Favors holds the key to the Jazz making the playoffs. If he can live up to his enormous talent and play at least 70 games, the Jazz could be the surprise team in the West.

They'e in trouble. He's a bad fit and won't even be playing down the stretch. He will be gone by the all-star game

The same can be said of Rodney Hood. But until the shooting guard can find some consistency, he will be nothing more than a tease.

He was consistent last year until he got the flu. He's just not the go to guy they think he is. He's a 6th man and should be gone before the all-star break too if they really think he's getting the kind of money that's being talked about

[QUOTE]In Rubio, who spent his first six seasons with Minnesota, the Jazz have a pass-first point guard capable of getting his teammates good shots. But he

The Jazz have never been worse than 15th at defense under Quin Snyder, and that won't change with the current roster.

What were they before Rudy emerged in early 2014 though? I'd guess near the worst in the league

The Jazz are stocked with good defenders. Rubio is one of the best point guard defenders in the league, with length and quickness. Rodney Hood has strength. Joe Ingles practically has savviness pouring from his armpits. Joe Johnson knows every trick in the book and is tough as nails.

Hood and Johnson?

That, honestly, will win them 30 games right off the bat, just by being an elite defensive team.

I see about 30 wins total on their schedule

The Jazz need Hood to make the leap this season. Hood will have every opportunity to recapture the kind of explosive season he showed two years ago. Healthy and with a bigger role, Hood will be set up to succeed. He'll have a great passing point guard in Rubio to find him when he's open, and possessions to handle the ball in the pick and roll.

needs the ball in his hands. 6th man

Mitchell was a steal for the Jazz when they traded up to get him last June. He's strong and capable as a scorer. The question will be if he gets minutes.

he better. 2nd best player on the team

It took a stacked team to reach the 5th seed last year.

stacked? If they were stacked Hayward stays

The Jazz just need to be the team that doesn't fall apart or suffer injuries (which has been a problem for them over the last few years). Let Denver and Portland crack under the pressure, win those division games, beat the teams they're better than (most of the East) and the organization has maintained stability they can work with.

good luck

That has to be the goal.

The goal should be to start building around Rudy and Mitchell and see who fits around them and move the rest for whatever you can get

Ricky Rubio and Rodney Hood all but locked in as the starters in the backcourt, Mitchell is fighting for time with Dante Exum, Alec Burks, Raul Neto, Joe Ingles and to a lesser extent, Joe Johnson and Thabo Sefolosha.

Let's hope Hood is benched and Michell starts. He shouldn't be fighting anyone for time

Udoh was a plus-minus genius in his last season in the NBA, with the Clippers, and he's only gotten better. At $3.3 million per year for the next two, he's a steal.

Doesn't make much sense to me to play 3 centers though. Once Favors is moved he'll make a lot more sense. He looked good with 4 plamakers around him and not another big. Still think Bolomboy should have ben in the mix before him though

The question tonight was this: What happens when a great defensive team plays a great offensive team?

or maybe a bigger question a crappy offense against a crappy D

The Jazz got great offensive balance tonight. Rudy Gobert led the Jazz with 18 points, Burks had 16, Favors had 14, Johnson had 13, Ingles had 11, Mitchell had 10, Rubio had 9 and Sefolosha had 7 points.

and no sign of the go to guy

Rodney Hood was announced as a starter and was then unable to play due to gastric distress which forced rookie Donovan Mitchell into the starting lineup. Hood never got going and the Jazz were a -13 when he was on the floor. Hood went 2 of 4 from the field in 27 minutes.

The Jazz starters need to be able to play the opposing teams starters at least to a standstill, and then their bench will have a good chance to not only break even, but increase leads for the Jazz.

That's what I'm thinking. Starters keep it close with D and let the bench win games. Burks or Sefolosha to start instead of Hood though!

But Joe Ingles, instead of shooting the three, drove and had the ball stripped to almost conclude the contest.

It wasn't his shot. He's more of a catch and shoot guy than dribbling and taking one in traffic. Joe Johnson or Burks who of course wasn't even in the game should have been getting it

a calf strain should allow him to return this year.

ya think?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Snyder give the gig to Sefolosha, to allow him to have the biggest impact defending one of Oklahoma City's stars.

Probably. He's looked good. He just can't shoot! I'd start Burks and let him do his thing. They've neutered him. I could see O'Neale too,

"I've got you out there to shoot the ball."

He's certainly not out there for any other reason

In order for the Jazz to avoid stalling their offense, they need their best shooters to shoot open shots.

