one of the greatest acts of chivalry i've ever heard about.
here's the story:
one time, during the heat of WWII, a fleet of american bombers and fighters flew off to bomb the crap out of bremen, germany, where major factories were producing some kickass fighter planes which were putting a serious crimp in the allied war effort. (shot of the factory here (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ec/2f/aa/ec2faa72daf3da225994f7488a6e5e4a.jpg))
part of the attack was USAF commander-lieutenant charles brown's B-17 bomber plane. (i mean this man (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/de/19/f4/de19f4b7a726bf7bea8b7f6ca72e9383.jpg))
unfortunately for him and his crew, their plane got ripped up by enemy fire just as it was beginning its bombing run. in just a few moments, german counterfire turned the plane in to this:

every member of the crew had been hit by fire, and the craft was barely staying in the air. so needles to say, it turned around and tried to limp home and cross fingers... basically locking-lips with death, because WTF else is there to do?
and then this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Brown_and_Franz_Stigler_incident) happened.
tl:dr, one time a crazy german dude decided to save many lives because it's dishonorable to kill defenseless people.
EPILOGUE: apparently these two old gentlemen became great friends after the war. also, they both passed away almost the same time, just a few years ago:
