Hill isn't signing on for $15 million per year. (Even then, the Jazz would be hard-pressed to evade the tax.) Goran Dragic, Lowry and Paul are the only players who clear 17 points per game while rivaling his assist (23.2) and three-point (41.2) percentages.

While he isn't a prototypical superstar, Hill's next deal, whoever it's from, is going to pay him like one.

Outside Team to Watch: Denver Nuggets

I don't see him going to the Nets for more money. He will take less money to be on one of the top teams. The Nuggets could make some sense. They are close to where the Jazz were a year ago

As the Jazz spend elsewhere, presumably on Hayward and Hill, don't be surprised if Ingles' offer sheets creep into mid-eight figures per year.
See ya! Would suck to see him go the Rockets but if they want to spend 15 million a year on him go for it!

Here are the Top 3 small forwards (as I see it) that will be available and the good, the bad and the ugly that each option brings to the table.

Probably better to try to replace him with multiple players than just one. Despite the hype the Jazz were not deep which we saw against GS especially. Put a better overall team around Rudy.

Rudy Gay (Opt-out)

How does he fit other than as a possible bench piece?

You know as well as anybody, the biggest question facing the Jazz, other than the retention of Gordon Hayward, is this: Who's going to play point guard next season?

There are a lot of layers here, with your own status among them.

Better not be Dante is all I can say!

Or do they let him go and sign some fancy-passing dude out of Serbia who can run the team but not play much defense?

He'll be a back-up if anything

But you got to understand, the Jazz, especially if they keep Hayward, are far past the days of patience and tolerance and nannying young players. They need results, not any kind of Romper Room, particularly at such an important position.

It should have been that way all along. That's why you have guys like Hood and Exum that think they are a lot better than they really are. Make guys prove themselves and work for it like Bolomboy is

Jeff Van Gundy recently said that he sees nothing preventing the Warriors from making it to eight to ten straight NBA Finals and as preposterous as that might sound on the surface, if this roster is able to stay together without the financial screws falling off, it very well could be the case.

Be tough to do. regardless. What are the chances that they stay healthy? Durant got hurt this year. Don't get bored? Too cocky? Kobe and Shaq should have won for years but egos got the best of them eventually. The game changes. Maybe the league will start playing big like the Jazz again and GS has to try to adapt? I think if the Jazz are really going to spend money and can get say Millsap and Hill they could make it interesting next season.

Jawun Evans is undersized. In today’s NBA point guards are commonly in the 6’3”-6’4” range. Evans is just under 6’0” in shoes. No matter how tough Evans plays defense he will almost always be giving up size to the man he’s guarding. Opposing players will be able to shoot over him whether he’s guarding his man or switched onto an ever bigger player.

Need to tell us his length before you say that. Height really means litle

Point guard is the largest area of emphasis for the Jazz this summer. Evans won’t be a plug and play starter, at least not as a rookie. Utah only has two point guards on the books at the moment but they’d be happy to re-sign George Hill and Quin Snyder’s love for Shelvin Mack can’t be expunged by something as trivial as unrestricted free agency. PLUS the Jazz are rumored to be looking at PG Miloš Teodosić from overseas. All things considered it doesn’t seem that there would be space available for Evans in the upcoming roster if Dennis Lindsey has his way.

You already have Neto, Exum and Wallace though the latter two could play on the wing with their length. I'd say after center they could take about anyone really or no one.

Not draft Jawun Evans because our point guard concerns can’t be addressed late in the first round of the draft.

Don't think any need can other than filling out the Stars roster

the Detroit Pistons are open to trading their 12th pick in the NBA Draft, preferably for a veteran that could make an instant impact. This happens to sound absolutely identical to what the Utah Jazz did last season when they turned their very own 12th pick into George Hill.

Except the Jazz had cap space to take Hill

[QUOTE]If Utah were interested in that pick, they have some veterans that could perhaps fit the ticket such as Alec Burks, Derrick Favors or Rodney Hood, who is young but comes on a very friendly contract. In reality, though, I suspect that Utah won

Now many within Jazz Nation have been desiring to sign Deron Williams or Milos Teodosic and turn the keys over to Dante Exum, or go for the big fish like Chris Paul or Kyle Lowry in free agency.

Those guys as back-ups makes sense nothing else does. I'd be happy if Exum could defend and hit an open 3. He could start at the 2. If doesn't do those things he needs to be traded before he becomes a free agent

they could also be used to sweeten the pot in a trade that sends someone like Alec Burks out the door for the Jazz while alleviating themselves of his cumbersome salary.

He was great here. It's too bad that in typical Jazz fashion they let him go because they were cheap and replaced him with Harpring. Harpring was good too but they could have still been really good with both of them instead of just one.

