I'm happy for JR. This number is right around where I was figuring. The hold-up was always the fourth year and, from what I understand, it may or may not be completely guaranteed. We'll see how the structure of the deal looks in the coming days.

But, he has earned this kind of payday. And I'm cautiously optimistic that his troubled past when it came to "getting too comfortable" while being under contract long-term will no longer be an issue.

This was always the inevitability and I was never remotely concerned he would sign elsewhere.

Dan Gilbert spares no expense. Had there been a market that demanded he pay more, Gilbert would have signed whatever check he needed to in order to bring JR back.

Regarding my post above, Brian Windhorst suggests that the 4th year of the contract is not guaranteed. The Cavs have the option of waiving Smith after the Year 3 to avoid the deal becoming fully guaranteed.

Great deal for the Cavs. They get a happy, comfortable JR on by far the biggest deal of his career ... but not too comfortable. And, should he completely fall off the cliff at 33 years old, they have an out.

Good stuff, Cavs. Something tells me this deal could have been had in July.

The fourth season of the contract is not fully guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Brian Windhorst, at which point Smith will be 34. But sources say Smith's final season will become fully guaranteed unless the Cavs waive him shortly after the 2018-19 season.