They will be forced more often than not for their worst shooters to shoot open shots. Rubio certainly hasn't been shy. Anyone still think Favors can become a 3 point threat? He clanked one as bad as Rubio! He has extended his range a bit though

Utah announced Saturday afternoon that starting guard Rodney Hood will be out with a calf strain suffered the previous evening against the Minnesota Timberwolves. That likely puts Sefolosha, who started 42 games for the Atlanta Hawks last year, in line to start his first game with the Jazz.

Oklahoma City might have had the best offseason in the NBA this summer when they added Carmelo Anthony and Paul George to their squad, only giving up Victor Oladipo, Domantas Sabonis, Doug McDermott, and Enes Kanter in the process.

looking like they gave up way too much to me. Carmelo sucks!

The Jazz outscored the Thunder by 14 points while PG-13 was on the floor. That's especially surprising because rookie Donovan Mitchell guarded George for long stretches of the game.

What is surprising about it? Mitchell can play!

It's going to be impossible for the Jazz to play this well defensively all season long.

Why? They should keep getting better

His shot was also not at its best, shooting only 5-14 and 2-8 from three.

sadly that is a typical night for him

you look at Rubio's plus-minus tonight, and he had the best of any player in the game, a +13. Why?

because he plays with their best players most of the game?

Rubio spends the entire time looking in one direction, knowing he'll find Thabo Sefolosha in the corner for the wide open three (which missed, but still, great look).

of course it was a great look. I think he's been wide open for every 3 he shot this year. That's what the defense wants.

If Rubio had looked at Sefolosha sooner, the OKC defense would have swapped over and guarded the strong side, but Rubio changed which side was the strong side just by using his eyes.

They would have still left him open as D's will all year long. Guard Johnson Gobert or Thabo for 3? Easy choice there!

Rubio led the Jazz in minutes with nearly 37, probably more than Snyder would like. But Rubio's court vision and smarts played a big role in the Jazz's win, Snyder had to stay on the floor.

It was a blowout. He certainly didn't have to play that much. He just doesn't like Neto and Burks!

"Ekpe knows who he is as a player. He can defend. I think he's gotten more efficient offensively, where he doesn't take any bad shots," Snyder said. "He knows who he is, and I mean that in a complementary way. He really gravitates to the things that he does well."

That's why he won the backup big man spot, despite most observers thinking Jonas Jerebko would be that player after the two were signed nearly simultaneously this summer.

most people seemed to think both would be playing and Johnson would move back to the 4 despite Johnson playing his best at the 4 last year. I don't think Ekpe should play as long as Favors is on the team. Their spacing sucks! Bolomboy should be playing ahead of both. :banghead:

It kind of reminds me of Ingles, who came to the NBA from the Euroleague and started his time with the Jazz as the 15th man.

He's played almost every game since he joined. Was never the 15th man

Udoh is playing a bigger role than expected, just three games into his first season with the Jazz. And it's all because he took a good piece of advice from Socrates.

He's the back-up center which is what most expected :coleman:

Joe Johnson and Derrick Favors also scored in double figures, helping offset the absence of injured Rodney Hood. Rookie Donovan Mitchell managed a team-best six assists.

Not sure they win so easily with Hood playing. He's a one trick pony

Ingles taking good looks is something head coach Quin Snyder has emphasized,

Well duh he's one of only a few guys that can actually hit them. Defenses are going to stop giving him open looks

[QUOTE]While Ingles and Rodney Hood (who did not play Saturday after suffering a leg strain against the Timberwolves) are the primary players Snyder is looking to for outside shooting, the coach said Saturday that he wants to see the rest of his team be aggressive from behind the 3-point line.

As a team, Utah shot 9 of 29 on Saturday and is 27 of 75 on the season thus far.

Favors needs to play the four and quit this business of being the back up Center. I know there is a minutes problem but work it out another way. Burks should start with Hood out. Mitchell needs to learn with the second unit.

Favors needs to play the 5 as much as possible until he is traded. Their spacing sucks. They look best with a big and 4 playmakers around him.

Burks should start even when Hood comes back but he might just end up out of the rotation. Pretty clear that the coach doesn't care for him or Neto

Don't have much choice. Maybe they can stay in the race until they can move Favors and Hood for a starting stretch 4? I guess if you could trade them at all would be ok. Move Jerebko to the starting 4 or Sefolosha.

Who wins this match-up?

Gobert gets the edge in this one. The Jazz already appear to have integrated their new pieces nicely into their lineup, and the Rubio to Gobert connection is only looking better and better. Gobert has always appeared to raise his level of competition when facing off against All-star bigs, and I expect that he will look to prove that he is the better player in this match-up.