If you look at my two years in Utah, I shot 50 percent from the floor. You know, even though John was the guy there, I was the second leading scorer on the team.

He was their best low post scorer while Karl shot his fade away 20 footers. Funny he became known for shooting the 3 after he left.

there may be some lingering resentment from Hayward's restricted free agency, when the Jazz decided to wait for another team (the Charlotte Hornets) to offer him the max before matching rather than giving it to him out of the gate.

Dennis Lindsey can also take a risky route inside the league’s current pool, with Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo becoming available.

Why even mention them? They don't fit at all. If Sloan was coach and he wasn't a head case than yes maybe Rondo

The most likely option will be the internal route, or the development of Dante Exum, whom the Jazz picked fifth overall in 2015.

I can't see that. They have to look to find a vet to pair with Neto if Hill goes elsewhere. The Euro is a bench player as is Deron. If Exum could hit shots and defend he could play somewhere. Big ifs

was never really a part of Snyder’s rotation.

sure he was

Favors can neither defend most power forwards (now called “stretch fours” for their ability to shoot threes) nor hit shots from the perimeter himself.

I thought he could defend?

Teams will still have interest in Favors, especially those that could use him as a sixth man, like the Milwaukee Bucks did with Greg Monroe and the Oklahoma City Thunder with Enes Kanter. His scoring and rebounding can be valuable, and Favors can fortify a second unit and serve as a part-time starter when injuries occur.

Jazz might as well keep him if he's a bench piece. He can defend unlike those two. He can play small ball center in the East at least if he gets healthy again

The Los Angeles Lakers own the second pick in this year’s draft and are reportedly looking to trade Jordan Clarkson to make room for Lonzo Ball, who’s projected to get picked at the spot.

Clarkson, 24, averaged 14.7 points on a career-high 44.5 percent shooting last season. The Jazz could theoretically send Favors and his expiring deal to the Lakers with one of their picks for Clarkson, as their salaries match and would fit into the league’s guidelines for acceptable deals.

In return, the Jazz would get a scoring guard under contract until 2020 and the Lakers would get a productive big man in Favors (along with salary cap relief next season) and an additional draft pick. This type of trade is conceivably one the Jazz could complete in the next few weeks.

Clarkson makes sense offensively but the Lakers are already paying Mosgov and have young guys they want to play ahead of him. Can't see them wanting Favors

Hood and Exum both have the potential to become highly productive players, but neither has shown it consistently enough. But if the Jazz brass want to bet on their own talent, they could sign Hood and Exum to early extensions and look bright for doing so if the players realize their potential in the future. Their value is a lot lower now than it will be next year if both have breakout seasons. It could be a financially savvy move or one that becomes burdensome soon after the deals are signed.

Doubt either sign unless they sign very cheaply

The most obvious improvement for Joe Ingles this last season had to be his three point shooting. He lead the league in three point field goal percentage for the majority of the season.

Withey was one of only nine players with a defensive box plus/minus of at least 2.5, a total rebounding percentage north of 16.0 and a true shooting percentage no worse than 58.0 percent during the 2016-17 campaign. He'll never play as many minutes, but he's close to serving as a (very) poor man's version of Gobert, DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard.

I'd take him over Howard. He can certainly be a back-up and start for some teams. Gobert also on that list of 9!

Hill is already 31 years old, so imagining that he'll play at his peak level for another three years already requires some suspension of disbelief. But given his injury history, it's even more likely that a decline is anything other than imminent.

He should play at a higher level than the next two players in this countdown for 2017. But beyond that?

He's only had one serious injury. He needed to rest the toe until it was 100%. I think the Jazz have to rill the dice that he'll be healthy. Not sure there's anyone that fits better

Did you know Gordon Hayward was one of the league's premier alley-oop finishers in 2016-17?

That's a role typically reserved for hulking big men such as DeAndre Jordan or Hassan Whiteside. Long and uber-athletic forwards like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are usually on the receiving end of those feeds as well. Hayward has never fallen into either of those categories.

And yet, he had 22 alley-oop flushes last year, which puts him at No. 21 in the league, per NBA Savant. Just look at how he fared when stacked up against other players who logged the majority of their minutes at either point guard, shooting guard or small forward:

Gordon Hayward, 22
Jimmy Butler, 21
Giannis Antetokounmpo, 15
LeBron James, 13
Andrew Wiggins, 11
Hayward isn't just disarmingly athletic; he also possesses great instincts that allow him to wait for the opportune moments, luring defenders to sleep and then bursting to the hoop with a quick first step.

Ingles deserves a lot of credit. Most came from him. They were shutting it down by the end of the year though once it got on scouting reports

Jonathon Simmons is an off-the-bench weapon for the San Antonio Spurs, playing major minutes in the conference finals and averaging over 15 points per game. Less than two years ago, he was here in Salt Lake City, participating in a Jazz free agent minicamp.

