He also teamed with Karl Malone to lead the Jazz back-to-back NBA Finals in ’97 and ’98. If not for some guy rocking No. 23 for the Chicago Bulls, he probably has a ring or two right now.

If he'd been more selfish and Karl wasn't a choker and Jerry hadn't been out coached and it the Jazz weren't cheap...

Honorable mention: Deron Williams, Rickey Green

loved Rickey but he was no Deron

What’s crazy is that he was one of the NBA’s greatest-ever scorers as a six-foot-five, 200-pound post player. In that regard, Dantley just might be the ultimate example of overcoming one’s lack of size.

was said he really only 6'2""!

As was the case with Stockton, there’s no argument to be had here.

as was the case for all the picks thus far

If not for the misdiagnosed injury that essentially ended his career (thanks a bunch, Lakers medical staff!), he more than likely finishes his career as the most prolific scorer in the history of the league.

I think he quit because he went after Kobe's wife . Unlikely he would have been the all-time leading scorer. Was still a few seasons off

Although Mark Eaton is the only player among this five not enshrined at the Basketball Hall of Fame, I say one could legitimately argue that he should be there.

LOL! You never even saw him play correct? He was a stiff

Oh, and about that playoff streak that AD tipped off — Eaton deserves equal credit on that one. His arrival in Utah changed the team.

no he doesn't. AD was the man. They also had Griffith, Green and Thurl

Think I’m crazy?

just stupid. Rudy is the best ever already and it's not even close.

The Jazz will look to Rodney Hood and Gobert to make up some of the scoring load, but it may be too much to ask for Hood to increase his scoring load by 7.3 points to cross the 20-point threshold.

He could but is it good for the team? He's a 6th man. And regardless of how much he scores hes not the player Hayward is.

Gobert would need to add 6 points to his average.

He was averaging over 17 at the end of the season but it will be a lot tougher for him and Favors without shooters spreading the floor

Facing a 12-month rehabilitation plan, having torn his ACL this past February, Parker will have roughly two months, or 30 NBA games, to prove his value.

and the playoffs

Parker has played more than 80 percent of his career minutes at the power forward position. With both Derrick Favors and Joe Johnson in the final years of their contracts with the Jazz, a starting caliber forward will be a priority for the Jazz in 2018.

Everything but a center could be a priority with them though

For the Jazz, who struggle to attract top-tier talent on the free agency market, betting on a cultural and positional fit like Parker, may be worth the gamble.

He's restricted so I wouldn't get my hopes up

The Jazz have terrific depth and will surely have a top-three defense again.

don't count on it. The offense will make it much tougher for the D

But they may never score 100 points this season, because they play slow and seemingly have no go-to guy beyond Joe Johnson for a few minutes a night.

Is Joe playing the 3 or 4? He's not a go to guy. Hood and Burks are more likely at times anyway

Dante Exum (now two years past his torn ACL) just needs to give them something offensively.

and defensively

Entering the 2016-2017 season, there was a thought around the league that Derrick Favors was the best player amongst the trio of Rudy Gobert, Gordon Hayward, and himself. There was a case to be made that Derrick Favors would be the key to Utah making the playoffs last year.

The Utah Jazz made somewhat of a surprising move on draft night when they traded their 30th and 42nd picks to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for the 28th overall pick which they utilized to select UNC product Tony Bradley.

Not really surprising. A young center was obviously their biggest need and they got the one they wanted apparently

Given that Gobert has largely already established himself as a top-tier player and has set an expectation for himself, there’s not necessarily as much intrigue about how Gobert will fare next season.

sure there is because he won't have 4 shooters around him now!

the Jazz gambled on him rather than going the conventional route was certainly a pleasant surprise

He dropped. How did they gamble by taking supposedly the best player on the board?

it didn’t take long for him to establish himself as the starter albeit on a team with a point guard corp that was shaky at best

you mean on a team trying to lose games

According to Dennis Lindsey, Dante Exum looks ready to roll. pic.twitter.com/xtgGFbphE1

we'll see

he proved that his quick first step could help him get to the rim with surprising ease when he looked to be aggressive and attack.

but couldn't finish so who cares

That’s the kind of offense the Jazz are going to need from Exum this season and beyond, not just so that he can be a valuable bench player, but so that he can eventually fill his potential as a star in this league and develop into the caliber of player that the Jazz expect of him.