NEXT: 10/24 Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers: Keys to the Game
I expect the Jazz to get the victory as the Clippers struggle in their first real challenge of the season, and Gobert is going to be the difference maker in this one.

Although the Clippers were once a tough match-up for Utah, the Jazz proved their mettle against them in the postseason last year, and two of their Achilles heels, Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford, are no longer a part of the team.

the difference in the post season over the regular season was Hayward playing at a new level though. He's gone btw!

It’s not easy for a small-market franchise to replace its only All-Star.

easier when you have an all-NBA player :facepalm

They don’t have any weak defenders.

Rubio will thread passes through windows so narrow they might as well not exist. There’s a trade-off to giving him the keys to the offense. The Jazz have gone from tied for 12th in the league in turnovers last season (13.6) to 27th (17.7). One of the big questions this season is how they can create enough space in the half court to survive.

the turnovers are from a lack of space

With the exception of Rubio and their big men, everyone in their rotation can shoot 3s.

They can all shoot them few can make them

After playing in only 100 games the past three seasons because of injuries, Burks is a forgotten man around the league. A 2011 lottery pick, Burks is an athletic wing with the length (6-foot-6 and 214 pounds) and shooting ability to score from every area of the floor. Hood is even bigger (6-foot-8 and 206 pounds) and a better shooter

Burks is forgotten in Utah and is a better shooter than Hood

It's a make or miss league. During that initial stretch especially, the Jazz had three really good looks from downtown, but missed all three. Meanwhile, the Clippers had Patrick Beverley make a relatively guarded look in transition. Honestly, this is probably the biggest reason.

Will be a problem all year especially until they move Favors. With Hood out and Ingles ailing and Burks having an off night what's left? Johnson?

but with Rodney Hood out and Ingles sick, the Jazz lost their two best shotmakers

Hood is not better than Burks or Johnson!

With regards to big men in the open floor, it's something that Jazz head coach Quin Snyder will need to keep an eye on when they play both Favors and Gobert together. If there's a lineup that an opponent is playing that has a big man who is comfortable running the floor and finishing in traffic, then the Jazz need to be extra cautious about where Gobert and Favors are during offensive possessions.

need to move Favors. Even if Udoh wasn't so good he has to go. Even one more shooter on the floor would make a difference

"I just don't like losing, to be honest," Mitchell said after the game. "We were down by 19 and something clicked in my mind."

Love the kid! Him and Rudy will be special together soon enough

The obvious solution to this is Rodney Hood returning. Hood gets the majority of the shooting guard minutes, Mitchell goes into a backup scorer role where his defensive feistiness matches the tenor of the rest of the second unit, and Burks comes off the bench in a pinch. But it's stretches like Burks' first quarter, when he went 1-6 from the field with two bad turnovers, that make it understandable why Snyder chooses to go with guys like Raul Neto or Royce O'Neale at times.

Could we quit overrating Hood. Burks brings a lot more to the floor despite his faults. Start him and see what happens.

Doubt they think about it. Something for the fans to bitch about
A team without a true No. 1 option is going to have those stretches. It’s inevitable. But the Jazz need to limit them as much as they can. They can’t go half a quarter scoring 2 points and giving up 18-2 runs. Find the open man and hit the open shot, fellas.

The Jazz were thoroughly outclassed by the Phoenix Suns, who are an awful basketball team that just had their best player say "I Dont wanna be here" and get dismissed from the team in a tweet this past weekend.

They didn't look awful. They moved the ball. Got after the Jazz. Hit shots. Maybe the Jazz are just awful? Bledsoe might wish he was with the team now

Ricky Rubio had seven of those turnovers, and honestly, he's been super loose with the ball so far this season. He's turning the ball over more than any point guard in the league.

Can you be critical of the Jazz's new all-star?

Part of the problem was that the Jazz just repeatedly ignored the open looks they could take in exchange for ill-advised forays to the rim, which immediately resulted in turnovers.

Which again comes down to the lack of shooters that can hit an open look

But the Jazz need to figure this out quickly: it's the number one issue holding back an offense that can't afford to be this wasteful.

The number one issue is lack of shooting. Favors has to go at the very least. Space the floor and there will be passing lanes and less turnovers. I imagine it will be a problem all year

The Jazz also allowed the Suns to get 16 offensive rebounds to a team that was second-to-last in offensive rebounding so far this season. Especially when they're playing two bigs most of the time, that just can't happen.

Burks rebounds. Too bad the coach doesn't like him

Ekpe Udoh has had a great season, until tonight. He gotten beaten on the boards over and over again by Len, and ended up with just one rebound himself.

not a good defensive rebounder

"16 offensive rebounds, and 24 turnovers — the fact that we were in the game even — to gift a team 40 possessions, you'd have to have a monumental shooting night to overcome that."

