The wing rotation feels clear (Hill, Hood and Hayward start, backed up by Exum, Burks and Johnson,)

Considering how good Mack and to a lesser extent Neto were I don't see it being that clear.

but the big rotation much less so. Assuredly Derrick Favors and Gobert will start, but will Quin Snyder pull one relatively early to stretch the floor and ensure one of them is always playing?

I'd guess he won;t worry about it as much as last year but it depends on how the reserves play together. Booker/Lyles sucked together!

Will Lyles play see 20-25 minutes as third big, or will Boris Diaw, um, eat into them? Is Jeff Withey (who advanced stats loved last year) assured a spot as the fourth big who anchors the second unit defense?

Withey won't play! Deal him!

Imagine if Jeff Withey came out with his usual impressive defense and was hitting consistent mid-range jumpers.

hit them last year better than any big not named Lyles

According to Lyles, a primary objective this summer has been to change his body. In addition to his skill work, the second-year pro has been swimming and working extensively with weights. He has also assembled a close-knit team of experts to help him along the way.

Good! He certainly needed to at least get toned.

He's 6-6, long, his shot has started to develop a lot now, he can get to the basket, very good court vision.

Hood, by the way, is excited to have Johnson around. "It's a great feeling to have that mentor type of guy that I haven't had for my first couple years," Hood said.

Who needs mentors when you can have all young guys! :facepalm

Shelvin Mack, too, raved about the example of Johnson. Hood, Mack and Johnson all worked out together in Atlanta during the summer, where they saw firsthand the effort it requires from Johnson to stay strong going into his 16th year in the NBA.

Maybe Shelvin can actually play with these guys after all?

The offense has to be connected to the defense. Good defense has to lead to good offense.

Which is the main reason why Dante has to prove he can play offensively. They certainly have some guys that are questionable on the defensive side too so I don't see how Mack and Exum can be ruled out either.

Throw in a healthy Exum and Burks and you now run 11 or 12 deep on this roster, and actually have more of a problem finding minutes for all of the talent at Quin Snyder's disposal.

I'd say they have 13 rotation caliber players with Exum's status pending until I actually see it on the court.

But the highlight was definitely at the end, when Favors hit two consecutive threes. The first, from the top of the arc, was a scramble situation after an out-of-bounds play with a quickly shrinking shot clock. The second, though, was a set play for Favors to take the outside look from the elbow, and he swished that one too. If that's a weapon for Favors, it gives the Jazz some really interesting spacing possibilities.

love to see him hit a perimeter shot period after last year's horrendous shooting display

Exum played his first game outside of the friendly confines of Zions Bank Basketball Center for the first time in 14 months, and looked okay. He too easily was steered baseline and towards the corners of the court, which often resulted in turnovers. He missed two jumpers from the elbow, as well as a corner shot. He did seem more aggressive in the open court, but the offense didn't flow very well out there when he ran it. He did try to deliver an alley-oop pass to Hayward, which was intercepted by Joe Johnson.

Doesn't sound like he's one of their top 10 guys to me. If he's not and he plays it's a joke.

Exum was hesitant when he did get into the lane. He struggled with decision-making off pick-and-roll action and ended up passing when he should shoot, and vice-versa.

They've got a lot of guys that should have the ball in their hands before him. If he can hit the 3 he could be a 3 and D while the rest of his game develops. Running the D-league team with Paige would probably be best for a while though.

The 1st 3 he hit was ugly. Shot looks flat so let's see if he can keep that up anyway.

Mack was probably their 4th best player just like the end of last year. Who would have thought? :lol

He's been playing well during training camp. He also played well during the offseason, running the show for Brazil in the Olympics.

He played well last year and he played well after he was drafted in the summer league. The guy is a player.

"It's just about being ready," Neto said. "But this is just how the league is. You think you come back a better player, and opportunity doesn't come. Of course I know I won't have the same minutes as last year, but I'm good with that. I want to learn from the guys that are on the team playing ahead of me, and if I can do that, we're going to have a great season as well."

So why not play Mack and the guys that do know what's going on until someone takes their spot? :confusedshrug:

Snyder said following the game that Exum looked like a guy who hadn't played in 14 months.

While Neto proved that he was capable of surviving in the NBA, averaging 5.9 points, on respectable shooting percentages, 43 percent from the floor, and nearly 40 percent from the three-point line, he looks better suited as a reserve guard with the Jazz.

Maybe? I still think he could have done a lot more last year if given the chance.

The major determining factor for Exum will be how many minutes he has available to him in the rotation.

