View Full Version : Kawhi Leonard is a legit superstar in this league

And on par with Kevin Durant. Which means he is arguably the 2nd best player in the league. Who are the other 2nd best players in the league? Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant.
Never thought Leonard would be this good. Thought he would maybe average like 20 ppg once or twice in his career but he has legitimately become a superstar. The guy is unbelieveable.

He hasn't proven himself to be on Durant's level. Let's at least wait ONE ENTIRE SEASON KTHX.

CP3's numbers may not be as gaudy as those others, but his impact is just as big if not bigger than some of theirs. He should certainly be mentioned with them all if nothing else.
Kawhi Not?

He definitely is a superstar but I wouldn't put him above KD just yet. Need to put in more work.

Well, he's the best defensive player in the league bar none. The question is how much offensive production does he need to have to be a Superstar? I'd say what he did last year puts him in that category right now. He's not on KD's level offensively, and probably never will be.

:biggums: He did something Kevin Durant will never do. Which is beat LeBron in the final and win FMVP over him. :confusedshrug:

KD's not on Kawhi's level defensively if you want to play that card.
The gap between them offensively is not that wide. The only thing I can see Durant have over him is the three point shot. Kawhi's midrange game is better and post up game as well. Offensively give me Kawhi when the game is tight and physical. Durant is a softy.
On the other end, the gap between them defensively is huge. Kawhi is 10 times the defender Durant is or ever will be.

Play what card? I said right there in the post you quoted that Kawhi is the best defensive player in the league.
Kevin Durant 27.4
Kawhi Leonard 14.4
^^^Those are their ppg for their careers. KD has 4, count em 4 scoring titles. He's a beast of an offensive player. Kawhi can get there, but he's not there now.

Yea, lol at careers. I like the dude, he might be the best 2 way player in the league right now. There are still others better than him offensively, even though he seems to be closing the gap. KD is one of those players.

The defensive difference certainly makes the gap closer.
The term "superstar" has a connotation that involves entertainment and ratings value in my opinion. Its not exclusively a basketball skills definition. In that respect, Durant wins handily. He's more popular for sure. Arguably more "entertaining", by a casual fans measure
Having said that, in terms of impact, Kawhi at 25 years old has progressed very well and is arguably the best two-way player in the game (Davis is up there, Lebron, etc). His offensive repertoirete is fundamentally sound and impressive. Strong player, def not a pushover.
If it makes it easier, compare Kawhi Leonard to Carmelo Anthony on his best day. Suddenly offense potency becomes less desirable because Kawhi is such a good defender and rebounder while Melo can light it up, 40+ points and such, but bit of a black hole. Melo is no Durant but neither is the defender Kawhi is

imo playoff lebron is still the best 2 way player in the game by some distance. no shame for kwahi, lebron is just lebron tbh.
also I think davis needs a bit more time to mature as he has a BAD situation in new orleans and bigs also mature their game at a slower pace.
3p chucker beta fans (harden stans, curry stans) will never understand what kwahi brings to the table because they are too dumb tbh. Kwahi is a bad man :applause:

I am definitely not a durant fan but kwahi is just under durant in value. durant is such a talented player, too bad he is a raging soft BETA and doesn't use that talent when it matters. durant's game also guarantees good stats but it also hides his least impactful games (stagnated offense, bad defense, no leadership, no playmaking).

Durant is one of the best offensive options the league has ever seen.
KL is great overall and I'd probably take him over Durant for most teams in the league but he's not ever going to reach Durant's shooting and scoring ability.

You also have to factor in Durant's durability issues. Leonard, meanwhile, very rarely misses a game.

Someone doesn't know what they're typing about. Leonard was the 3rd best 3-point shooter last year at 44% from beyond the arc (better than Durant) and also one of the best mid-range shooters. He actually shot the ball better and on more attempts than Larry Legend from 3-point land and he's considered one of the GOAT shooters in NBA history.
I won't get into his scoring arsenal, but be aware that it's quite large and spectacular. He can basically score from anywhere on the floor from post-ups to fades to step backs, he does it all. The only question was that of volume, but at 28 PPG so far this season he's showing that he just needed the green light for that to come to fruition.

 The overrating of Leonard is starting to get annoying.
Kawhi is a superstar defensively with above average offense. Great shooter.
However, last playoffs showed that he wasn't ready yet to lead an elite offense deep into the post season. Maybe this year he is.
But there is NO WAY IN HELL he will ever be Durants level offensively. Durant has GOAT scoring potential and on his worst seasons drops 27 PPG with ease.

You know I like Leonard a lot, but get back to me when he has seasons averaging...
30,28,28,32,26,28 PPG
has a career average of 27.5 PPG
or playoff runs averaging
25,29,29,31,30,28 PPG
which equals 29 PPG career in the playoffs
Durant is just on another level.
Leonard will have seasons of 23-26 PPG IMO, which is still great.

3 games into the season? Westbrooks averaging 39\12\12.....
FMVP? He averaged 14\7\2 in that post-season and 18PPG in the finals. Only won it because the big 3 aged and there was no stand out all-star on that team.
Durant averaged 31 PPG on 55% from the field in the finals.

It would make sense, Kawhi's midrange game is actually strikingly similar to Kobe's, especially in terms of arsenal. Dude has it all; the one dribble pull-up, two dribble pull-up, stepback, fadeaway, turnaround in the post after getting to his spot...
I love watching Kawhi's offensive game continue to develop. Anyone who thinks he's "boring" just doesn't appreciate basketball. He's a joy to watch on both ends of the court.
