month in the city in almost 20 years, according to data provided by the Chicago Police Department. And there are two more days to go.


The city hasn't seen a deadlier month since October of 1997, when there were 79 homicides. For the whole year, the count was 761, according to department numbers.

Chicago has recorded 487 homicides and more than 2,800 people shot so far this year, compared to 491 homicides and 2,988 people shot all of last year, according to Tribune data.

Also... I read today that 2015 was the deadliest year ever here in Indianapolis. Of course, I never noticed, seemed like any other year to me; IMPD said that the vast majority of those homicides occurred in one of six 'hot zones' for crime. My guess is, it was mostly on the SE and SW corners.

To his 'sure to come soon' point... violence overall has been down, way down, over the past few decades. A lot that has to do with new policing techniques, the availability of new forensic procedures, and CCTV cameras everywhere we turn.

But to the point of the article... by the end of this month, more people will have been killed in Chicago then ALL of last year.

The usual suspects (BLM for starters, but more or less anyone who claims police brutality is a problem while ignoring the 10x as many deaths from other gun violence) will be nowhere to be found.

I don't about the most recent statistics but a few years back Chicago only solved 17% of its murders, it was the worst in the nation. San Diego and Denver where tied for #1 with 92%. No one wants to talk to the cops, no one wants to get murderers and criminals off the streets. It's a statistical fact that black people care less about other black people than any other community. :(

Welp... let's see.... since the vast majority of crime is race on race (black on black, white on white, whatever), and given the areas in which these 500 people were killed (where practically the entirety of said area is black), I'm making a pretty informed guess. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that probably 450 of the 500 are black, and of those 450, statistically you could argue that about 415 of those 450 were shot by another black person.