Hopefully he can hit open shots and defend. All-star? :facepalm

Exum still likely has one of the highest upsides of any player on the team and if he can begin to break into that this season, it will be an incredible sight for the Jazz.

and if he doesn't Kabong will be watching him down under next year

And given that Exum still has so much room for growth, his ability to tap into that potential could very well help the Jazz have a more successful season than many are expecting.

by many you mean the non homers right? The homers think the Jazz are better than last year!

If he can even get back to his former self from the 2015-16 campaign and stay healthy, he could very well regain his spot as one of Utah’s top players.

and they can get a big haul for him!

Rodney Hood is indeed the one who’s most important to the Jazz’s success

They're in big trouble. Expecting way too much out of a 6th man

A recent FanRag Sports piece highlighted Rodney Hood as one of the NBA’s top most improved player candidates for 2017-18 and that’s exactly what he’ll have to be for the Jazz to be able to bounce back next season.

Exum is the guy they need for that award

The Jazz’s success depends largely on whether Hood can make the leap from a 12 to 14 points per game guy to a 18 to 19 points per game kind of guy while maintaining some semblance of efficiency.

He can but it should be off the bench and they will still suck!

David Locke, host of the Locked on Jazz podcast, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and the Jazz NBA Insider, recently released a podcast where he stated that he believes Sefolosha and Ingles will likely split the minutes at the small forward position 50/50.

Sefolosha is a defensive specialist only. Bring the one starter who can shoot off the bench? :coleman:

We need to overcome the notion that being a starter means you are the better player.

exactly. Rodney Hood is a bench player not a go to guy! Could be a great 6th man though

One of the biggest advantages to starting Sefolosha over Ingles, is he can wear down the elite NBA wings before Ingles takes over. In the West alone, we have Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Jimmy Butler. At 6-foot-7, with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, he is better built to handle the top scorers in the NBA.

They'll be resting on the other end though.

This is the main reason why I would like to see Joe Ingles coming off the bench. Our primary backup guards are going to be Donovan Mitchell and Dante Exum.

You hope anyway.

With that being the case, it makes sense to have them paired with a player who knows the system and can spend time handling the point guard duties.

If they can't handle it. Neto, Hood, Burks, Johnson etc. can

While Sefolosha is a respected veteran and a solid rotational player, pairing him with Mitchell and Exum would make our bench worse and would potentially put too large of a role on the shoulders of Mitchell and Exum.

Mitchell and Exum need tobe on the bench if they aren't ready. Simple really

With Sefolosha starting, the projected lineup is Rubio, Rodney Hood, Sefolosha, Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert. The only above-average shooter in the group would be Hood.

Debatable if Hood is above average

The Jazz defense is going to surprise people from the get go and the offense is going to be better than expected. After October the Jazz will be at 5-2.

doubt the D will surprise anyone. Offense will be better than who expects? The people that keep writing these articles think it will be great despite what it says on paper. They better start good with most of them at home and December ready to bury them early

I feel like lots of people are forgetting just how good the rest of this Jazz team was last season.

I think most are forgetting how bad everyone outside Rudy and Hayward looked against GS. They needed to upgrade. They downgraded. Good bye Hayward

With just two seasons under his belt, this season will be critical to see if he can make the jump as a full-time role player.

critical to stay in the league

Exum rotated between second and fourth string last season behind Shelvin Mack and Raul Neto, and with the latter out and no injuries at the moment, the depth chart should be settled to begin the year.