He's not the only one: JaMychal Green, starting power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, made a major impact on a small salary. Four years ago, he also participated in the Jazz's free agent minicamp.

Ouch!!! Both should be on their radar this summer too

On Friday and Saturday, the Jazz are holding their fifth annual free agent minicamp for guys like Simmons, Green, and the 14 other players who have played in the NBA. Two, Toure Murry and Patrick Christopher, played for Utah.

Good for Christopher! He got hurt and lost his spot on the team. Good to see he's back getting another look. Murry sounded like their kind of guy when they got him. Big PG that played D. Maybe he's ready now?

Eleven of the 25 players at the 2017 minicamp have NBA experience. Some have real name value.

good! have end of the roster spots and two way contracts to fill cheaply! Only one Stars player as Wallace works out with the Jazz coaches. Sorry Paige but you got some bad advice from your agent! I'm guessing Ford might be thee because he got hurt and they want a better look at him.

Tyler Hansbrough, maybe better known as "Psycho T" thanks to his time at North Carolina, participated in the workout. He's played in 428 games, starting 50 of them, though he'll be 32 by the time the season starts in October.

Does he shoot the 3 now?

R.J. Hunter was a major target of many Jazz fans in the 2015 NBA Draft and ended up going 28th overall to the Boston Celtics. But faced with a roster crunch, the Celtics cut Hunter at the beginning of the season. He played just three games for the Chicago Bulls before being waived in December.

Going on 24. He was supposed to be a shooter I think

Jarnell Stokes is a former Jazz second-round draft selection, who was then traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for a future pick. Stokes never really stuck after his rookie season in Memphis and has found himself playing for Miami and Denver, but mostly dominating the D-League.

Can he shoot?

"The best case scenario is we find a rotation player for the Jazz," Fredman added. "Dennis (Lindsey) set a high standard for the whole league when he was with San Antonio with Danny Green. He's a legitimate guy who's won championships and started."

what have you done for me lately!

During those five years, 16 camp attendees have gone on to play in the NBA. That's the good news, Jazz Director of Pro Player Personnel David Fredman said.

The bad news? Only two have played for the Jazz.

Some of them might not have fit. Simmons and Green would have

The new rules could make it easier for the Jazz to find that player. Two-way contracts will take affect for the first time next season. That essentially gives the Jazz two additional roster spots, which will be used on players spending their time with the Jazz and the Stars.

There are a few stipulations with the two-way contracts. A player receiving one has to have three years or less of NBA experience. That means Hansbrough and Morris, both NBA veterans, wouldn't qualify. They would have to make an NBA roster outright.

And once you sign a two-way contract, you have to make the team after being in the league 45 days. So, you can't be a 16th or 17th man indefinitely. Even so, there will be more room in the NBA next year than in the past. Ten day contracts will still exist, and the the D-League is gathering more steam as a reputable pathway to the league.

That makes free-agent mini-camps more important to teams and players than they have been previously.

The D-league will be a lot better this year I imagine. A lot of guys that would go to Europe will be looking to get on a NBA roster this year and end up in the G-league. If Hansbrough can hit a 3 and defend he could be in the rotation. Bird loved him at one time. You need at least 5 guys at the end of the bench ideally a couple will be in the G-league with the two way contract guys.

The energy's been good so far today, that's the important thing. It's been interesting to watch some of the players transition from college workouts until now. A lot of guys have improved."

You would think they've all improved

the Jazz are now facing a make or break off-season that will determine if they face another rebuild, or ensure deep playoff runs for years to come.

They will still have an all-NBA player. Not another tank!

If Hayward wants to win, then it really comes down to two teams: The Boston Celtics or the Utah Jazz.

We'll see. I could see Miami and especially SA making a lot of sense

If he values winning, then Utah is a perfect situation. The Jazz won 51 games in a tougher conference. He would be able to remain with an organization, coach and players that he has grown accustomed to. The top talent on the Jazz is also much younger than that of the Celtics.

None of that really matters. Against GS it was Hayward and Gobert and no one else basically. So unless they make some other moves and spend some money why would he stay? Boston, Miami and the Spurs will spend money to win titles

Heading into this season it looked like they had finally gotten the rotation set, but injuries to George Hill as well as Dante Exum needing more time to recover from his ACL injury made it a struggle.

When does Dante become a bust and the injury is no longer an excuse?

Dante Exum does not appear ready just yet to take over the reins full-time,

As of the 2018 playoffs, it will have been 10 years since the Jazz won even one game in the West semifinals.

That goal seems modest at the moment. But to make it easily achievable, the Jazz have to keep Gordon Hayward in free agency and they have to defer a playoff meeting with the Warriors until the conference finals.