Monumental for the Jazz might be 33%!

their bench didn't get a bucket until late in the third quarter, and in general, everyone (save perhaps Rodney Hood and Derrick Favors) was awful.

their best scorer was benched. Hood wasn't that good. He scored. Not efficiently. Did little else. 6th man

Joe Johnson gets the ball after a screen, and has a wide-open look where neither of his defenders are within six feet.

He turns that down, and instead goes into posting up Dragan Bender to get a midrange turnaround fadeaway airball off. While it didn't count as a turnover, it might as well be one.

He'd just missed one from the same spot is what I fugured

You just can’t turn down open shots, and especially our team.”

The problem is that teams are leaving guys open because most of the team can't shoot. One of the few guys that can was benched! :wtf:

The Jazz's offense is designed to get those kinds of shots, as well as shots at the rim. When one category isn't falling, it becomes a lot easier just to pack the paint.

Mitchell leads the way in 3-point attempts. In the last two games, he's 3-11. Joe Ingles is a reasonable 3-9, but Rodney Hood is just 2-7, and Ricky Rubio (1-6) and Alec Burks (1-5) aren't helping matters. Joe Johnson, surprisingly, has gone 0-3 from downtown over the last two games. In other words, it's hard to pin the blame on anyone; it's the whole team.

big surprise

If Gobert's going to be the face of the franchise, then he needs to put his stamp on the game in a more consistent way.

Rudy is still an elite force when finishing out of the pick-and-roll. After finishing in the 95th percentile last year with 1.38 points on those possession, he’s at 1.41 right now, better than 87.5 percent of guys who regularly finish that way2.

But he’s not getting the ball as often as he’d like, or frankly, as much as people thought he would in Utah’s retooled offense.

Why is any of this surprising people? I predicted it. One look at the roster told you there would be little spacing and Rudy would have a tough time and that most of the team would be left wide open because they can't shoot :confusedshrug:

Rubio isn’t the same pull-up threat that last season’s primary P&R orchestrators were, so teams are able to guard more aggressively against the pass. We first saw Minnesota employee the strategy, gluing bodies to Gobert on every roll, and then the Clippers picked up that template in Tuesday night’s win.

Why Denver didn't is the question? It was obvious going into the season that you should cover Ingles and leave the other starters open unless they got hot. Now Burks isn't even playing so it got even easier to guard their bench where the shooting should be a little better with Johnson and Burks. Imagine if Exum was also in there clanking shots hard off the backboard! :rant

This is the kind of aggressive scheming Gobert should get used to now. He should almost take it as a complement that defenses now are primarily focused on not letting him catch the ball going toward the basket. But it’s also something he and the Jazz’s playmakers will need to adjust to.

He did with the free throw jumper. It looked good. If he can start hitting that with some consistency it will help. Favors has to go. That much is clear and has been clear for a long time. Rubio, Sefolosha and Udoh just made it even more clear

There are a couple of ways to counter this. The most obvious is for Rubio to punish the defensive conservatism by hitting pull-up shots. He had eight straight points that way on Tuesday in L.A., then hit double figures the next night in Phoenix, largely by doing the same thing.

But they are mid range shots. The defense would rather he hit those than Ingles draining 3's. You can't trade 3's for 2's. It's exactly what BYU has been talking about. That was one of their problems last year

Those are some ways they can do it, but the bottom line is that teams are going to guard his rim dives very differently now than they did a year ago.

That's why Hill was perfect for the team. When they moved Johnson to the four before the all-star break they really looked good. Either Gobert was free going to the rim or else someone else had a good shot on the perimeter. How Lindsey is thought of as a wizard for this mess of a roster is beyond me. Blame Hayward instead!

The good news is, Gobert is wired in such a way that he won’t be satisfied with any of this stuff. His unrelenting competitiveness will force him to find ways to impact games. The sooner he does, the sooner the Jazz will be able to wield the top-10 weapon Lindsey and others foretold.

The roster has to change regardless. Favors certainly has to go even if it's for a bag of chips. I can see others staying possibly. Hopefully Mitchell will start hitting shots. Johnson isn't done. Neto starts shooting like he did as a rookie again. Burks gets to play. Maybe Jonas gets to play. Maybe O'Neale shows he can hit shots in a real game. Maybe Bolomboy gets to... oh yeah! :rant

https://thejnotes.com/2017/10/26/utah-jazz-injuries-pose-difficult-question/

Dante Exum may just be a player prone to injury. It is frustrating to say, however it might be reality.