Neto and Burks should be ahead of him at the 1 until he proves otherwise. At wing he's behind even more people

Neto has been a more complete player thus far in their respective careers

However, Ingles has shown that he is best-suited as a utility guy coming off the bench.

He has? He should have been starting all or last year. They finally did it at the end of the year. Hood is the one that has 6th man written all over him not their best shooter and perimeter defender and their 2nd highest paid player.

Swiss journeyman Thabo Sefolosha also made his way to Salt Lake City this summer and could end up in the starting lineup if the Jazz elect to go all-out on the defensive end.

Probably makes more sense than Hood too.

The killer is this year the Jazz play only 3 games against the Mavericks, Kings, Grizzlies, and Lakers. All four teams are projected below the Jazz in the Western Conference.

By who? I would certainly put the Grizzlies ahead of them and it certainly wouldn't surprise me if the Mavs or even Kings were ahead of them in the end

The imbalance in the schedule may very well be the difference between the playoffs and just out of the playoffs.

hard to see anything but the lottery for them

Believing you are good is often a large part of the battle. Can you find a part of the schedule where the team can get hot and believe in itself? It is hard to find an extended stretch of confidence builders when you play in the Western Conference.

This season the best stretch might be the opening of the season. The Jazz open the year playing 10 of their first 14 games at home. After the 4th game of the season the Jazz play just 2 of their next 16 games against team Pelton projected to win 48 or more games. The Jazz opening 21 games only 5 of the games are against teams that project to over 48 wins, 3 in the first 4 games.

Pretty much have to get off to a great start. December will bury them and they will start looking to dump guys

The Jazz 2nd confidence builder stretch happens from March 3rd to March 22nd. The Jazz play 9 of 10 games against teams that are projected to have losing records by Pelton. The New Orleans Pelicans are the only team in this stretch who is projected to win over 35 games.

The Jazz better take advantage of these two stretches because when it is brutal it is seriously brutal.

By March the team will look much different and they will be looking towards the lottery and next season already

From Dec 4th to Dec 30th the Jazz play 14 games and 11 of them are against teams projected by Pelton to win at least 48 games. Two of the exceptions are really good, Dec 9th at Milwaukee and Dec 26th at Denver. The Jazz may only be favored in 1 of 14 games from Dec 4th to the 28th.

goodbye playoff delusions

Unfortunately, the close to the Jazz season will be brutal as well. When some teams are no longer putting out full rosters the Jazz close with 13 games and 10 of them are against teams likely battling for playoff position.

hard to predict how teams will approach the end of the year. The Jazz will certainly be looking for ping pong balls

The key stretch of the season will be how the Jazz are mentally after the brutal end of 2017. From Jan 1st to March 22nd the Jazz play only 7 of 35 games against the top teams in the NBA. You can make the NBA playoffs beating the teams you should.

They have to beat up on the east again. The west will be tough to get victories against

Another tough stretch is the Jazz leave on Jan 4th for a 4 game 8 day road trip. (These used to be shorter but the expanded schedule means more days on the road) then the Jazz come home for one game, go back to Sacramento before home for a home back to back and then leave the next day for a 3 game 6 day road trip. The Jazz will be home for dinner for 3 nights from Jan 4th to the 27th. Then the Jazz play one game for 7 days before going back on the road.

The January stretch is supposed to be against lesser teams but it might be tough because of all the road games

He should have started higher initially, but they recognized that he had talent and at least belonged in the league.

That was still a question I'd say until the start of his 2nd season where I thought he earned the back-up center role. I think he was the 4th big until he emerged as the man in mid-December

With incumbent starter George Hill all but out the door, the Jazz had to act quickly to secure a new starting point guard ahead of free agency. If for no other reason than to aid in their pitch to Gordon Hayward.