As many as he earns. If he can hit the 3 there's plenty. If not he should be in the D-league.

Mack, a more experienced guard, likely gives the Jazz a better opportunity to win games now, which may gain him minutes over Exum as the season progresses.

wow more props for Shelvin. After last night(not to mention last year) I really can't see how Mack isn't in the thick of things

If the Jazz are looking to keep Exum around the 20 minute per night average, lining up at both guard spots may very well solve that issue.

From what I saw last night he shouldn't be playing any pg except at the defensive end.

Gobert finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds, which is difficult to complain about. Nevertheless, I'm going to do it anyway: he still struggled with his hands, especially early, on catching dump-off passes and lobs that could have been easy points. That's going to have to change.

he looks improved at that end to me certainly

But I think tonight's first-half rotations are a decent indication of what Snyder's baseline thinking is, to be adjusted and experimented with as more evidence comes out.

I wouldn't be so sure. If you remember right the Burkes' started all pre-season last year before Neto and Hood took over in the regular season. Mack certainly looked like he should be starting in this game as he did a year ago.

The good news is that he was still capable defensively, and he hit two shots from 3-point land, including a nice pick and roll three where his defender went under the screen.

The problem is defense isn't enough for him to play on this team.

There are still warts, however. Joe Johnson hasn't found a rhythm within the offense, as he scored two points on 1 of 4 shooting. The same can be said about Boris Diaw as well.

Diaw made some nice passes!

One of the things the Jazz like so much about Dante Exum is his ability to defend both guard positions. It's the skill that got him on the floor as a rookie, and one of the reasons he'll be in Wednesday's starting lineup in place of Rodney Hood.

He started because of potential. Many other guys have proven more

"Chandler is a tremendous player and leader, and he's the kind of guy you want on a team with those young guys to just help them continue to learn and get better," Snyder said.

Than why didn't you want vets around your young guys?

In the final quarter, the Jazz extended their lead to nine with a lineup that included all reserves, including Chris Johnson, Ingles, Raul Neto, Shelvin Mack and Jeff Withey. The Suns also had mostly reserves playing the fourth quarter, although coach Earl Watson inserted starter Booker in down the stretch before Booker fouled out.

that line-up looked good. If CJ can hit the 3 he'd be tough to cut. Will be anyway

Get a rebound, drive coast-to-coast, outrun the defense, eurostep to the left, and go back with to the floater with the right hand falling away from the basket. Lyles turns the corner tightly after the board and then out-runs the defense. That finish, moving away from the hoop laterally while shooting with the opposite hand, is super difficult.

Was out of control on that play. He is looking good though. How much he defends will dictate his minutes

Last season, about 45 percent of Hayward's field goals were assisted. That number puts him in the middle of the pack among the league's top 25 scorers from a year ago, but at the low end among the forwards in that category.
I'm sure it was a lot better with Mack and Hill isn't the playmaker he is.

Fav was hurt at the end of last year and we're still trying to get him completely healthy

wtf is wrong with him now?

That confidence in his shot is also carrying over to live game action, where Gobert took a pull-up jumper in Wednesday's game. That shot went incredibly poorly ("It's not in my repertoire yet, the pull-up. That was a bad idea. I almost broke the backboard," Gobert said), but he says he will take catch-and-shoot opportunities this year if he's left open inside.

"If I get the ball, and I'm inside the 3-point line, and I don't need to dribble, I can shoot it. If I need to dribble, it's better that I do a hand off, and the guy coming off of it is going to be open."

:wtf:

Defensively, he's still making an impact on the game, and Snyder says that so long as he's "working his tail off" defensively, he'll get minutes to learn on the offensive end.

so how do you get the connectivity if you play guys that don't do it at both ends? :confusedshrug:

Dante Exum was held out of the second half of Wednesday's game but fully participated in Friday's practice. It sounds like he'll be fine to play Monday barring any setbacks. Rodney Hood sat out all of Wednesday's game, but also participated in practice.

The signing of Joe Johnson means that he'll likely move into the starting lineup alongside Rodney Hood while Hayward sits.

I'd be thinking Mack with some combo of Exum, Hill, and Ingles. Leave Johnson on the bench where he will be when Hayward gets back. Play him more

Dennis Lindsey spoke on team-owned radio station 1280 AM about the injury. "We won't associate a timeline for a while because there's a couple different potential outcomes," Lindsey said. "The last few pieces of info I've received from our training staff have been optimistic."

sounds like it could be less. Non shooting hand. He's tough! :applause:

The most immediate change to Quin Snyder's club brought about by Hayward's injury will be at small forward, where Hayward has started the last 233 regular season games.

no he has not! :wtf:

Combining Hayward's expected absence with the ongoing rehab of backup shooting guard Alec Burks, Utah is once again quite thin on the wing.