My bigger concern: are the Jazz trying to build a contender with a group of players who are prone to injuries? Upon learning Exum was going to miss the entire 2017-18 season my immediate thought was, “can a Derrick Favors back injury or an Alec Burks knee injury be far behind?

Two games into the new season, Rodney Hood is carried off the floor in Minnesota. Hood and Karl-Anthony Towns bumped legs. Hood would miss two games with some sort of calf strain.

Trying to build a team with guys that are either unproven like Exum or don't fit like Favors. I'm still not convinced Burks is injury prone. He's had two injury's and one he had since college. The other wasn't a wise play by him. He fell on shots to the rim for a long time before breaking his leg. Hood and Favors are certainly injury prone. Just hope they can stay on the court enough to trade them

The Jazz did not agree on a contract extension with Hood prior to the October deadline. How could they? Rodney cannot stay healthy.

How could they if it's really going to take at least 15-18 million a year for a one trick pony! :wtf:

The same is true of Favors, Burks and, of course, Exum.

Favors has to go because of Rudy regardlesss. Exum I can see paying on potential but how much for someone that has not proven he is worth more than a minimum non guaranteed deal if that? I certainly would have cut him instead of Bolomboy

I cannot be the only fan who nervously watches each game wondering which key Jazz player will go down next. Every time a player doesn’t play, I will ask stupid questions like, “Is our training staff as good as it should be? Could the coaching staff be the problem?”

The Suns are known for their training staff so I would hope it's gotten better. Exum was bad luck. Hood's injury was minor. People get sick

The dumbest of all — “Does Dennis Lindsey and his talent evaluating staff have a secret affinity for fragile players?

Maybe long players are more prone to injury. That seems to be the only thing they look at in players

Jazz fans may not be able to boast about Championships. However, the franchise did enjoy two decades of the next best thing. Namely, health to its stars.

The fact that they were healthy makes the franchise look even worse for not winning during those 2 decades

One week into his NBA career, however, the Donovan Mitchell Hype Train has slowed down considerably, as the youngster has gotten off to a very up-and-down start.

I'm as excited about him as ever. The 15 point 4th quarter is the most exciting thing to happen to the Jazz since Rudy emergence almost 3 years ago! It's just a matter of time for the kid

Most notably, having appeared during summer league to be a dynamic player who could score at the basket, make midrange jumpers and connect from behind the 3-point line, he has struggled in all three areas.

He is their most dynamic player outside Burks despite that. He playd D, hits the boards, blocks shots, etc.

An aggressive driver, Mitchell has often either approached the basket out of control, or once he gets to the basket, has gotten stymied by bigger defenders. This calls to mind much of what Dante Exum has experienced through his first few years in the NBA. Both players are athletic enough to get to the basket, but just need to learn how to do so with more control and then learn how to negotiate around better defenders than they have faced at previous levels.

He's nothing like Exum. Mitchell has all the tools. Exum is just an athlete

But what's been surprising about the performance is the ways in which the Jazz have been bad: it's not so much that the Jazz are struggling to hit shots due to lack of talent.

Instead, they're playing carelessly, turning over the ball as much as any team in the league (they're 29th).

lack of spacing. Not really surprising

there have been a couple of disappointing performances from players who were expected to make a bigger impact: Gobert and rookie Donovan Mitchell.

put a bad team around Gobert. What do you expect? Mitchell is a rook. Expecting too much from players.

It's so strange that the Jazz have been a bad rebounding team given that they start Gobert and Derrick Favors, who have been two of the best rebounders at their position for their careers.

Favors hasn't

And the bench is pretty solid as well, led by Ekpe Udoh, who was excellent through four games.

not a good defensive rebounder

The struggles have been a surprise, given Mitchell's excellent summer league and preseason.

after a game like tonight's, you understand why the Jazz were and are so high on him.

Saw it from the first summer league game and through all his struggles. Some guys can just play and others like Exum and Burke can't

What changed for Mitchell? Well, he says it was a mental thing.

You can see that. Once he gets going he gets confident and is unstoppable. Same thing that happens to Rudy

The Jazz don't really have any elite finishers at the rim when somewhat guarded.

Mitchell will be

And the Jazz are a good team to do it against, too. Their best players at attacking switches are probably Alec Burks and Mitchell, but Burks is still in a funk as far as finishing at the rim.

He'd have to play to be in a funk wouldn't he? They've got him thinking too much. Need to just let him play his game and do his thing. They need it

Hood can do it a little bit, but he shies away from contact, making his finishes hard and rarely getting him to the line.

But he's the new Hayward! :lol

"We either have to drive the ball, or pull up and shoot a three if they back up, and do it with confidence."