He was only out the door because they pushed him out with this head scratching move!

the possibility remained that Hayward would bolt regardless. So the Jazz needed a player who could also be productive and mesh with a roster without Hayward.

doubt they get him if they know Hayward is leaving

Rubio remains a solid replacement for Hill. The move to bring him into the fold is probably one of the sneaky good offseason adds league-wide.

Rubio is also a better match for the current roster in a variety of ways.

Hill was a perfect fit for last years team. Rubio fits if a team that can't shoot is really the goal which seems to be the case for some unknown reason

He and Rudy Gobert could also be deadly in the screen-roll.

Last season, Gobert made nearly 74 percent of his shots and scored 1.38 points per possession as the roll man. Meanwhile, Rubio is in the 70th percentile as the pick-and-roll ball-handler according to Synergy. That’s a one-two punch that should stymie opposing defenses with regularity.

the lack of shooting will hurt it

the big concern is his shooting ability (or lack thereof), which could be a problem for a Jazz squad already lean on shooters/scorers. Nevertheless, he’ll form a unique combination with Gobert on both sides of the ball, while making others around him better with his unique vision.

In particular, Rodney Hood, Joe Ingles and Joe Johnson should benefit as spot-up shooters.

They like to play with the ball in their hands too. Which is why Hill fit and Rubio doesn't.

He also comes on a relatively affordable deal. Just over 14 million annually for the next two seasons is peanuts for a player who’s a borderline All-Star.

boderline all-star! Will the hyperbole ever cease. :coleman:

Losing Hill could have been bad, but the Jazz probably get better at PG in the long-term with the younger Rubio. Even if the Jazz acquired him with Hayward in mind, Rubio is probably a better match for the team that remains on both sides of the ball.

He and Gobert should be one of the Association’s most formidable screen-roll combinations.

GRADE: B+

How is it not an A+ if he's a borderline all-star? They now have Gobert, Favors, Hood and Rubio as all-stars. A big 4 to challenge the champs!

with all the great perimeter defenders the Jazz currently have, their defense is unstoppable when Gobert is at center and ever so slightly less daunting when a healthy Derrick Favors is in the middle

Favors is not close to Rudy!

Not only should he be able to shoot a high percentage around the rim and have success in the pick and roll, he will have a lot more opportunities with the mid-range jumper as well.

Williams-Goss noted that he had an offer to go to training camp with the Jazz, but turned it down for the chance to sign a contract with Partizan. The NBA training camp offer would not have come with a guaranteed roster spot, but instead an opportunity to try to be one of the 15 players who make the squad at the beginning of the year. The Jazz already have 16 guaranteed contracts, so odds would have been slim for Williams-Goss.

In some ways it would be hard to imagine Gobert having a better season than he had in 2016-17, but given his determination, work ethic and seeming never-ending drive, it would actually be more surprising to see him have a worse year than it would to see him take yet another step forward.

I wouldn't be surprised because he won't have as good of players around him to open up the paint. He should get more offensive boards at least though

Especially considering that Rudy was an NBA All-Defensive Team member and on the All-NBA Second Team, one would think that as long as he can continue on a similar and hopefully improved trajectory next season, he ought to be a shoo-in for an All-Star bid.

The two sides have had preliminary conversations as the Jazz hope Hood can become their primary perimeter scorer this season after Gordon Hayward left for the Boston Celtics.

They're expecting too much out of him. Hopefully they don't pay him more than what a top 6th man would earn at most because that is the role is built for

Another meeting is expected to occur in the next few weeks, according to league sources.

after he proves something in pre-season I would assume

The Jazz are expected to allow Exum to reach restricted free agency unless he accepts a team-friendly deal similar to Alec Burks, who extended for $10 million annually three years ago.

