the Jazz have filled the roster, employing more players than the league allows, and that means the Jazz must cut at least one before the beginning of the season. With Rudy Gobert, Favors, Jonas Jerebko, Ekpe Udoh, Tony Bradley and Eric Griffin under contract, the Jazz have one of the deepest frontcourts in the NBA.

Many before the start of last season had Derrick Favors pegged as the Utah Jazz player that would be an All-Star and All-NBA player first before Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert. But Derrick’s knee had other plans.

Who thought that? Rudy has been there best player for almost 3 years now. :coleman:

With Derrick, Alec, Rodney and Dante healthy again, with all the new players--Rubio, Mitchell, Udoh, Sefolosha, Jerebko and Bradley--and with Rudy, Joe Johnson, Joe Ingles and Neto, the Jazz have 14 players who could deserve minutes on this team.

Right now I'd say 11 and Wolters can only play 1/3 of the year with the Jazz. The jury is still out on Exum, Mitchell, Bradley, Udoh, Royce and Griffin.

Rubio was highly touted as a brilliant passer and potential NBA star when he was drafted into the league. However, unfortunately a combination of early injuries, playing with a young team and enduring a constant coaching carousel in Minnesota have prevented him from truly becoming that player.

For the third straight season, the Jazz will have a different starter at point guard

It's at least 4. Rubio, Hill, Neto/Mack, Burke

The second unit will be almost exclusively comprised of new faces, including rookie guard Donovan Mitchell and veteran small forward Thabo Sefalosha.

We'll see. One of them could start. No guarantee either is in the rotation either.

The Jazz have made a habit of bringing in famous basketball minds to watch practice, and then pick their brains afterwards.
Tom Thibadeau dropped by two years ago, before he went to the Minnesota Timberwolves. On Tuesday it was former Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.

Taylor Braun signed with the Jazz on Tuesday morning, giving the Jazz their 20th player. He's a North Dakota State alum, who most recently played with ratiopharm Ulm of the German Bundesliga. That Bundesliga tie, and the overwhelming likelihood that Braun is cut and is sent to the SLC Stars, means that new Stars head coach (and former Bundesliga head coach) Martin Schiller has his fingerprints all over this move.

Deron Williams was highly touted, but spent his rookie season playing behind veteran point guard Keith McLeod.

And Palacio! Jerry. :facepalm

Dante Exum was the fifth pick of the 2014 draft. He ended up a starter in the second half of the season, but that was out of necessity because Quin Snyder lost trust in Trey Burke.

Out of necessity because they didn't have an NBA pg until they finally brought Neto over

But almost all within the organization are expecting to make the postseason again, or at least contend for a playff spot. And Mitchell is expected to play a role in that.

I'm ok with him starting the year in the G-league

Mitchell enters training camp as a backup shooting guard.

He shouldn't. He needs to earn it

He has a two-way ability, even as a rookie, that the Jazz are going to need.

"I've known Thabo since I got in this league, and I know he's an all-around player who can play on both ends of the floor," Jerebko said. "In two weeks, he's shown a lot of offensive skills, and he's made a lot of shots. He's worked on his game this summer, you can tell."

If he's making shots at the rate he did during his peak in Oklahoma City, it would lift the Jazz in a really significant way. In the 2012-13 season, he shot 41.9 percent on 3.2 3-point shots per game. To give you some context, that's nearly identical to Joe Johnson's 3-point rate and accuracy last season.

5 years ago. Don't count on it!

Remember last year, when the biggest surprise of training camp was coming in to find out that Alec Burks and Derrick Favors weren't especially close to being healthy?

Don't remember hearing that about Favors. He looked improved in the first pre-season game and was never the same after

We don't want to wear (assistant coach) Igor Kokoskov out."

:lol

But a healthy roster at this point in the season is already a step forward compared to 2016-17.

2 days and 3 practices!

Jerebko's going to be playing essentially all of his minutes on the Jazz in a stretch four role, someone Snyder can put on the floor who can shoot without losing a lot of size.

I imagine the 5 as well

He'll have to fight for those stretch four minutes with Joe Johnson. "Joe, in a pinch, can guard the three, though I think we'd like to keep him more at the four," Snyder said when asked about the 36-year-old veteran.

After what we saw last year it would be stupid to have him at the 3 unless the match-up really calls for it

Jerebko is kind of a hybrid option at the power forward spot: he's not as good of a shooter and scorer as Johnson, but a better screener and rebounder. Of course, if screening and rebounding is most important, Derrick Favors is the best option.

but he'll have to play the 5 when Rudy's pot at least with Joe. Jonas might be the 5 and Favors the 4 I guess but I would assume the other way around

This hasn't been a stated big focus so far in training camp, but it's come up enough times in passing that I'm eager to watch for it in the scrimmage and in the first preseason games.

It seems that a few members of the Jazz have been using a really high-energy pressuring style of defense to good effect so far. Take what Snyder said about Mitchell's defensive efforts Thursday:

"If you're on the wing and you want to get open, you better be ready to try hard. Because he's going to make it hard for you to catch the ball."