Last season, when Gordon Hayward sat out a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers due to injury, Rodney Hood gave a glimpse of what he could be as the Utah Jazz's number one option.

Too bad like Hayward he's so streaky. Favors has to be the go to guy now assuming he's going to play again himself

But with Utah's best player on the shelf due to a broken finger, Hood is the best candidate for the Jazz to step into Hayward's shoes.

And putting him in the lineup, or even Joe Ingles, allows Hood to stay at his natural shooting guard spot, where he enjoys a size advantage on most nights.

He's usually taller. Not longer which is what really matters. To me he's a bench player until I see otherwise

Should Snyder want to go another avenue, he can start Dante Exum at shooting guard and move Hood to small forward. This move accomplishes a few things with Snyder's rotation. Exum and George Hill create a very good defensive backcourt. It enables Snyder to keep Johnson in his sixth-man role, which is where the Jazz ideally want the veteran. It keeps Johnson with Trey Lyles and Boris Diaw in a potentially potent second unit. It also allows Snyder to give Shelvin Mack significant minutes as the backup point guard, important because Mack has played very well thus far in the preseason.

Mack has played well since they got him. To me he's the 3rd starter. Who you play with him, Favors and Rudy is to be determined. I'd probably leave Johnson on the bench though. Ideally Hill and Exum if they prove it but Ingles could make sense too.

Utah's starting point guard, Hill has experience leading an offense without a star player. He averaged a career-high 16.1 points a night two years ago in Indiana when Pacers forward Paul George was out with a broken leg.

The first is that Rudy Gobert missed 21 games last season. The Jazz went 7-14 in those games. They went 33-28 when he played and 33-27 when he started. That's the record of a 45-win team.

someone gets it! Too bad the local scribes still don't. Not sure how you could have been watching the past couple years and continue to go on and on about everyone but Rudy.

We all know how vital the point guard position is in today's NBA. Gods bless them, but Raul Neto and Shelvin Mack combined to start 80 games at point guard for Utah last year, and Trey Burke was the other lead guard on the roster. This year, the team will have the solid George Hill and exciting Dante Exum in the mix.

well maybe not. I'd dare say Mack is the 2nd most important guy on the team right now with Favors and Hayward out and the new guys still adusting.

Exum's still struggling offensively. He was only 1-5 tonight from the field in 22 minutes, and still gets into the paint and jumps before really having a safe outlet for the ball. But his defense will keep him on the court, and maybe even get him critical minutes like the ones he played in tonight.

but should it? They talk about being connected at both ends and you're going to play guys that do it at one end?

Chris Johnson picked up seven rebounds in his 12 minutes on the court from the wing position

Going to be tough to get rid of him. He was all over the court. Maybe they trade Neto? I don't really see that with Hill and Mack both free agents though.

Diaw's game was up-and-down. You can see what he contributes on the offensive end with spacing and smarts, but on defense, he was definitely bested by Blake Griffin, especially in the post. Griffin's a great post player, so that's not really a surprise, and you'd hope that Diaw wouldn't be guarding Griffin more more than short stints when Favors is healthy. Trey Lyles is probably a better player at this point

I think Lyles is getting overrated. He can shoot. He nees to improve a lot elsewhere.

Some of the in-game team and player ratings leave something to be desired, but this simulation was particularly harsh. The result for the Jazz was a 24-58 record and a last-place finish in the Western Conference.

Not only that, but the team actually fired Quin Snyder at the end of the year and replaced him Dave Joerger (who was fired by the Sacramento Kings in the game).

From the comments section

My line of reasoning for trading Shelvin Mack is as follows.

1. Shelvin Mack will cost the Jazz $2.4 million this season versus Neto's $1 million. The third string point is going to be lucky to average 8 to 10 minutes of playing time per game. So why pay more than you have to? Had the Jazz not traded for George Hill then keeping Shelvin Mack would have been a given.
Until he's not one of their best players I can't see trading him unless you are geting someone back that's comparable. I can see it if you think you won't be able to sign him next year and even than Hill is also a free agent. Mack and Hill leave you are down to Exum and Neto which might be good but who knows right now?

2. The Jazz can get more for Mack in a trade. While I believe Shelvin is the better player (at this point in time) he's not as good a fit for their style of play.