They better not give Exum that kind of money when he's proven nothing. Burks had shown he was one of the best 6th men in the league at the time already. He's had bad luck since. I'd consider giving Exum a deal that reflects a developing talent if he shows he's earned that in pre-season maybe. A deal that would probably be a pay cut to his rookie contract! If he was smart h'd probably take it because otherwise he might be playing in front of Kabong next year in Australia

There is hope internally that Exum is on the verge of a breakout

of course there is. The wizard is looking too good with that pick

he is expected to play a key role off the bench this season

I wouldn't be expecting anything of him. I'd hope and pray he doesn't continue to suck. If he does he shouldn't be playing

Exum has yet to find his stride in the NBA, partially due to his torn ACL two years ago

Mostly because he's looked like an athlete and not a basketball player. Time to quit making excuses for him. The injury was unfortunate but he has shown little outside of 4 pre-season games in 3 years

Hood is eligible for an extension to his rookie scale contract until Oct. 31.

I knew that other date was too early

CARMELO takes into account both Hood's injured season in 2016-17 and 2015-16 when making the projection, and splits the difference, projecting about 2.2 wins added per season for the next few years. You'll notice that none of Hood's closest comparables went on to be All-Star caliber players: instead, they're guys who were nice role players for much of their careers. C.J. Miles has contributed well to the Pacers. Junior Bridgeman was a nice off-the-bench microwave scorer who then became worth $400 million (after buying a bunch of Wendy's franchises). Terrence Ross, Calbert Cheaney, Morris Peterson are all guys who are or were nice wing options for 20-30 minutes per game.

To be honest, that's Hood's most likely outcome: a solid rotation player, an average starter. In today's NBA, that puts Hood in line for a salary of about $12.5 million per year. 4 years (almost all rookie contract extensions are for four years), $50 million is a reasonable starting point.

Finally someone that can look at things realistically instead of making everyone on the Jazz out to be a star. He could be a great 6th man.

Hood's frequency numbers here are going to spike in 2017-18. Without Gordon Hayward, Hood is now probably the Jazz's No. 1 option to create offense in late shot clock situations, at least in those majority of minutes when Joe Johnson isn't on the floor. He'll take over a large portion of Hayward's scoring and playmaking responsibilities, and even with no improvement, will probably convert them at a slightly-above-average efficiency.

That's why I believe Rodney Hood is likely to be the Jazz's leading scorer next year. And if he is, it's probably reasonable to slate him in for about 17 points per game. Every team in the NBA had their leading scorer score at least 17 PPG last season except for one: the Detroit Pistons. Tobias Harris led them with 16.2 points per game, and even he recently signed a 4-year, $64 million extension. Orlando's Evan Fournier was the second lowest leading scorer last season (17.2 PPG), and he recently signed a 5-year, $85 million extension.

So you can see why the Jazz would be interested in getting Hood extended now: they're trying to get Hood at rotation-player-or-average-starter money before he gets the chance to show he can make nominal-leading-scorer-but-not-All-Star money. Meanwhile, Hood's representation will naturally shoot for more.

Gobert was averaging 17 plus at the end of last season and Burks and Favors have both been at 15 and 16 plus before. I think the bigs will have a harder go of it without shooters but I wouldn't count out Alec. He's a more dynamic offensive talent than Hood and the Jazz will want to showcase him. I'd bring them both off the bench personally. It's where they belong and Burks has already proven himself in that role. Hood os one dimensional and not a high paid starter.

On one hand, getting Rudy Gobert locked up last summer seems masterful now.

until he leaves in 4 years because he didn't get the 5 year max

you have the example of Hayward, who the Jazz opted not to give an extension to, which led to Hayward testing restricted free agency, getting a max offer, opting out a year earlier than he otherwise would have, and bad feelings all around.

bad feeling because the Jazz made you sign a max deal with Charlotte? Grow up!

Hood isn't as good as Hayward (even Hayward wasn't back in 2014)

a voice of reason. He's not an all-star? A go to Guy? Big 3?

But Hood has been working out with assistant coach Johnnie Bryant all summer, just as Hayward did before making his All-Star leap last year. And Hood has been a model citizen, the kind of player that the Jazz want to keep around the organization. He works hard

Much like Favors it doesn't sound like he has worked that hard until it was time to get paid

knows the importance of defense

:facepalm

If anyone has the intangibles and situation well-situated to improve, it's Hood.