Rubio, too, said he's pressuring more than he was able to in Minnesota.

"With this coach, he gives me a lot of freedom," he said. "I go out there and pressure the ball and be aggressive."

And when Thabo Sefolosha talked about his defense today, he said, "there's a lot of it that's technique, there's a lot of it that's sheer will."

You may notice another commonality between those three players: they're new to the Jazz. In the past, a lot of Utah's players have talked about how playing with Rudy Gobert has freed them up to be more aggressive on the wing, knowing that Gobert is there to deal with anything at the rim. It seems like the newcomers are starting to realize the potential of playing with that force on the perimeter.

Rudy!

No. 6: Collin Sexton (Alabama, PG/SG, Freshman)

Sexton's rookie year would be Rubio's last under contract in Utah, and though there are still high hopes for Dante Exum, he isn't the same caliber scorer.

Mitchell is the future point. Is he long?

No. 7: Miles Bridges (Michigan State, SF/PF, Sophomore)

A future trio of Exum, Mitchell and Bridges would ooze athleticism and versatility.

A 3/4 would seem to make more sense at the moment. but the roster could look totally different by draft time. Is he long?

No. 8: Jaren Jackson Jr. (Michigan State, PF/C, Freshman)

With Derrick Favors entering the final year of his deal, the Jazz could look at Jackson, who's flashed greater defensive and shooting potential.

Might make sense. is he long?

No. 9: Kevin Knox (Kentucky, SF/PF, Freshman)

Knox could be the player Utah thought it was getting when the Jazz took Trey Lyles.

Is he long?

3) Utah Jazz

:facepalm

The offense is also a question mark. Not so much in terms of running it through Rodney Hood

That's certainly one of the biggest question marks. A 6th man is your go to guy?

The Jazz split up into teams so that the starting unit all played on one team, wearing gray. That meant that the starting Gray team in the scrimmage was Ricky Rubio, Rodney Hood, Joe Ingles, Derrick Favors, and Rudy Gobert. That's a good bet for the Jazz's day one starting lineup Monday.

Hood is a 6th man

One teammate of Joe Ingles' told me he's been shooting the ball as well or better than ever, and that was on display in the scrimmage.

Going to be tougher this year

Tony Bradley was really impressive to me. He rebounded and finished well, but my favorite part was when he got switched out on someone on the perimeter (admittedly, Royce O'Neale, not the quickest wing) and moved his feet well to force a turnover. He's very fundamentally sound, though had a fantastic block on Eric Griffin in transition.

Good to hear. Hopefully he does well with the Stars and can be in the rotaion later in the year

Dante Exum struggled to find his game at first, but had a lot more success in the second half against fellow Jazz benchers. He got to the free-throw line at will then, because his length and surprising layup timing forced defenders to foul him. "I thought he attacked, and I thought he made good decisions and tried to run the club, too," Snyder said.

Against the bench. Can he actually play? :confusedshrug:

Raul Neto is just so much fun. It's not that he did anything that we haven't seen him do before, but his vision and passing is special.

Too bad it will take another team to appreciate him

Exum, who will be fighting for time this season behind Rubio at the point, and perhaps with several others on the wing, was impressive in the second half when he got to the basket several times for scores and also sank a 3-pointer.

Gray team wins, 49-41. Rudy Gobert, Joe Ingles, Donovan Mitchell, Tony Bradley, and Raul Neto all really impressive.

Bradley is the surprise. Hopefully he'll be ready to contribute later on in the year when the roster changes. Was he playing with Rudy? That would be big

Arnovitz thinks the Jazz will be a top five defense. Not a new thought, certainly, but still interesting from a national voice.

Really going out on a limb with that one

The best part of the conversation was about Dante Exum. It sounds like Arnovitz is a bigger fan, but Lowe has real questions about whether or not Exum will maintain his place in the rotation.

What spot? He hasn't really had a spot since he was a rookie and he was one of the worst offensive players ever that year! Last year him, Neto and Mack were all in and out and Neto had seemingly won the spot before getting injured at the end of the season. Of course it hasn't stopped the local hype about the guy. He needs to earn a spot. Simple as that!

and still no injuries!

One matchup to watch Monday is at the center position: the Sydney Kings' Isaac Humphries, the 19-year-old who played minor minutes with Kentucky for two seasons before joining the Kings this summer will match up against Rudy Gobert.

And, in what will be motivation for Gobert, Humphries isn't afraid of the matchup:

"I've played against the best centers every day in college for two years, so I'm not really that worried about it," Humphries said. "He's a great player, but I'm quite used to playing against great players."

You have to admire his confidence, I suppose? But yeah, this isn't going to turn out well for Humphries.

Bulletin board material for Rudy!

Here's the big question: will Exum find time ahead of Donovan Mitchell and Alec Burks? Maybe it's just relative to expectations, but I've heard much more about Mitchell and Burks' training camp performance from second-hand sources than Exum's contributions. We'll learn a lot more about how the battle for backup guard minutes shapes up among those three players in the first few games of preseason action.

