Like NBA players , people retire in all kinds of ways.
I had worked for 2 insurance companies , a womans cloths company and a publishing company= 38 years in Network tech.
I informed my boss and HR and walked out , like I walked in , unannounced.

I work for myself at the moment. Considering what I'm like as a person I'm sure I will somehow manage to make it an awkward exchange.

I know several guys at my age that have worked as an independent.
They are still working , not by choice , but by necessity = MAKE SURE YOU FILL THE PIGGY BANK FOR RETIREMENT(.)

huge problem for the self-employed. yes, initially you may earn more working independently, however, it is completely up to you to plan financially for your retirement, which many don't unfortunately.

Buy land and get steady rent...
I know people who do this in a smart way and make maybe 1/2-1/3 of their salary while working during retirement and simply collect rent.
Good real estate investment can make retiring very comfortable but of course if you take a huge real estate risk and it doesn't pay off, it could backfire big time.
I've seen people work in tech, make a bucket load off a sale of their company (based on shares they had etc). Take some time off, do the same thing again. Some of them I've seen still work a lot despite the fact they could have retired in their 40s if they wanted to (and very comfortably).
During the Dot com boom, there are a few people I've heard of (never met them but they're like living legends) who made $$$$$ off of computers back in the 90s/early 2000s from acquisitions from bigger companies and live like kings now.