You don't have shooters or finishers though. At least they can defend!

Went to the Stars game last night. Hardly anyone there with the Jazz playing. Steve Brown was. Bradley started out good by hitting a 3 but couldn't make anything after mostly near the rim. Also had 5 fouls. I think he was easily the biggest guy out there and the youngest too. His family was there as well.

Wolters looked pretty good. Has a nice floater. Griffin had a big break away dunk but didn't look that great otherwise. Where was O'Neale? Naz Long shot almost every time he got it. Wasn't that impressed. Cousins was the same coming off the bench. I think he was one of the top guys in the league last year? He had a pretty good offensive game. Not much from Jermaine Taylor. The big kid the Jazz signed for the stars looked good for an undersized PF. Braun hit some 3's. They played it like a real game. Was a close one until an 8-0 run to start the 4th by the Clippers squad.

Wallace has gotten bigger. He finished a few times. Shot nothing from deep though. Some of his old teammates on the bench were giving him a hard time I think!

The gold standard for filling the box score is a 5 X 5, made famous by Hakeem Olajuwon and Andrei Kirilenko. It's when a player has at least five points, five rebounds, five assists, five blocks and five steals. Tonight, Gobert came close, finishing with 17 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six blocks. He came up short in the steals category, adding only two.

2 steals is not close to 5. :wtf:

Gobert, who is now shooting 72 percent from the charity stripe for the season.

If he can shoot in the high 60's to low 70's that would be great

When Gobert plays like this, the Jazz are nearly impossible to beat.

More like if the team around him hi3's Gobert can play like that. Doesn't hurt that it was Dallas either!

Did you know that Ricky Rubio leads the Jazz in field goal attempts per game this season? Yes, he's averaging 12.6 per contest this year, more than Rodney Hood, Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert, or even the prolific Donovan Mitchell.

Good luck going to the playoffs like that!

They're also just such open shots. Of the 58 jump shots that Rubio took coming into tonight's game, he took only 10 that had a defender within four feet. 48 of them were either open or wide open, per NBA.com.

Of course. I'm sure Sefolosha, Mitchell and Favors all have similar numbers

Sefolosha has quietly become what Joe Ingles was for the Jazz prior to his elevation to the staring lineup: Quin Snyder’s human duct tape. While typically deployed as a wing stopper, tonight the ultra-long veteran closed out competitive play in the fourth quarter at the power forward. With Sefolosha at the four, Utah is scary good at switching, which prevented Dallas from driving their offense with Dirk Nowitzki flaring out for threes of the screen.

the 4 is where he belongs once Favors is gone and Johnson is benched because he has sucked. Also shut down Barea!

Harrison Barnes’ plus-minus for the game. He was practically invisible, not scoring until 2:00 minutes left in the second quarter and finishing the night with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist. He shot 3 of 11 from the field and missed both of his three point attempts. That contract Dallas cut him is looking a lot like a desperate move by a desperate team.

He was really good last year. If Smith develops they could have a pretty good young core. Dallas is a franchise that guys want to play for too

It’s worth remembering that Favors and Gobert are still only 26 and 25 respectively. If they each use this year stretching their range with enough effectiveness to build on that in future seasons – much like the progression of Paul Millsap – the duo may go from a non-shooting pairing to respectable marksmen for their positions.

Millsap was good from 3 as soon as he was with a franchise that let him shoot them. Favors has never been consistent from the mid range so I would hold out hope for him and it will be with another team if he does become prolific anyway. His corner 3 has looked decent so far though and he has extended his range a bit this year. Rudy just needs confidence to do anything it seems and he's getting it from the mid range now it appears

Jeff Withey took a three! On purpose!

He was supposedly working on the corner 3 last year though we never saw it. This one was ugly!
One trait I noticed about Gordon Hayward was that he was equally good on the road as he was at home–there was not any noticeable drop off. That is often what makes an NBA player into a superstar (playing well on the road), because most NBA players play much better at home than on the road. I think that is one thing that the Jazz are really missing about Gordon Hayward so far this season.

Superstar? The one thing?

As for the bigs’ shooting, Draymond Green has only had one season where he shot above 44% from the field or 34% from three. If Gobert and Favors can hit those marks from their own respective long ranges, and I think they can, that’s enough to create some gravity and warp how defenses can guard the Jazz.

Golden State can live with it because of all the other shooters and superstars on the team which the Jazz don't have

1. Favors, Gobert, Hood, Ingles, Rubio - 45 minutes or 19% of minutes (89.5 offensive rating; 105.1 defensive rating; net rating of -15.6)

Hood to the bench and Favors traded would help the starters

I need to give this new group and coach Snyder time. The tinkering will decrease and the rotations will become more fixed than they are now as the year goes on.