Sounded to me like Neto played better in the scrimmage too not surprisingly

Speaking of minute restrictions, Favors was very restricted last year because of knee and back problems that really hurt him. And when asked if he was back to his previous level of explosion, Snyder was positive, though maybe not 100 percent positive.

"I think so. I think in the last couple of months, he's pain free, which is the biggest thing," Snyder said. "We'll continue to see gains, and now that that's the case, he can continue to work on his body, his explosiveness and his lateral movement, and he can get back to the point where he's comfortable. He's getting closer."

Of course the Jazz have the medical testing on him: they've tested his lateral and vertical movement before the injury, and they've tested it afterwards. But understandably, they're keeping that information close to the vest.

Doesn't sound 100% still to me :banghead:

[QUOTE]"There was a stretch last year at Louisville where he handled the ball more," Snyder pointed out. Louisville went 4-2 over the stretch when Louisville PG Quentin Snider was injured, and Mitchell played pretty well during that stretch.

Pre-season is not always the best indicator of rotations, but it will be interesting to see how and if Coach Snyder uses Alec Burks and Jonas Jerebko. Burks is healthy and has been a full participant in practice. However, with the rookie Donovan Mitchell and Dante Exum already in the back court the minutes for Burks may be limited.

Yeah I'd play the 2 guys that have proven nothing over the guy that is a proven scorer especially when you need scoring desperately

Jerebko played 17 minutes a night last year in Boston and gives the Jazz some unique shooting skills at the stretch 4. That is where Joe Johnson prospered last season and the Jazz offense was really tough to guard with Johnson at the 4. How Jerebko gets his minutes will be interesting.

Bolomboy will have to show some real growth for the Utah Jazz to reserve a roster spot for him.

As far as I'm concerned Exum is the guy that needs to show drastic improvement or they need to move on from him

Rodney is an extremely talented offensive player. He can score from anywhere on the floor and in a variety of ways. Two things have held him back in the past: 1) Health and 2) His mindset as a number 1 option.

I'd say he already had the mindset based on him rarely passing the ball. What has held him back is he's a bench player and he's been starting

Now, he should be healthy, and should have no set backs.

He shouldn't? Crystal ball? The flu ruined his season a year ago. It's fairly likely he might get the flu again:rolleyes:

The Jazz offense is one predicated on ball movement/player movement, and he should get shots up within the offense. I want to watch for how often he breaks out of the offense because he believes he can take his man and get his own shot.

99% of the time? You've never seen Hood play I take it. He won't be a go to guy. He'll be one of their top 4 scorers maybe even #1 but not a go to guy

The main thing I will be watching for is rather Exum belongs in the league yet. Can he hit an open shot and defend without his hands.

Joe Ingles and Dante Exum looked great playing a team from their home country. Joe Ingles played great defense while showing that irrational confidence that made him so much fun to watch last season. Dante Exum continues to display his improvement as he easily can get to the hoop and find the open man as he forces the defense to collapse on him during his drives.

Exum was not great. He got to the rim last year. He actually made a couple lay-ups this time though before missing one. Also hit an open 3, defended without fouling and made a couple nice passes. His game still doesn't excite me though. He doesn't have the feel for the game that Mitchell already has

The night, though, truly belonged to Rudy Gobert and Rodney Hood.

I didn't think Hood was that special. He hit some shots. 6th man

Donovan Mitchell most likely pushed himself into the early Rookie of the Year conversation with just one preseason game.

we have to say this about everything that follows in this game: every Jazz player who played Monday night is better than every Sydney Kings player. At peak form, the Jazz could have won this game by 50 points, not 25.

not sure about that

Things were not as good for the Jazz's second unit. The Jazz's bench is slated to be one of their strengths this year, but in the second quarter, they fell apart on both ends, allowing 32 points in the quarter and scoring just 23. What happened?

I think a bench with Hood, Burks, Johnson, Sefolsha and Jerebko could be scary. Mitchell looked like a starter last night to me. Neto and Burks both appear to be on the 4rd unit now

Rubio didn't hit a shot all game

not only that but he wasn't close!

The biggest problem for Favors is still this: his roll-to-the-rim duties have been taken by Gobert.

Yep but they staggered his minutes as expected so he'll get his chances

Dante Exum was good. He was somewhat responsible for the second-quarter swoon, but I liked what he did in finding his way to the basket, and he made his only three to boot. He still drives baseline more than most, but it worked Monday night.

will it work against NBA players though?

Ekpe Udoh went to the rim well, but also had a couple of embarrassing turnovers. I was surprised that he played next to Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors. Can he play the four in Utah?

Might have been just to get him time. I thought he looked good though

Royce O'Neale was solid on defense and really limited on offense. He also lost a tooth!

