1- Bob Costas circa 1998-2000
2- Marv Albert (Early 90s)
3- Dick Stockton (Late 80s)
4- Hubie Brown
5- Mike Brean (2008-2012, at his peak)
6- Kevin Harlan
7- Jeff Van Gundy
8- Mark Jackson
9- Bill Walton
10- Magic (1993 playoffs)
11- Isiah (late 90s)
12- Doug Collins
Or anyone else?
Personally, I thought Costas captured the historical impact of certain moments better than Albert (or later, Breen) ever did. He was more eloquent and though he didn't scream and cause the excitement that some of the others did, he was breathtaking to listen to.
Mark Jackson and Bill Walton were as bad as each other. Both awful. Both made you wish you'd busted an eardrum.
Thoughts? (No Kobe stans please. Thanks)

Hard for me to rank them really, but I do like Van Gundy. Guy keeps it real and says shit that goes against usual narratives. This is probably one of the funniest segments

I also enjoy Marv

I think you lumped up the play by play announcers with the actual commentators.
Most of them you mentioned are good, Walton simply tries to entertain I think, the worst is the Cavs analyst, but in general, the ex players are the worst bec they don't really analyze, they just go by what they "feel".
Czar, Hubie, JVG and even Collins are great in educating and actual analyzing IMO.
The most underrated play by play right now is Spero Dedes, the guy used to do it for the Lakers and the Knicks swoop in and got him. :(

Kevin Harlan has a voice that could make commentary on grass growing and it would be exciting.

right now Harlan or Ian Eagle. Marv is one of the best all time ofc but he's getting old now. I like Webber and Brent Barry for color commentators.

This the greatest line said by an announcer in the history of the game. Many have tried to mimic this man's greatness and many have failed.