Than why hasn't he? He improved slightly last year before the flu. He was more consistent. But at his age I don't see it. He's a scorer. He's never shown much else

Signing Hood to an extension now would reduce the amount of cap space the Jazz have to offer in free agency in 2018. Without a Hood extension, they can open up a maximum salary cap slot. With a Hood extension, they can't without doing some significant maneuvering.

Who's this max guy they are going to get to be part of the mess known as the Jazz?

Stretching-and-waiving Burks' contract isn't enough, and outright dumping it on another team might not be either depending on the size of Hood's deal.

and Burks could outplay him

Hood's representation will be interested in guaranteeing Hood a good paycheck, but know that a bigger one is likely around the corner if Hood puts up a solid, healthy season in an expanded role.

If I'm Hood I take the money if it's reasonable with his injury history

The Utah Jazz’s offseason was at large, a net negative, but there’s not a lot else the club could have done to prevent this.

Wrong. They upgrade the team and Hayward has a hard time leaving. Downgrading the roster he had little choice but to leave. After he left they could have signed guys that could shoot and defend and they didn't for some reason

Mitchell tore up NBA Summer League, even putting up 37 points and eight steals in one contest. The one thing to watch will be his shot selection, but playing with a more talented lineup should alleviate some of his tendencies to chuck.

He's just got to defend and hit open shots to start. Be hard not to play him if he does

There’s a bit of competition at the guard positions on the Jazz’s depth chart, but if Mitchell is as ready as he’s shown himself to be, he’ll be in line for minutes at the backup shooting guard spot behind Rodney Hood.

I think he could back-up Rubio as well. Ideally they will want him at the one eventually anyway

He wasn’t a win-now pick, but Bradley might be able to one day take over the backup center position.

Maybe even play some next to Rudy too? Hopefully he can have a big year with the Stars. Maybe get some rotation minutes with the Jazz after Johnson, Favors and maybe others are dealt

His fit will be something to watch, but there’s no question the Jazz pulled a great trade here.

He doesn't fit and Hayward left. How is it great?

Perhaps the team wouldn’t have re-signed Ingles, at least for the years and dollars they did, if they had known Hayward would be leaving.

Only reason to sign him was to keep Hayward happy so this was not a good signing. At least the money goes down every year

Thabo Sefolosha. A 12-year veteran, the forward is known mostly for his defensive prowess, but will be used as a complementary 3-and-D asset.

without the 3!

he’ll be sharing the court with mostly spacing-challenged point guards.

Neto can shoot. Mitchell might be able to

there’s really nothing to lose in signing a player like Thabo Sefolosha, which is why this deal earns a favorable grade.

Grade: A

Only way this makes sense is if he ends up at the 4 when Johnson is dealt

There’s also the possibility that he could play some small-ball center, where he spent 21 percent of his minutes last season.

That's where he makes the most sense next to Favors or Johnson.

Udoh’s signing may be a signal that the Jazz are planning on playing Derrick Favors at the 4 rather than the backup center spot

I'm thinking he is behind Jerebko. Have to stagger Favors and Gobert

Their roster sat at the regular season maximum of 15 contracts for next season, and with no discernible depth chart holes, there wasn’t a clear reason to add another player.

lack of talent is good reason

there’s a good chance that he’ll have to show management a lot in order to stick with the team for the following year.

Going to have to show a lot to make the team. He looks like the 16th guy to me

He might have been better served on a two-way contract, especially as his presence means the team will have to release one other player. Maybe the front office knows something we don’t, but at the moment, this looks like a confusing decision.

Yep! Might be to motivate Bolomboy?

The Jazz did just about all they could to convince Hayward to stay

They downgraded the roster instead of upgrading it!

Final Grade: A- LOL!