Huge focus by the Jazz to increase tempo after misses. The Jazz did this early in the game and ran away to a big lead. However, they were unable to sustain that for the entire night and that is what is so hard about trying to be a running team is maintaining that level of energy for the entire night.

If they are as deep as I keep reading than they should be able to

The Jazz played vertically at the rim all night. They were playing about the box all night. Ricky Rubio and Joe Ingles were feeding Rudy Gobert all night. It will be interesting to see against an NBA team with bigger guys if the Jazz are able to do the same thing.

Donovan Mitchell and Raul Neto will both not play in Wednesday's game. Mitchell had tightness in his right hamstring and didn't practice Tuesday. Neto practiced Tuesday, but experienced tightness in his left quadriceps.

"We just want to be smart about it," Snyder said. And he also mentioned that it was in the Jazz's preseason plan to give more time to the end of the bench, guys like Burks, Nate Wolters and Royce O'Neale.

"We had planned on doing that anyway. We practiced really hard yesterday, so we anticipated doing that," Snyder said. "It's hard to be a 16-20 in camp. I've experienced that."

Wolters!

"Alec had a really good summer. In the month of August, he got a chance to play," Snyder said. "Offensively, he can make some plays, and he's really been focused defensively."

So why is he behind Exum?

"I want to get back to the physical player I was, but I'm definitely different than I was back then," Burks said. "I'm trying to mature my game."

What does that mean? "Just play at a slower pace, make better decisions, play smarter, play within the offense more, make better decisions than I was when I was that 23-year-old just running around all the time."

They've neutered him. He needs to go somewhere where he can play his game

"If we miss and Joe or Rodney gets the rebound, I want them to push and I want Ricky to run. If they don't get the rebound, I still want them to get out and run and for them to get the pass," Snyder said.

"(If a big rebounds), we want Ricky to have it or we want Dante to have it. Because of Ricky in transition and his ability to pass, I want Joe running to get to the corner so he can knock down that three. Or it's a situation where, because Ricky is so good at throwing the ball ahead, our wings are up the court are able to make plays."

"The main thing with Joe and Rodney and our wings is that I don't want them coming back to the ball. If they get an outlet, it should be a longer outlet," Snyder said.

There were a couple of times on Monday where Rubio tried those lengthy forward passes, but his teammates weren't used to getting the ball in those situations, so they cut their runs short. Rubio mentioned that he's talked to his teammates to trust him to get them the ball in those situations.

That's one problem with Exum playing is that he can't run to the corner. I'd rather Ingles had the ball in transition than Exum.

Alec is back! Don't see how you can play Dante over him personally. Dante still missing lay-ups. Sefolosha missing wide open 3's though so did Ingles. Thabo looks good otherwise. Rubio trying to force too many passes. Udoh is a bit clumsy it appears.

Going to have some tough decisions. O'Neal looks good. 3 and D anyway. The rest of his game is a bit rough. Need to trade Johnson. Bolomboy looks ready to contribute. The Canadian kid looked good too. Stars could be loaded! Griffin can play. He should be at the end of the Jazz bench instead of O'Neal not on a two way.

https://www.ksl.com/?sid=46051484&nid=304&title=the-triple-team-3-thoughts-on-jazz-domination-over-bad-maccabi-haifa-team

Before the game, I expected this Maccabi Haifa team to put up more of a challenge to the Jazz than the Sydney Kings. I was wrong, and it's not just the scoreline that reflects that.

I figured they would be too. Maybe Hood and Johnson not playing made the difference though?

Those clanks off the rim weren't really responsible for the Jazz's offensive success, though. The Jazz finished with only four fast-break points and a relatively average-efficiency 23 points off of the 18 Haifa turnovers.

Where's the fast break we've heard so much about? They are pushing it up court and looking for opportunities at least now

the Jazz bench shot really well from the outside. Both Alec Burks and Royce O'Neale were 3-for-3 from downtown, and Joel Bolomboy went 2-for-3. Overall, the Jazz shot 53.8 percent on their relatively open 3-point looks.

They need to trade some guys and make room for young guys eventually. Bolomboy and Royce can start the year in the G-league but they look like they are ready to play. Burks might be the 2nd best player on the team and their best offensive player at least. He's better than Hood certainly. I could even see starting him.

The Jazz did throw up 21 turnovers, but that can be mostly excused by the bench playing major minutes and Rubio trying to be a bit too aggressive.

tried to force to many things. Won't be able to do that against NBA teams

The Jazz have had one of the best records in the league in the last few years at beating bad teams, and I suspect that their offensive passing and defensive excellence will be enough to do that again this year. Against good teams? We'll have to wait and see.

Yeah I figure they will do well against most of the east again and the few bad teams in the west but will have a hard time getting wins against the others who are mostly in the west

Alec Burks led the Jazz in scoring (16 points), rebounding (eight rebounds, all defensive), and minutes (playing 23:03 off the bench) tonight. He could have had more, too: he missed an easy layup, and shot only 3-of-7 from the free throw line.