The problem is the roster will look much different by the break or at least it better be!

I'm thinking they need to go get a starting wing for at least the short term and maybe a starting stretch 4 though I think Sefolosha could maybe fill that spot along with Jonas off the bench. Favors has to go. Johnson if he doesn't start hitting shots needs to be bought out because he won't be able to be traded. Hood needs to go if he's really going to get the kind of money they are talking. Burks needs to go to a team that will let him play his game. He's too good to be shackled. Not sure if they can fill their needs with those guys but it will at least be a start going into next season.

Ekpe has been a force on the defensive end and has proven to be a big piece of what the Jazz are doing. He moves his feet like a guard, challenges everything at the rim, and has rebounded very well.

He sucks on the defensive glass. Could we quit writing otherwise?

Rodney Hood was 0 for 11 two days after scoring a season-high 25 points. He was benched down the stretch.

Benched him quickly the last time. That was the difference in the game. Could we stop calling him the go-to guy already now and send him to the bench where he can excel in the role he was built for instead of trying to make him into something he's not. Just start Mitchell!

He was good. Another shooter on the floor certainly didn't hurt and he plays hard.

Ricky Rubio, who hit a not-at-all open transition pull-up three that he's never hit in his life at the NBA level.

and may never hit again

Rubio found Joe Ingles, who had an open 3-point look but passed it over to Sefolosha, who made the three tying the game.

Amazing how Thabo is always left wide open. I thought Ingles should have shot

With Rodney Hood really playing himself out of the game with missed shots (0 points, 0-11), the Jazz needed Mitchell to step up, and he did.

They need him to step up because he will be the go to guy in time

Mitchell is playing the exact opposite as Dante Exum, the Jazz's last lottery guard prospect, did as a rookie. Whereas Exum played very controlled, hesitant, and afraid to make mistakes, Mitchell is being incredibly aggressive, for both good and bad. Exum was a scared puppy, and Mitchell is a hyper puppy.

Mitchell balls. Exum has yet to show he can at this level but we'll keep hearing about how much they miss his greatness!

Another twosome to focus on: the bench duo of Jonas Jerebko and Sefolosha. Both came off the bench and played big roles in the Jazz win.

Really like Thabo. His shooting is the only problem. He's the 2nd best rebounder on the team.

I'm less of a fan of the shots he took. Hood is at his best when he's getting 3-point shots, but tonight, he only took one three and ten twos.

He's best from 2. His problem is he doesn't like contact so he doesn't try to get to the rim and draw fouls which might get him some easy free throws that might get him going

I think the biggest thing it shows, though, is that Hood is probably best referred to as a shooter, not necessarily a scorer.

I'd call him a scorer not a shooter

It's just probably time to realize that Hood's most likely outcome is as a shooter in the J.R. Smith mold, not a scorer in the Gordon Hayward mold.

Hayward wasn't really a scorer until the past couple years. He's a ball player. Smith is 3 and D. Hood is a 6th man. Hopefully the Jazz realize this soon

Hood is averaging a dismal 1.9 free throw attempts per game. To me, this is the key for him to turn the corner on being a number one option. We saw this from Hayward, especially last season, but we have yet to see it from Rodney.

I don't expect it to happen. Hayward transformed his body to take the punishment. Hood Looks like he's been ran over if he draws contact. Oh where oh where has little Burks gone. Oh where o where can he be? :rant

In allowing a season high for points, the Jazz struggled in doing what they do best. "Well, it wasn't the best defensive effort. That's got to be there for us," Snyder said. "A lot of individual breakdowns where guys were getting beat put us in some compromising positions and they were able to score. We're not going to win if we don't play defense better than that."

it's a loss that's hard to be too mad about.

Easy to get mad about Hood playing 35 minutes and sucking while Sefolosha, Burks, Neto and Royce were available.

That's eight straight possessions which either ended in a Mitchell shot or started with a Mitchell steal. No other Jazz player is capable of a stretch like that, and he's less than 10 games into his rookie season.

Burks could be if they unleashed him :rant

And about guarding DeRozan, "Now I've got to watch how he's doing it. Kind of figure out why he's doing it, and kind of figure out how to get his counters. If you cut this off, there's this, or there's this, or there's that. He has about nine or ten years of counters, and I'm just trying to figure it out as I go. It's a great learning experience," Mitchell said.

greatness is coming!