Dallas getting upset by the 8th seed is what got them to the finals last time they were there

I'll be intrigued about how the Jazz can keep building around him and how internal improvement with the likes of Rodney Hood and Trey Lyles can enable them to make up some ground with Golden State.

Hood isn't going to get a lot better. He needs to be able to stay healthy and understand his role though. Lyles is young enough that there is still hope but he needs to learn to play with others. If he keeps thinking he's his hero Kobe he'll be out of the league and playing China with his old teammate Burke. Bolomboy may have passed him already with possibly more picks on the way ready to take his spot. You have to keep getting better or you'll be out of the league. No mention of Exum. Neto or Wallace? Burks is still young enough to come back and with two years on his contract they need him to. Joe Johnson, Ingles and Diaw certainly aren't the answers though.

The Jazz have to try to put together the best team they can that matches up with GS. At some point GS will falter rather it be because of injuries, egos or boredom and the Jazz need to be ready to pounce like Detroit did against the Lakers which came apart because of Kobe's ego. I've got my doubts if they will. Joe Johnson and Ingles have to go. I doubt they will. It's not the way the Jazz have done things but we'll see if the new front office and coach actually have a clue or not

Utah's power forward spot is in a bit of flux. Derrick Favors is entering the final year of his contract. Boris Diaw's contract is nonguaranteed for next season. Trey Lyles took a significant step back last season. Joe Johnson, for all of his brilliance last year, is still better suited for coming off the bench at this point of his career.

Again no mention of Bolomboy and I can easily see him in the rotation ahead of Lyles possibly even starting once Favors goes. Johnson needs to go. Doesn't match-up with GS

This is my draft day guarantee: some big man who people think should be taken in the teens will be taken in the mid-20s, just because of positional scarcity. Will the Jazz take that sliding big man? I don't see why not: it allows them to get a higher quality player at this slot than they were planning, then allow them to pick among their favorites at 30. For this mock draft, that player is Justin Patton, an athletic center who can explode and finish above the rim vertically, and just enough skill to make you think he can put something together and be a special player. I like him.

The problem with this is that it will probably be someone the Jazz haven't worked out like Kanter, Burke and Exum! Is this guy long? Can he shoot?

Hartenstein is a logical international pick.

He's my guy based on the SLCdunk previews. Be great if they could get him early in the 2nd round instead though

Ojeleye makes the most sense as a potential 3-and-D prospect. The Jazz don't know if he'll be able to play small forward right away, but if he can shoot and defend like he did in college, he might be able to contribute anyway.

Unlikely that anyone will contribute right away. Maybe by the end of the season if they are lucky

At 6-foot-3 with a 6-6 wingspan, Williams-Goss has good size for his position. He's also an improved jump shooter, knocking down 36.8 percent of his 3-point attempts last season.

Not sure that is long enough or that he is a good enough shooter for the Jazz but he can play

I also posted this a couple of weeks ago for you. What can you tell us(me)?
Sobey is a quick guard, attacks the hole hard, but he's only about 6'3, so he might have some issues as a SG at NBA level, it'd just be a question of if his athletic traits are high enough to translate to the better competition. He's only ever been an average shooter for 3, usually going at 30%, but he upped that to 40% this season, he won the MIP award in the NBL this year, but he's never been a heavy minutes guy. Averaged 27 minutes for us this year, but was a real sparkplug at times (scored 15 points in 10 minutes in one game). He's been playing in Greece once our season finished and seemed to be doing OK.

Wright has said Creek is a "Tony Allen type" at NBA level. He's not a huge scorer, even for us in the NBL, but he's probably a bit like Ingles in that he can do a bit of everything on court. Will be a pesky defender and nail the 3 at a decent clip. Wright is a huge fan of his, so if he has any influence, he'd probably be pushing for him to get on the Summer League squad. He's only 6'5 though, so probably debatable if he has the speed/height to go with SG/SF NBA players.

Both were spotted while we had US scouts over to watch Terrence Ferguson play, so they obviously saw something there. Don't think either will be as good as what Ingles or Delly are, but could be decent depth guys to have on a team for cheap.

If mock drafts are on target, the most marquee prospect at Zions Bank Basketball Center was Baylor forward Johnathan Motley, who many project will be taken in the early to mid-second round. Motley was joined by Gonzaga point guard Nigel Williams-Goss, Houston wing Damyean Dotson, North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks, La Salle guard Jordan Price and Southeast Missouri State wing Antonius Cleveland.

Does he select a point guard, not knowing if George Hill leaves in free agency? Does he draft a small forward and put together a contingency plan in the event Gordon Hayward leaves as well in free agency? Or does he trade his pick and secure a veteran before July 1 in an attempt to convince Hayward to stay?