But I've been really encouraged by what I've seen from Burks in the preseason so far, both on and off the court. Obviously, the scoring is nice on a team that needs it, but he's given a generally good effort on the defensive end.

So what excuse will they have for playing Dante or even Hood or Sefolosha ahead of him? They need his scoring, shooting and playmaking. He rebounds. He's athletic. He's long.

Burks shot under 40 percent from within three feet of the hoop. That's bad.

that had more to do with his injuries than the way he finished though

avoiding contact isn't really worth it when the contact is worth two trips to the free-throw line.

He loves contact though. He isn't Hood!

It's still going to be difficult for Burks to really earn minutes: Rubio, Rodney Hood, Donovan Mitchell, and Exum all probably deserve time over Burks at the guard spot. But if he keeps playing this well, he's going to end up with some playing time in a contract year.

It's not a contract year. Not sure any of those guys deserve to play over him. Certainly not Exum or even Hood. Mitchell is comparable and you could even argue he offers more than Rubio because of Rubio's shooting. Burks ran the offense well!

Who to cut?
Both Royce O'Neale and Joel Bolomboy played really well for the Jazz tonight, while Raul Neto sat out due to left quadriceps tightness after two excellent showings. The reason those three players belong in the same sentence despite playing different positions at different times is this: all three are competing for the last two spots on the Jazz's 15-man roster.

I don't think anyone will necessarily be cut. I think trading Joe Johnson would be the best move if possible. Still don't get why they haven't already. Neto I imagine could be traded. He is a rotation player for someone that isn't obsessed with length and like guys that can play. Bolomoboy and Royce are both looking too good to cut as well. Exum is still young and is improving and ideally he would start the year in the G-league but supposedly he refused to go there last year so I'm not sure what you do with him. He's not one of their top 11 guys right now the way I see it. Might not even be ahead of Bolomboy or Royce or Griffin really!

O'Neale feels like a classic Jazz 3-and-D bet, along the same lines as Chris Johnson and Elijah Millsap.

They weren't 3 and D!

O'Neale probably has a better offensive feel than those guys, though, as well as a better 3-point jump shot. In college, he shot 40 percent, and internationally, he shot 33 percent. That's not great, but it's better than Millsap or Johnson.

Johnson had a better feel I'd say from what I've seen. Royce shoots the 3 better certainly!

Bolomboy has really played well in these first two preseason games after a really bad summer league that probably led to the Jazz signing O'Neale in the first place.

Doubt it had much to do with it. I'd say they liked Royce and wanted him from what I've seen. He's good.

He lacks the feel that O'Neale has, but might have the higher ceiling.

Not sure about that. Both might be in the rotation by the end of the season once the roster turns over

Raul Neto probably has the lowest ceiling of the three, but has just played so well, and so consistently before tonight. He also probably benefits from the positional math: he can be a solid third-string point guard, whereas Bolomboy might be the Jazz's fifth center, and O'Neale might be their eighth wing.

Neto is a proven rotational player. I think he could be like Barea but bigger and better with a shot. A pest defensively that can run an offense too. Bolomboy looks like he could deserve rotation minutes too based on last year and so far this pre-season. If O'Neale can defend and hit the 3 he is too!

Bolomboy makes almost as much ($1.3 million), and O'Neale makes the minimum ($815K). Both of the latter two have guaranteed contracts. Anyone who is waived is unlikely to stick around and play for the Salt Lake City Stars, in my opinion.

Bolomboy is only partially guaranteed. He has already proven himself in the G-league though it should be a lot better this year with the two way contracts and more money. Not sure if O'Neale has played there yet but the Jazz owe him regardless. Neto will get picked up I'm sure. They might want to go to the G-league because they are all close to NBA rotations I'd say

What will the Jazz do? My completely uninformed guess is cutting Bolomboy, but they have three more games to gather more info.

The only young 4 on the team and he hits 3's. Hard to see him going unless it's in a trade. O'Neale a 3 and D on a ream that loves D and lacks shooting. Hard to see him going either! Neto being traded seems more likely to me. Love him but he needs to play somewhere that they appreciate him. That's not Utah where length beats skill

Alec Burks continued his very strong pre-season. He hit some threes early and then drove to the rim with more control than he had in the past. He has always been a great rebounding guard and he had 8 tonight to go with his 16 points. Both of those lead the team. I am not sure where Alec Burks gets minutes with Dante Exum and Donovan Mitchell both in the guard rotation, but he is making a strong claim for playing time.

Dante needs to earn it. He's still missing lay-ups. He has to be able to hit shts and defend because I can't see putting the ball in his hands. Many others can run the offense better.

If there are any possible areas for an early and unwarranted overreaction, it could be aimed at Jazz point guard Ricky Rubio. Rubio is yet to record a made field goal so far in two preseason games. Dante Exum, on the other hand, has played well in two games, which possibly opens up the discussion for a competition for the starting point guard spot.

Dante shouldn't be in the rotation. Burks or Mitchell instead of Rubio maybe but it's not happening!

