FBI investigations are not supposed to be public for the simple reason the investigation could find you 100% innocent.

The only reason we knew about this one as it was happening was because the person was running for president and details were leaked to the press. You may have noticed that none of the other people on these NONSECURE email chains like the diplomats or career State folks or the folks from the White House, NSC, CIA, etc have been discussed as being in legal jeopardy. They would have been facing the exact same charge of mishandling classified info since they created these emails on NONSECURE systems and sent them. The Initial Sender would be in the most jeopardy.



As for the FBI indictment is when the case should become public.

Before that you have an investigation. You need to come up with enough solid evidence to take to a grand jury. You need to convince the grand jury to return an indictment. Grand jury proceedings are secret for a very, very, very good reason.

The targets of grand jury are not even supposed to know a grand jury is looking into them.

This case is not the norm in many, many ways.