You got to look to improve the team by trading the picks. A draft pick isn't going to help them immediately despite all the talk of immediate help in the draft

it is uncertain if the Jazz want to have four rookies on the roster.

They haven't wanted more than two in the past. The two extra spots could mean 3 or 4 now but considering Exum, Lyles and Bolomboy still have yet to prove themselves I'd say they don't need more than 1 rookie. Need more proven vets

Gordon Hayward never believed his agent's prediction that the phone would start ringing at 12:01 a.m. July 1.

That was three years ago, when some percentage of fans didn't care whether or not the Jazz kept Hayward as a free agent. Many of them thought the team paid too much in matching the offer sheet he signed with Charlotte. How silly does that seem now?

That was before the tv money made him a bargain last year. I certainly didn't think he was worth the full max this summer before he played his best ball in the playoffs. Now you have to pay him whatever he wants and hope it's enough

Even when Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver and Wesley Mathews left via free agency in 2010, everyone sensed the Jazz had maximized what they could do with those guys and Deron Williams after averaging 51.5 wins over four seasons and continually running into the Lakers in the playoffs.

Millsap was better than Boozer so that's easy. I liked Korver but Jerry's love for him hurt the team. Wesley hadn't done anything yet. One of their biggest mistakes was letting him go. Deron they didn't get enough for

The Jazz are ascending after a 51-31 season, although that remains true only if Hayward stays.

Even if he stays they have to improve the roster somehow. He's not staying if they don't. We saw against GS that they have two guys that can play with them.

The Jazz's general manager needs a solution at point guard, and that issue plays into Hayward's situation. The variable is that Hayward hardly could wait until George Hill's future is determined because Hill's free agency will involve some shopping after July 1.

The Jazz should be able to tell them what their plan is for Hill and their plan b. Celtics, Miami etc. will have a plan

Thursday's draft, with the Jazz owning the Nos. 24 and 30 picks in the first round and two more picks in the second round, will give all of us more material for discussion but probably not a lot of clarity regarding what will happen with Hill or Hayward.

I expect the Jazz to finally spend at least some of their cap space before July 1 so we should have a little bit more clarity

Eaton had played sparingly in his two seasons at UCLA, averaging just 1.8 points per game while playing less than seven minutes per game in a reserve role.

Well, all the big fella did was come to Utah and flourish, becoming an awesome rebounder and an intimidating, shot-blocking force inside who was twice named the league's Defensive Player of the Year.

He was not an awesome rebounder. He had one big year rebounding if I remember correctly and he did it mostly on the defensive end which didn't actually fit since Karl did most of his rebounding at that end too. Tag was an awesome offensive rebounder which fit better with Karl. Too bad Sloan didn't care for him

Then, 11 years after selecting Eaton, the Jazz found another player in the 1993 draft, Long Beach State's Bryon Russell, who turned out to be a big part of their most successful seasons ever.

Bobby Hansen? Another Layden favorite that sucked.

Brooklyn had been rumored as a destination for George Hill, though it was never really clear how serious that interest was. Brooklyn, though, undoubtedly would have been the team that had the most cap room to offer Hill a large contract.

"I told him, if he gets a crazy offer somewhere else, and we helped him get that offer, you're not going to get one poor thought, much less word, if he goes elsewhere," Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said about Hill in May. But now, it looks less likely that he'll get that crazy offer.

That, in conjunction with Philadelphia trading for No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz, also a point guard, means that the market for premier point guards like Kyle Lowry and Hill has dried up.

That means it's much more likely that those players stay with their respective teams, who can offer them a contract that goes above the salary cap limit thanks to holding their Bird rights.

He wasn't headed to NJ. Philly I could see. They could be good if they get healthy

the Jazz have a series of mid range contracts, owed to rotation-level players, that could be included in a trade to facilitate a deal.

Boris Diaw has a $7.5 million deal that is fully non-guaranteed, meaning any team that acquires him could waive him immediately and not have to take on his salary this season. Derrick Favors has one year and $12 million remaining on his contract, and when healthy is a starting-level power forward in the league.

Finally, the Jazz have Alec Burks at two years and $22 million that they can trade. Due to Burks' injury history, his deal will be the most cumbersome to move.

Joe Johnson! Did anyone else watch him suck against GS? He has to go! Diaw maybe. I think they could sign him to a cheaper deal. Favors and Burks need to get healthy first

The Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in acquiring the Bulls' Butler but may be unwilling to trade budding star Andrew Wiggins to finalize the deal. Again, enter the Jazz.

The Wolves could acquire Butler in exchange for the Wolves' young players Zach Lavine and Kris Dunn, in addition to the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. However, that package is unlikely to be enough for the Bulls, and once again, the Jazz enter the picture.