He looks improved but hardly a totally different player or someone that I'd want running the 2nd unit. Still can't finish and doesn't have a good feel for the game. He needs to play off the ball mostly and that's if he can hit 3's which he has in limited attempts so far and defend which he has without fouling even.

That's one thing that league observers feel that Exum needs to improve: that feel for the game, making the kind of consistently great decisions that the NBA demands from its point guards.

The one thing? What about finishing? Can he shoot? He definitely doesn't have a good feel for the game though. Many guys on the team that should be running the offense before him still

But in order to maintain his place as a point guard in the NBA, it's plays like this that make the difference.

He has no place as a pg yet

It's unbelievable that there are still non-televised NBA games in 2017, especially at home. While the Jazz and AT&T SportsNet are under no contractual obligation to show the game, not doing so is a disservice to the fans who they make money from for the rest of the season. The Jazz didn't shoot particularly well Friday night, only 41.2 percent from the floor. But what they did do was take a ton of shots: 97, to be precise. The highest number of shots the Jazz took in last year's regular season was 93, so that is a really high number for the Jazz.

Worse offensive players taking more shots. Sounds like a recipe for disaster

How did they do it? Through dominating the glass and forcing a ton of turnovers.

Will that work against good teams?

it wasn't a good situation for Mitchell to be thrown into. After Exum went down, Mitchell became the backup point guard by default in a game where the Jazz already didn't want to play Ricky Rubio a lot of minutes.

Probably just want to see what he can do. No reason Burks, Hood, Ingles, Johnson can't handle the ball more

Mitchell figures to play at least some point guard during Exum's injury, along with Raul Neto and perhaps Alec Burks.

All of them should be ahead of Exum anyway.

Not sure about that. They lost some tough players over the summer and have had some before

This might be a bit of the model on how the Jazz are able to be successful offensive team this year. They dominate the glass and then hit some threes and that makes for at least an average offense.

Who's going to hit 3's especially if Burks and Neto aren't playing. Hard to see how Burks isn't playing or isn't the starter actually

Alec Burks continues his strong pre-season with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist. With Dante Exum out Burks may find himself with a roll in the rotation and with some serious playing time.

The Utah Jazz have great depth, but this injury is particularly hard for them to overcome.

Hurts their depth but makes their rotation better assuming he was part of it

Now without Exum, the Jazz have to either thrust rookie Donovan Mitchell into a ball-handling roll or play more traditional point guard Raul Neto. Neither scenario gives the Jazz anything similar to what Exum was able to deliver off the bench.

Both are still better players despite his improvement. Those aren't the only options. I'd start Burks. Bring Hood off the bench. Between Hood, Mitchell and Johnson they have 3 guys on the bench that can run the offense and Rubio, Burks and Ingles amongst the starters. Neto is available if needed

Braun is still planning on joining the Salt Lake City Stars for their training camp later this month. Stars head coach Martin Schiller said that he thinks Braun can be a "solid" D-League player on the wing.

He did have one moment in the sun at an NBA level, after Exum went out on Friday. League rules specify that the opposing coach can choose which player shoots free throws, and Suns coach Earl Watson chose Braun (a 78 percent free throw shooter in college). He supplied the second unit with length and athleticism from the position through three games, and the Jazz will struggle to duplicate that in his absence.

You mean other than Burks and Mitchell?

There are multiple options for Utah with Exum sidelined. The most obvious is elevating Raul Neto into the backup point guard role, and the Jazz will do this on many nights. Neto was slated to be the third point guard on the roster but has proven in the past that he can be a rotation player in the NBA.

The most obvious is Burks moves into the rotation. Why doesn't Neto play if he's proven and Exum still is not though?

Another option is playing rookie Donovan Mitchell some at the position. This would allow for more rotation minutes from shooting guard Alec Burks,

He's getting seriously overrated! He's looked improved. Defending without his hands. Hit 2 out 3 open 3's. Made some passes. Still missing lay-ups and doesn't have a good feel for the game yet

Dante Exum is out, most likely for the season.

Why keep saying things you have no idea about. Could be 6 weeks

Quin Snyder used a mix of Alec Burks and Donovan Mitchell at the backup point guard position. It seems that the Jazz have a decision to make. They can either continue this course or keep Raul Neto and vote another player off the island. Dante was going to be a big part of this season, and the backcourt rotations are going to need some serious adjusting.

I imagine they'll continue with Neto on the bench. Burks should start. Hood, Mitchell, Johnson can run the offense as can Burks and Ingles when they are playing with the bench.

Donovan Mitchell continues our ranking of the the Utah Jazz roster by coming in 7th. This comes as no surprise, considering how he has played so far in a Jazz uniform.

I'd put him 3rd I think!

[QUOTE]Dennis Lindsey thought enough of Mitchell to move up 11 spots on draft night and get him at 13th overall. But if that night was redone, no way would 13th be high enough to select him again. He was already rated the 3rd biggest steal of the draft by NBA GM

Make no mistake about it, in what was bound to be his best year as a pro yet, he will be very much missed.