Might get more for Neto actually. He's younger. How is he not a fit? He seems to get it more than about anyone? :facepalm

3. Neto doesn't make very many mistakes and plays within the rules the Jazz have laid down for him. My opinion is the Jazz like the kid a lot and want to keep developing him.

I don't. He's not long enough for them. The fact that he can play means nothing because he doesn't have Exum and Hill's length regardless if he is actually better than Exum.

As for my second paragraph, the Jazz like Quincy Ford and I believe they want to keep him. If they don't open up a slot for him on the Jazz and he plays for the Stars, any other team in the league can call him up and sign him to an NBA contract because the Jazz never held his draft rights. That gives the Jazz an additional impetus to make a move and trade someone (Shelvin Mack).

I doubt anyone's jumping on Ford til he shows something. CJ is the guy you want to open a spot for if anyone.

Mack finished the game with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting in just 17 minutes of play. He also pulled down four rebounds and added a pair of steals. But aside from just putting up impressive stats, what really stands out is the aggressive way Mack has been scoring throughout the preseason. He has relentlessly attacked the rim and continues to convert on tough finishes.

He was actually off last game compared to the first two until he played against their scrubs.

Of all the injuries, Jazz coach Quin Snyder said Hood's is by far the most precautionary. But tonight against Phoenix, the Jazz will be missing three of their top four players, and four of arguably their top seven.

It's arguable rather Hood is in their top 7. He's getting way overrated!

"Rodney's the most precautionary, in that he keeps jamming that finger. It started in the summer, and it could happen again. It might be something he pays through in January, but maybe not," Snyder said. "You've jammed a finger before: first you think it's broken, and then it feels better, and then it turns purple the next day and then you've got to figure out how much better it is and how quickly it gets better."

sounds like he might be injury prone like I feared after his rookie year. The other game he missed was something else.

It may take us a while to find that, and we might start taking and making more threes before that. But also, without Gordon, without Rodney, without Alec, we're finding out who wants to take them. I would anticipate that going up.

Alec doesn't like taking them. Maybe that will change after the injuries?

"We think he can be more than just a shooter," Snyder said. "Sometimes, when we think of just a pure stretch four, we kind of excuse them on the defensive end. He knows he doesn't get that pass. I've been pleased with how he's guarded. He's worked at it."

I expect more. He can shoot. Got a lot to prove still elsewhere.

"Most of his offseason preparation has been playing, and I think recently, he's been more focused on his immediate skill development, and I think he's gaining more confidence in himself. Look at the free throws, for instance."

I've thought once he gains the confidence at that end he'd start improving and it's looked that way so far.

"I think we saw his ability to defend the ball (in his rookie season)," Snyder said. "Now you're seeing with size, he's equally capable of defending other positions on the floor. He can guard one through three."

Good to hear. If he can hit the 3 he's at least a 3 and D guy until he improves the rest of his game.

Most importantly, Dante Exum seems to be not only completely healthy, but further along in his development than anyone could have imagined.

everyone has been hyping how his return makes them so much better. How is his development beyond what anyone could have imagined when to me he still is arguably not one of their top 10 players? :wtf:

The jury is still out on his offense. He's showing some good signs but until he can do things consistently they shouldn't be losing games to put him on the court as they have the past 2 years.

Hard for me to not see Mack in the rotation and unless he's playing with Neto he is the pg and even with Neto he probably is because Neto is better at spotting up.
If you're talking about Exum's offense, I agree. Hill has actually established himself as able to score at the NBA level whereas Exum has a summer league (last year) and the preseason to show us what he's made of so far. We'll know by December though if he can actually do work on offense (or defense for that matter).

It makes a lot of sense except it makes Bolomoboy your 5th big which in reality he is I think but ideally he's in the D-league not sitting on the bench with the Jazz. Keep Sims. Trade Withey. He has to have value.

I suppose one could argue that perhaps his insertion into the rotation might have spared the Jazz that awful loss, but I find that hard to believe.

The fourth-year center attributes his success to his offseason regimen that simply included playing a lot of basketball. And as always, Gobert is playing the game with a sizable chip on his shoulders.

The Clippers, though, lost probably their second best bench player in Cole Aldrich this offseason, while the Jazz reloaded with George Hill, Joe Johnson, and Boris Diaw.

Clippers look a lot deeper.

The Jazz's point guard situation, one of the worst in the league last year, might be one of the best in the league this season.

Not sure either is true. The constant put downs of Neto and Mack are old. Even Burke was solid last year though a bad fit an unproven as an NBA talent still.