The main lineups for this is Rubio-Hood-Sefolosha-Favors-Gobert, with Exum Ingle Burks and Mitchell, all subbing in and out of the 1-2-3. This lineup looks insane defensively. With Favors slimming down and not playing on a bum leg, he can continue to shut down the 4 spot defensively. Having two shot blockers with 3 smart, long defenders will be key. Hood will be better defensively just by being around these guys and he has always had the physical gifts to be a good on ball defender.

Hood isn't long and isn't a defender. 6th man

If Rubio or Favors show any consistency from range, this lineup would almost be too versatile to be stopped.

They are hoping for big minutes out of rookies Tony Bradley and Donovan Mitchell.

Mitchell maybe

Thabo Sefolosha is also a nice piece and will give them some much-needed depth. He will most-likely start right away until Mitchell proves he can handle the league.

They should consider starting him over Hood but I doubt he will

if the Jazz want to defend their division title, Gobert is going to have to take on a larger role in the offense. He was extremely efficient last season in a very limited capacity. How well he plays offensively will determine how good this team can be.

Where do people rank Hood vs Ingles?

Ingles is the best returning player besides Rudy

I went for Neto because I think he is clearly third in the point guard depth chart and possibly even fourth if Mitchell plays any time at point.

I see him as 2nd until someone proves otherwise. I'd put Alec 3rd and Wolters 4th because they have proven something before.

If Neto is playing primary backup then Quin has either given up on Dante, or he and/or Rubio are injured, neither of which is a good outcome at all.

I'd rather he gave up on Exum than play him over someone better hoping that one day he won't suck anymore

David Locke had a theory that I agree with in principle, that teams should simply cut minutes of players in certain games to rest them, rather than taking them out of games entirely. While this makes sense, it is something the players do not want whatsoever. Playing less minutes means that a player will naturally have worse looking stats, and that could impact their next pay check. That makes this suggestion basically unrealistic, and I doubt it is the solution that will make everybody happy.

That's why they have per 36 stats. If guys produce people will pay them

Going along with the topic of rule changes, there has been talk of possibly allowing teams to draft players directly from high school once again.

Great! Once everyone has their own G-league team(hopefully next season) I see no reason why they shouldn't. It's time for kids to play in the minors until they prove they are NBA players. Would have helped Exum, Burke, Hood, etc.

Slow Mo Joe is a cerebral, skilled forward who can shoot and pass quite well. He should take on extra importance with Gordon Hayward gone.

higher than I'd put them. Certainly would have the Grizzlies over them

The Jazz came in at 16th overall in the NBA, 9th in the Western Conference, and 5th in the Northwest Division. Obviously the Jazz will have much higher expectations than missing the playoffs and finishing last in their division. They are the defending Northwest Division champs, and they will look to defend the banner.

Defend a meaningless banner! They are 5th without a doubt on paper

Rodney Hood has shown he can score in bunches. But scoring consistently and efficiently is what he needs to do to breakout in 2017-18.

Needs to show he can do more than just score if he's going to be the starter/all-star/go-to-guy everyone thinks he is. I'm not seeing it. Raul Neto is the third point guard, but the Jazz have a handful of players (Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles) who could play spot minutes at point guard to fill in minutes not taken by Ricky Rubio and Dante Exum.

Neto should be considered the 2nd pg until someone proves otherwise. Can't see him being cut. He's an NBA rotation player somewhere where length isn't the end all. He might get traded.

Bolomboy is fairly expendable. He’s the fourth power forward on the roster in a league where power forward is a very undervalued position. Despite some hometown love from fans, Bolomboy seems more likely to be on his way out than the other two.

They have no other young PF. He can stretch the floor and he played his role well the two times he got quality minutes last year.

To me Exum is the guy to go if he doesn't step up.

Gobert and Rubio will likely find their way to 10/10 seasons (taking entirely different routes to that 10/10)

Rubio has only averaged 9 assists once and barely reached 10 points in any year. How is that likely?