He's sucked! I would hope it would be his best year. It's too bad but sadly the Jazz got better in the short term with this inury

Going into the 2017-18 season, it was clear that the Utah Jazz were pretty dang deep at the wing positions. Their starters were clearly slated to be newly acquired Ricky Rubio and rising star Rodney Hood

Rising star? He is a scorer. A 6th man if they had a clue. He's no star

the Jazz have taken a step back — through no fault of their own

It was totally their fault. Upgrade the roster and Hayward stays

If the Nuggets could go back in time, they would probably choose to keep Donovan Mitchell instead of swapping him for Tyler Lydon on draft night. At the time of the draft, the Nuggets looked to pair their star center, Nikola Jokic, with a forward capable of shooting from the perimeter. Enter Lydon.

The problem is, Mitchell could be the steal of a historically deep draft class, and the Nuggets found a way to sign one of the best stretch fours in the NBA, Paul Millsap, during the free agency period. Millsap, an All-Star in Atlanta, will exclusively play the power forward position with the Nuggets, leaving former Jazzman Trey Lyles and Lydon with scraps.

Doubt they would have done it any different. They got plenty of talented young guards even younger with more potential than Mitchell and got two young stretch bigs that they like

Wilson Chandler, Darrell Arthur, Jameer Nelson, Will Barton, Gary Harris, Emmanuel Mudiay and Jamal Murray — all of whom will be in Mike Malone’s rotation — are returning.

Where would Mitchell fit there? Harris is good. Murray looked like a player to me last year. Mudiay still has a lot to prove though

Chandler and Arthur are older. Lyles and Lydon make more sense

Towns is virtually the only center in the NBA capable of doing, well, everything. Towns made almost 37 percent of his 3-point attempts on more than three tries from deep a game. For comparison, Rodney Hood shot the same percentage from three as Towns. Defensively, Towns is one of a handful of big men in the NBA who can switch onto guards without getting burned. He routinely switches screens, defending the likes of Russell Westbrook and John Wall.

His D has sucked!

While both Davis and Cousins are All-Stars and arguably the best at their respective positions, neither have skill-sets that complement each other Jokic and Millsap, for instance, can play together because they don’t occupy the same space. When Jokic is down on the block, Millsap can play outside, giving him the room he needs to operate. Davis and Cousins have expanded their range, but defenses will welcome perimeter shots from both.

There's no argument until they show they can make their teams better. Cousins is a loser and Davis is soft. They actually do compliment each other quite well on paper. Cousins shot 36% from 3! Davis wasn't so good but potentially he can shoot it. Problem is that he is soft and wants to stay on the perimeter. Jazz should be higher than these guys

the lack of shooting hindered the team’s spacing, making it a simple puzzle for other teams to solve.

Yet the Jazz are better than last year!

What if Rondo, who played with Cousins in Sacramento, regains his chemistry with the center and, with that, his value?

That great chemistry that led to another lottery?

The Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers and Jazz all made the postseason last year, but could end up losing their spots to the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans or Minnesota Timberwolves. The Jazz will be one of the few clinging onto their spot, hoping one of the rising teams doesn’t snatch it.

Jazz will officially be looking to next season by January

Hadn't earned it because they had vets ahead of him and wasn't given much of a shot. I think he should probably be the first true big after Gobert and Favors ahead of Udoh and Jerebko. He's looked good

I'd expect Bolomboy and O'Neale to get significant time on national TV tonight.

That's always been somewhat speculated: how sure were the Jazz that Williams wasn't going to stay with the Jazz when he became a free agent in 2012? Apparently, they "may have" had word from the man himself.

Interesting. They still took the 2nd offer on the table from the only team that knew he was available instead of looking for the best offer. :facepalm

they're still benefiting from the original deal: Derrick Favors is still the starting power forward for the Jazz, and while they didn't keep Enes Kanter (who was selected with one of the picks they received in the deal), the pick they received from Oklahoma City in the Kanter deal was used to acquire Ricky Rubio this summer.

star?

With Hood now playing alongside Ricky Rubio, one can only help but wonder whether or not he has a legitimate chance to shoot 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Wouldn't count on it. If he was coming off the bench like he should be maybe

The Jazz finished tied with the Washington Wizards for eighth in 3-point field goal percentage this past year, and should they seek to do so again with Hayward and George Hill gone, then it will likely fall upon shooters such as Joe Johnson and Hood to put together career-best shooting clips from downtown for the second straight season.

Be lucky if they are only 8th from the bottom.

Even the Jazz, who lost Gordon Hayward and George Hill, can talk themselves into believing that a leap from Rudy Gobert, a Donovan Mitchell breakout and playing Moneyball might lead them to not missing a beat.

In such an intense and thickly contested race, a bad 14 days to start the season could put the Jazz behind the pack in a race where it looks especially difficult to make up ground.

They have to win a lot in October/November because December will kill them! If they come in to January anywhere near .500 overall they will have done well.

