What are your pro tips for cruising ISH?

a couple that many people seem to underutilise or just don't know about:


instead of jumping in from the front page or the forums, use the control panel (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/usercp.php) link instead. it will show you all your subscribed threads that got a reply since your last visit. you won't need any special notifications other than that.

use google whenever you want to search the site. format is "site:insidehoops.com" plus whatever terms you're looking for, such as username, thread title, content, etc.

if someone's being an ignorant c-nt, then it's easy enough to put them on ignore. problem is, you'll still see a visibly marked place wherever one of their posts lie.

solution: to make them totally disappear, go to your browser's online extensions collection and install "superignore for vbulletin" or something named like that. there should also be extensions to enhance your forum browsing experience to make it behave more like reddit / etc. it's like an instant upgrade to the forum software.

this one hit me the other day:

posters who are basically just trolls, and yet don't actually realise they're trolls.

there should be a special name for them, maybe based off a TV character or something.

use your ignore list, especially if you ever spend time in any of the politics threads. there are some posters who never contribute anything worth reading, ignoring them makes ISH much more enjoyable.

does that work for you? i think that function is turned off for most posters, unless you're canadian i guess.

another one people seem to have trouble with all the time and don't even realise it--


certain sites like imgur do not want their media being hotlinked, and are now blocking users from doing so. the problem is that typically the person doing the hotlinking has basically fooled themselves in to thinking that the hotlink worked.

the reason that happens is because if you just displayed a juicy GIF / image in your browser, under the usual browser settings it also got downloaded to your temporary image cache file. usually that's a good thing, because if you reload that page in the near future, it will now display faster.

unfortunately, other users who haven't cached that same image from the site you linked from are just going to see a broken image icon. most people will probably just ignore it, and that's likely the only clue you might possibly have that it didn't work.

coming full circle, the reason imgur (for example) doesn't let you hotlink anymore is that they only want people to view their media on their own site, where their ads are in play and they're trying to keep you clicking.


SOLUTION: use tineye or google image search to find an alternate source for whatever image you're trying to share. it even works for GIFs. also, it can't hurt to paste the URL of the image underneath if you have any doubts as to whether it will display correctly.