Levine looks better than Wiggins. He is coming off knee surgery so I doubt he's too valuable right now anyway

The Jazz could take on the final two contract years of point guard Ricky Rubio from the Wolves

Rubio can't shoot! How does he make any sense at all?

, now filling the void if George Hill leaves as a free agent. The Jazz again send a young player to Chicago to add to the package the Wolves have shipped out and include an expiring contract to free up cap space for the Bulls, or a first-round pick.

In summary, the Bulls acquire a series of young, affordable pieces with potential to be franchise cornerstones, in addition to first-round draft picks. The Wolves land a star in Butler, and the Jazz find their starting point guard for the next several seasons, while shipping out a young player, and either an expiring contract or first-round draft pick.

What magic does Dennis Lindsey, resident wizard, have up his sleeve?

This is old! What has he done other than luck out with Rudy?

I love Derrick Favors and Alec Burks, but right now they appear to be expendable. Both have dealt with nagging injuries the past couples of years, and neither look like they’re a great fit in Quin Snyder’s system. Rodney Hood has regressed as well, but his contract is a team-friendly rookie deal through next season. Hood easily has the best trade value of the three. It’s reasonable to assume that anyone not named Rudy is being considered a trade asset right now.

I wouldn't assume that but that should be the case. I'll be surprised if they trade Joe Johnson and he should be at the top of the list for example. Favors and Burks need to show they are healthy again before trading them

Favors and Burks have combined salaries totaling nearly $23 million in 2017-18. Trading one or both of them to a team for picks or prospects makes a lot of sense. If the Jazz can dump $20~ million in salary in exchange for what would become a cheap rookie contract, and open up more flexibility to potentially sign another impact player (more on this later), that’s probably the right move. It would suck to see either of these guys go, but if Lindsey thinks it’s the right move for the franchise, it’s likely he would make the move.

He was trying to trade Favors at the deadline and the offers weren't good enough. Doubt that changes suddenly. He has value with him being eligible for an extension. If he shows he can still play someone might give quite a bit for him if he agrees to an extension

Operating under the following assumptions: Diaw’s contract is waived; Utah keeps both the 24th and 30th picks; DL trades away Favors and Burks; here are a few free agent possibilities that could work.

I see them doing something by July 1st. They have cap space to burn still and need to impress Hayward. Could see them getting rid of all their picks. With Wallace, Bolomboy, Lyles and Exum still developing I don't think they need more than one rookie to take the other two way contract really.

Is Dennis Lindsey comfortable with Dante Exum stepping in as the starter this season? If he is, then the point guard situation becomes significantly easier to handle.

If he's the wizard you say he is why would he think that. Exum has shown little to think he's the guy. I could see him starting at the 2 if he could hit shots and defend without his hands. Hasn't shown he can

Assuming Lindsey and Quin Snyder are both on board with Exum as a starter

Snyder wasn't on board with Exum as a rotation player much of last year. Now he wants him starting? Very doubtful. The Jazz need a vet to start unless they want to start Neto which I could back a lot more than Exum because he was solid in that role last year. Don't see that happening though. Need a vet. Need Hill!

Patty Mills, Shaun Livingston, and Deron Williams would make for solid backups at around $5-10 million a year, with Mills likely on the higher end of that range. Patty Mills seems to make the most sense from a fit standpoint, if Utah can pry him away from the Spurs.

I could see giving Mills a shot as a starter. Might get him to leave SA but he could be starting there with Parker out. Livingston doesn't fit. Deron ideally is a back-up

If not, the options are Hill, Teague, and Collison. Hill and his agent have already indicated that they expect a max contract, which he is unlikely to get unless he signs with a team like New York or Brooklyn. It’s hard to know what Teague’s market value is, but Collison is likely in the $15-20 million range. That is a possibility if one or both of Burks/Favors contracts are moved.

Collison is a back-up. Teague doesn't fit.

The first group can only realistically be targeted if both Favors and Burks are moved to open up the extra cap space.

Wrong! They are close to signing anyone right now under the cap. Sign Hayward and Hill after that

Millsap can do it all, including some ball handling. He’s the total package.

And yet they let him go so Enes and Favors could play! :rant

If he’s willing to sign at a discount in the $15-20 million range, he’d be a perfect fit in the Jazz system next to Gobert.

Doubt he's giving a discount but I can definitely see him wanting to come back and be on a top 4 team

Ibaka may command too much money, since he’s never really had a big contract and might be ready to cash in at this point in his career.

His last contract was big. He might triple that but it was nothing to sneeze at

Muscala will likely be paid well this summer, so he may be priced out of the range the Jazz will have to work with.