Exum talked earlier today about the fatigue he's experiencing for spurts
always looks fatigued

Shelvin Mack's on hyper drive right now. He scored 14 points in 16 minutes and threw three assists to boot. He's being super aggressive, and I wonder if that's because of his new competition in Hill and Exum: he wants to earn minutes.

looks like the same player to me. He earned his minutes with last year's play as far as I'm concerned. He's looked like their 2nd best player.

Neto played well, too, though was sometimes too wild with his shot selection. His three steals helped the Jazz. He'll continue to be a role-player pest defensively, in the Pablo Prigioni mold.

They got to look to make a move if the right deal is out there. The roster is unbalanced and with 3 wings out CJ is hard to cut.

We'll see if he continues his great play against Portland Wednesday, always his toughest matchup throughout his career.

Mack's been very aggressive in preseason, using 25 percent of Jazz possessions when he's on the floor. He's clearly trying to earn minutes out there by going hard in his limited time, and it's working.

looks like the same guy I saw last year that for some reason everyone has written off

"It was fun! More than anything, just getting the chance to know him. He came to the team a little late in the year, and we didn't really get a chance to know each other or spend time with each other, other than on the basketball court," Hood said. "We went to TopGolf together, met each other's families, all that type of thing. It makes us closer on the court. He's a great guy."

should be a good thing. Hood didn't play as well with Mack as he did without him.

This is silly. I know, it's preseason. I realize that the Jazz's TV contract with ROOT doesn't mandate that they televise all preseason games, and I further realize that many teams broadcast fewer of their preseason games than the Jazz do. But that there are professional sporting events featuring Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum and Rudy Gobert and Rodney Hood and Dante Exum and so on and so forth that aren't televised in the year 2016 is absurd.

I remember the days when there were about 20 road games on all year. I grew up listening to Hot Rod on the radio.

The cut candidates are Raul Neto, Chris Johnson, Jeff Withey, and Henry Sims. Shelvin Mack has clearly made his way onto the roster, as head coach Quin Snyder trusts him in a number of different roles.

With Favors and Hayward out he looks like their 2nd best player. Have you actually been paying attention since last February? :facepalm

On the other hand, the other three PGs can all credibly play the two, so maybe a role for Neto can be found.

If Burks, Hayward and Favors are out he should be in the rotation.

Withey's contract is fully non-guaranteed, and was pretty good for the Jazz in limited minutes last season

he was great. Only thing that held him back was their supposedly genius coach

I'd keep Withey pretty easily.

I could see them keeping Sims. I still think some team has to value Withey. If he's cut he'll be picked up off waivers. I'd think they could get something for him though.

"Everything we've seen from (the back of the bench) has been very good, and we have guys who are NBA players," Snyder said. "That makes it harder. For those players, they've been able to show they belong in this league."

Forward Derrick Favors' troubles with Iliotibial Band Syndrome continue to keep the big man sidelined for the Jazz. Burks was effective coming off the bench last year, and could fill the same role this year if Rodney Hood starts at the shooting guard position for Quin Snyder.

Diaw joined the Jazz after Utah sent a 2022 second-round draft pick, cash and Olivier Hanlan to San Antonio for Diaw.

Favors missed games 28-43 (16 games) with a sore back, partly due to sleeping on his stomach. In those 16 games, the Jazz lost nine (with wins coming over the 76ers, Lakers, Grizzlies, and Heat), underscoring how important Favors is to the Jazz.

How many of those were without Rudy too though? With Rudy they compete every night. Without Favors they will compete.

Last year, his injuries sidelined him for an extended stretch and the Jazz struggled during those games.

when Rudy was out as well

No GM can plan for injuries. In life and basketball

sure he can and he has. Too bad he didn't do it last year. They should be competing at a high level with this roster as long as Rudy is playing. Without him I wouldn't be as confident but we'll see.

You never know. If the Jazz aren't playing well and they think they will lose him...

Not sure what rebranding entails but most guys should start in the D-leauge and have to earn a spot in the NBA. The league will be a lot better for it. I think we're headed in that direction though way too slowly.
Egos will play a big part in that idea struggling to get off the ground.

Qs Quote:
Utah is a popular "dark-horse" pick, thus shedding that title, while Portland has high ambitions led by Lillard and his chase for an MVP award. A great early match-up between two of the sides expected to fight for the fourth seed and a potential first round preview. No Hayward will be tough for Utah, but they do have the depth to fight through.

Q's Prediction:
Blazers Win 103-95

Oh certainly. The perception of the D-league has been changing though.