Not only did Burks take fewer kamikaze attempts at the rim, but his play was deliberate and intentional; not slow but under control, speed guided by firm decision making. This produced results.

The kamikaze attempts at the rim used to produce results too. They've neutered him

Can Rubio make the Jazz's defense even better this season?

He might make it worse with all his bricks

But that means the Jazz have to make a tough decision: Will they waive Joel Bolomboy or Royce O'Neale? Both have guaranteed contracts for this upcoming season, so the Jazz will have to eat money no matter what they do.

Bolomboy's is partial though I guess it could possibly be for more money still?

Quin Snyder's system in the half court is difficult enough to defend for all 24 seconds that teams will fall asleep and allow for some open looks,

They're going to have open looks all night. Teams will leave several guys open and dare them to hurt them

The defense, though, will be elite. Last year, the Jazz were third on that end of the floor, and they should be better this year.

Except for the crappy offense will make it tougher for the D. That was the big thing we heard all last year was being connected at both ends. Good luck with that!

All in all, it'll be enough to get them 45 wins and into the playoffs.

November: 15 games (9 home, 6 away)

December: 15 games (6 home, 9 away)

February: 11 games (6 home, 5 away)

March: 15 games (8 home, 7 away)

9-6

April: 6 games (3 home, 3 away)

To replace Gordon Hayward, they needed wing depth, long-armed defenders.

needed shooters too

By the time Hayward made the decision to leave the Jazz for the Boston Celtics, that market looked more like a scrap heap.

Please tell me who they were going to get if they knew from day 1? Every name we heard was still available except Gallinari and if they'd really wanted him they could have still offered him more than the Clippers and changed his mind. They didn't. They went the cheap route and are building for next season or the one after. Please stop making excuses!

The result is a deep roster, an athletic roster, and a roster full of defenders on the perimeter and in the paint.

Not sure I would call them athletic. Compared to the average Jazz team maybe. Compared to the average NBA probably not

get well soon!

The Stars also traded the rights to Tyrone Wallace to the Agua Caliente Clippers for the returning player rights to Aaron Craft and a 2018 second round draft pick.

Craft is pretty good if he plays for them

I thought one think Ingles said stood out Saturday. "I think our depth this year is really good. Probably the best we've had in the last three years since I've been here."

That's saying a lot! After all, at the beginning of the season, the Jazz were rated as having the No. 1 bench in the NBA last year. While it didn't turn out quite as good as that during the season itself, a lot of the blame for that goes to injuries.

But most of it goes to them not being deep

And it was also interesting how Ingles said the Jazz may want to use their bench. "We've got the potential to play all of our guys at different points," Ingles said. "The way we want to play and get up and down the floor, we can sub and get guys in and out and play at a pretty high level for most of the game."

What we could be seeing is a trend towards using a European-style substitution pattern, trying to get guys at 100 percent during their whole stretch on the floor. Snyder, after all, studied Euroleague substitution patterns during his time in Russia, according to this Vice article.

"Everyone who comes in the game has to defend at a high level with intensity, running when they need to run, screening when they need to screen," Snyder said. "Even if it's not heavy minutes, that's how you gain an advantage."

Be nice. Only a few guys should play heavy minutes. Let the others play hard when they are in there

Now, probably the most likely outcome is that the Jazz end up using a pretty standard American substitution pattern, but one in which they're not actively trying to pull bench players as quickly as possible for their starter replacements. Snyder's done a good job of avoiding full-scale hockey-style subs, and that's still going to be the case here.

Doesn't have much choice since Favors has to come out early. Hood should be on the bench anyway. Mitchell should start

Cut to this preseason and the Utah Jazz boasted an offensive rating of 110.0, an improvement of 10.9 points per 100 possessions. Now the Utah Jazz had a healthy squad and played an NBL team, a team from Euroleague, the Phoenix Suns, and Los Angeles Lakers, not exactly the toughest of competition, but this was supposed to be an anemic offense. If there would be teams that could take advantage of a supposedly league worst offense it would be those bottom feeders and international teams. Instead Utah feasted and looked like a far superior team.

they didn't look far superior to the lowly Lakers though

Quin Snyder was part of the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff that turned a bunch of role players into a highly efficient offensive machine due to their depth and discipline. Looking back on that team they had high quality role players and undervalued players who were stars but generally overlooked. Could this Utah team be the rebirth of that anomaly?

Hawks had shooters and better overall talent

But will the Jazz be a bottom 10 offense in the league? Most likely not.

why is it not likely? Seems very likely to me

Mitchell needs to start and be featured with Rudy
What do you expect out of Mitchell this year? I think he'll be good defensively, but subpar offensively until February when he starts to figure it out. I would like it if he starts, but the Jazz are going to play Hood/Ingles more than they should. If one gets injured then he'll get his shot, with Hood that seems probable

can we really count on a rookie in Donovan Mitchell to be a go-to scorer?

not sure you can count on anyone but Mitchell is one of 6 guys that should be doing most of the scoring