How is priced out and Millsap isn't. Doubt he's getting 20 million a year! :confusedshrug:

The next group of guys might be available in the $8-12 million range, which means the Jazz may be able to hang onto Favors and only need to move Burks in order to make room:

Jonas Jerebko, Amir Johnson, Nene, Spencer Hawes, Omri Casspi, Donatas Motiejunas, Taj Gibson, Danilo Gallinari.

Muscala is getting paid more than Gallinari? 12 million for Gallinari? :facepalm

I could see all those guys except Nene and Gibson. Could we actually pay attention to what the Jazz have done under Lindsey and Snyder before writing these? They let Booker go because they thought Diaw and Lyles could hit 3's. They would have been a lot better off with Booker though! :banghead:

The Jazz could do much worse for a backup big man.

They need a starting 4 unless they move Hayward there which I think may be the way to go. Might have to wait until they move Favors later in the year though? Need a vet to back-up Rudy but again that might have to wait until Favors is dealt later. I can see Bolomboy getting at least back-up minutes at the 4 eventually

Whether it’s because of age, a question of fit with the team, or simply chemistry, these guys could either be nice options as bench guys or could be total disasters. It would be interesting to see DL roll the dice on someone from this group. Gasol, Ian Clark, JJ Redick, Vince Carter

Carter and Gasol make sense. Redick makes none for the amount of money he will get ad certainly doesn't fit as a starter. Clark can shoot but he doesn't have anything else that makes him a great fit here. He looks good shooting wide open 3's in GS

Whatever happens, this summer is set up to be the most interesting free agency in recent memory. Expect Dennis Lindsey to put the Jazz in a position to succeed.

It should have been last summer actually but the wizard failed

From ESPN’s Brian Windhorst: [The Dwight Howard trade] is the Hawks sending a signal that they are going into a full rebuild mode, and it would also imply that Paul Millsap probably will not be back with the organization. – via SLAM
Trade, Dwight Howard, Paul Millsap, Atlanta Hawks

There are three or four teams out there that are willing to give Millsap a max contract, and sources have told me that the Hawks have begun getting some feelers on sign-and-trades. – via SLAM

Teams like the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets are interested in Paul Millsap. – via SLAM

A sign and trade might work even better if the Hawks will take back Joe Johnson and Favors! Hard to believe he would want to go to one of those teams more than the Jazz. He did play with Earl. Kings are a mess. Denver is about where the Jazz were a couple years ago so that one maybe. There's max and there's a 4 year max. Big difference. I could see the Jazz maybe giving him max on a shorter deal anyway at his age. Bring back Paul! Right one of the biggest wrongs the franchise has made!

Conventional wisdom suggests a playoff team may be hesitant to bring five rookies onto a win-now roster. But the advent of the new two-way contracts may test that theory.

As the beat writer and not an intern you should know that under Lindsey they haven't wanted more than 2. Supposedly the reason for stashing Neto though him outplaying the guy they traded for two firsts probably played into that. They only had one last year when they finally added some vets. With Exum, Lyles and Bolomboy all still unproven I can't see more than 2 and that's only because of the two ways. If Hayward leaves and they try to tank again it would only be 3 or 4 rookies at most.

Utah, which has picks 24 and 30 in the first round, is confident in its ability to find capable rotation help, even late in the first round.

To me still thinking you can find immediate help in the draft is a huge problem. They haven't yet under Lindsey! They should assume anyone they draft will at least start the year in the G-league.

we know this is a good draft."

you think it is. Time will tell

Lindsey said the team's needs can't be ignored

That's why they put players into tiers. When they draft if there is a center in that tier they need to get one. After that I'd say wing or combo forward maybe.

That means the Jazz could look at selecting a big man. At power forward, Boris Diaw's contract for next year is non-guaranteed. Derrick Favors is entering the last year of his contract. Jeff Withey will be a free agent, and Trey Lyles didn't play well in his sophomore season. To that end, the Jazz brought in a significant number of power forwards and centers for pre-draft workouts.

No mention of Bolomboy yet again! :wtf:

The Jazz also may need a point guard, with Hill now a free agent, along with Shelvin Mack.

Still have Exum, Neto and Wallace though two of those could play wing as well. Need a vet pg.

And with the Jazz holding $13 million they need to spend before July 1, it would be smart to keep an eye on Lindsey the gambler.

They need to spend at least 3 to get to the minimum. After that you don't necessarily want to take on salary before free agency. If you can make things more attractive for Hayward and Hill you do that though

if the Jazz are successful in trading for a point guard, that doesn't close the door on Utah's effort to retain starting point guard George Hill, who will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Depends on who they get. Beverley I can see with Hill because he doesn't make much. Jazz probably see Hill as a great fit even if he's playing the 2

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/5426504-155/kragthorpe-utah-jazzs-draft-night-is

The night when he boldly acquired a top-10 pick in the NBA draft, Utah Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey also chose Rudy Gobert.