I think it’s really great that the Jazz are trying to keep the arena modern and giving the fans the best product they can.

I'd rather they tried giving the fans the best product on the floor personally but apparently that will never happen

Utah improved its backcourt defensively by trading up to draft rookie combo guard Donovan Mitchell and then dealing for Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio.

we'll see

Adding those two in the backcourt should help the Jazz get easy buckets in transition off turnovers.

Too bad Rubio sucks in transition

Perhaps the one question for Utah offensively is: Can players such as Gobert, Ingles and Rodney Hood run the floor effectively in those situations?

Ingles and Gobert can. Not sure that is Hood's strong suit though

[QUOTE]Exum is also a question mark given that he hasn

adding All-Star Jimmy Butler for nearly nothing

Wouldn't call a young 20 point scorer almost nothing personally not to mention the Wolves last two lottery selections!

The Wolves were already a young and rising team, but now with the likes of Butler and other savvy veterans, they will look to be a force to be reckoned with in the West as well.

more importantly maybe the best coach in the world

with Rudy Gobert anchoring the defense, several new players that are bound to make an impact

Why are they bound to? They could all suck. Jonas is the one that makes sense to me

far from a weak link in the dominant Northwest Division.

definitely the weak link

there’s a chance that Utah’s division is about to get even more stacked with yet another All-Star in Carmelo Anthony set to switch teams

I think he could make a team worse personally. One of the most overrated players ever!

it appears now that Melo is expanding his list of teams to include two Northwest Division foes – the Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers.

He hasn't included Portland

One would imagine that the Melo saga should be wrapped up in the next few days

Don't count on it. You just wrote that it will be hard because of his contract :wtf:

even though training camp is essentially upon us, this wacky offseason is far from finalized just yet.

Yeah we're still waiting for the Jazz to add one more guy to camp

Only get to boo Enes once a year now. Hayward once a year. Deron currently out of the league. What will Jazz fans do? :facepalm

OKC opened up a roster spot and Semaj Christon is their 3rd pg so Neto would make sense there. I'd take him over Felton too especially on a team that will need D and shooters around their stars

However, according to the recent ESPN Preseason BPI (Basketball Power Index) Rankings, the Jazz are calculated to find themselves just barely on the outside looking in this upcoming season. The rankings have them pinned as the 16th best team in the league overall and 9th in the Western Conference, finishing behind the likes of the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers.

a lot higher than I see them!

I was actually surprised to see the Los Angeles Clippers pinned as high as they were

2 all-stars one of which is comparable to the Jazz's best player and the other an actually superstar unlike the half dozen this site likes to tout!

all signs this offseason have seemed to indicate that the Jazz are going to have an incredible chemistry

really?

unmatched depth that will allow them to remain formidable for a full 48 minutes night in and night out.

About 30 percent of Hood's shots came in the floater zone between 3 and 16 feet from the rim, a share that ranked in the 90th percentile among wing players, according to research from Ben Falk of Cleaning the Glass. Trade a few of those for drives and 3s, and Utah will have something.

He's best in the mid range

Hood could average 20 per game this season, but will they be the kind of points that lead to winning?

Depending on how large a role Donovan Mitchell is given, he could also put up a real case for Rookie of the Year honors, and is sure to take home the monthly award from time to time.

:wtf:

with the departure of Gordon Hayward, he is likely to have an increase in playing time as well. With that being the case, Johnson could average between 12-14 points a night off the bench.

I doubt it. He's old. Burks is the 6h man. Should be Hood and Burks

Honorable Mention: Donovan Mitchell. If he is given the chance to be a primary option off the bench, he is capable of scoring 12 points a night.

If he can do that he will be the primary option. You have no idea what he can do though

This is the year where he is going to have to show the Jazz that they did not make a mistake by drafting Exum with the number 5 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

Don't think he can change that

During the playoffs and the summer league, he passed the eye test.

He mostly sucked in the playoffs.