No other snapshot of Jazz history illustrates the uncertainty of picking players quite like Lindsey's first night in charge of the franchise's draft operation in June 2013. He was celebrated for moving up to No. 9 and taking point guard Trey Burke. Lindsey then landed another first-round pick and grabbed Gobert at No. 27 in a move that was treated as an afterthought in comparison to Burke's arrival.

I certainly took note of a notoriously cheap team buying an extra first. Also got Neto late in the 2nd but no one likes Neto despite the fact that he can actually play despite not having the wingspan or being the great athlete everyone seeks

The Jazz's draft strategy is complicated because there's no way of knowing if they will be able to re-sign two valuable players who are free agents: forward Gordon Hayward and point guard George Hill. Whether via trade, the draft or some combination, the Jazz have to impress Hayward about their future or pre-emptively compensate for losing him. Yet if Hayward and Hill stay in Utah, the Jazz will have payroll issues that make guaranteed contracts for two first-round picks a bit unwieldy.

Can trade the picks later. Not complicated really other than maybe having them sit out summer league without a deal which isn't ideal

That's why they're believed to be considering international players such as Latvian center Anzejs Pasecniks and German forward Isaiah Hartenstein, who could remain in Europe for a year or two.

Cool! My guy.

If they package a player with their two first-round picks, the Jazz could move up to about No. 12 and take the likes of Louisville guard Donovan Mitchell or Gonzaga center Zach Collins.

They could? Seems like a big leap to me. Maybe if they use some cap space or other young guys picks they have

BYU's Eric Mika, also a Lone Peak grad, Utah State's Jalen Moore, a Sky View grad, and Weber State's Jeremy Senglin are unlikely to be drafted but should have free-agent opportunities.

Sounds like Mika could be drafted

ESPN.com this week ranked Gobert one of the top players ever taken in his draft slot, although he hasn't matched the exploits of the all-time best 27th pick, Dennis Rodman.

I'd take him over Rodman any day

Lopez was a better fit. Too bad his knees didn't hold up

With their picks at Nos. 14 and 16, the Jazz went with Kris Humphries and Kirk Snyder. The future (and now former) Mr. Kardashian eventually became a solid pro, but was a bad fit in Utah and after proclaiming himself a Rookie of the Year front-runner

Humphries hits 3's now. Might be a fit!

8) Dealing for Curtis Borchardt (2002)

He could have been good too if his body would have held up

7) Trading multiple firsts to select Trey Burke (2013)

Jimmy Butler was linked to the Boston Celtics, who will pursue Gordon Hayward come July 1. Now that Butler is in Minnesota, the Celtics can't add Butler to its team with hopes of convincing Hayward to come too. Bradley, much like Mitchell, went through the pre-draft workout process and impressed the Jazz with his shooting and ability to showcase offensive skills that weren't on display with the Tar Heels.

they must think he's got shooting potential

Although the Jazz aren't shopping him around, veteran power forward Derrick Favors continues to receive a lot of interest from a variety of teams. Utah would like to keep Favors, who has one more year remaining on a four-year deal, but he is not considered off limits like rising star Rudy Gobert.

He'll start the season with them

The Jazz have explored trading for Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio, but there's no real traction on that front for now.

hard to believe they want him really. Can't really play off the ball because he can't shoot

Source on Utah-bound guard Donovan Mitchell: "He's certainly special. Haven't had a playmaker like him in a long time."

Bradley isn't very impressive on film, but his stats jump off the paper once you adjust for the limited number of minutes he played at North Carolina. That means statistical models love him. Kevin Pelton named him as the No. 9 best prospect in this draft, and Andrew Johnson had him as the 6th best prospect. Clearly, the Jazz liked Bradley's size, and hope he can be Rudy Gobert's backup at center in 2017-18.

Sounds like he could be a steal. Let's hope they sign a proven vet to be the back-up though and he's with the Stars

"We had two prospects that we were trying to move up for," Lindsey said, "and Donovan was one of those guys, because of his length, his athleticism and his character."

TJ Leaf?

During Thursday night's NBA draft, the Jazz front office had a piece of paper with a list attributes they were looking for in their picks. The list, which they called the "character crucible" included: toughness, grit, passionate, love of the game, unselfishness, communication ability on and off the court, competitiveness and intelligence.

So I take it this is new in the past couple years?

Mitchell is undersized for shooting guard at 6-foot-3.

Longer than Hayward and Hood!

Cool that he wants to be here!

The only knock against Mitchell is his size, as he's not quite big enough to play shooting guard and not quite the playmaker to be a full-time point guard.

6'10"

I'd guess they'd love him at the one but will settle for him at the 2 and could even play him some at the 3.