When the Jazz acquired Ricky Rubio this offseason, I think we all imagined the Rubio/Gobert pick and roll to be one of the Jazz's best weapons. Gobert would roll hard to the rim, Rubio would find him with a lob pass, and it'd be easy, right?

I certainly never thought that because they don't have the spacing.

Rodney Hood: There were no hard fouls, no physicality, no nothing. We just let them play so freely

Hood was unusually physical himself actually! Taking a charge and drawing another foul.

Coming into the game, the Jazz were ranked third overall defensively, but this performance moves them all the way to 11th.

surprised they didn't drop after the Toronto game. I hope Lindsey is finally going to do something this year instead of standing pat save the big move for 3rd stringer Mack

Favors is a free agent at the end of the year, and it's clear that his offensive skillset is kind of an awkward fit for the roster. Snyder isn't a fan of post-ups or mid-range shots, and Favors best skills of rolling to the rim and rebounding have been awkward fits next to Gobert at times.

But if he's focused, he's a pretty impressive perimeter defender. He really saved the Jazz's bacon in the first round series against the Clippers last year with Gobert out thanks to that skill. Him adding this 3-point shot to his repertoire would be a big step forward, even if it's probably not enough to make him a stretch big.

Why won't anyone say what seems obvious? He will be traded. Hopefully next month when teams can trade guys that were signed this summer. Would love to see Hood on the bench before he is just dealt. If Rubio keeps it up he has to go as well. Burks needs to go because he is too good for the role they want him to play. Not sure what role that is though! Johnson might have to be a buyout just to open roster space because he looks untradeable at the moment. Could have certainly traded him during the summer though! Might still have Bolomboy as well! :rant

While the Jazz retain his NBA rights, Williams-Goss stars for the KK Partizan NIS team in Serbia. He is averaging 15.3 points, 8.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc and 49.1 percent from the field through six games against ABA League competition. In four EuroCup games, he averages 18.5 points and 5.5 assists. The 6-foot-3 floor general agreed to a two-year deal and guaranteed roster spot in August.

I think it had an out? Maybe he can spend next year with the Stars as insurance behind Mitchell and Neto and some vet? Exum is not a pg!

It does make a certain amount of sense to keep Mitchell in a scoring-deprived second unit.

What about a scoring deprived first unit? Hood starting has never made sense!

And if you do want to start him, the question of "who should be benched?" is a real one. Rodney Hood is already dealing with confidence issues, would he respond well to a move to the bench in a contract year?

No question who needs to be benched. How's he responded to being the go to guy? Him and his agent might not like it but it's where he needs to be and in the long run it might earn him a lot more money playing great off the bench instead of sucking in the starting line-up

The surprise, perhaps, has been Thabo Sefolosha who is averaging the third highest PER on the Jazz at 15.0 while placing third on the team in defensive rebounds and steals.

The top defensive wing in the league is not a surprise. I didn't know he was such a good all around player. Only thing he's missing is a shot. Certainly didn't expect him to be their 2nd best rebounder but didn't expect Favors to not hit the boards either I guess

The Sixers also aren't ruling out playing Jahlil Okafor, who has only played in one game this season due to not being very good at the NBA level. He's seeking a trade or a buyout, but the Sixers think they can get an asset for him on the open market. After all, he was the No. 3 pick in the draft only three years ago. He still hasn't figured out how to be impactful on defense, basically.

Favors should be gone next month. Exum and Hood could be back at the right price and Hood's price keeps going down

I'd love to hear ideas on what your plan would be to take this team to the next level. Who do we draft? Who do we resign, who do we seek out in trades or outside free agency?

Hard to say until we know what the roster looks like after the all-star break. Right now I'd be willing to move everyone that isn't Rudy and Mitchell. Favors has to go. Hood very possibly. Rubio probably should but won't because the Jazz are idiots and I'm not sure anyone else wants him! Burks needs to go somewhere where he can play his game. Neto probably needs to go where he can be appreciated and play his game. Johnson is probably gone because he is old and possibly done. Better bring back a young 4 better than Bolomboy is all I can say! :rant

To become contenders we need the following: Mitchell becomes an All-Star level player, Rubio improves his shooting to league average;

Exum comes back healthy and plays like he did in preseason

The interesting thing about all of the left over O'connor players is they all took almost half their careers to become compatent players. Where as now with Lindsey all the important pieces the Jazz have picked up have develop almost in half that time. Now I know not all have developed as DL picks, namely Lyles, Burke, and Exum, However, Hood was good almost from day one as a floor spacer, Rudy took two years, and now Mitchell could be the final domino.

Kanter was a capable 4th big as a rook including dominating on the glass, Hayward was a rotation player immediately for Sloan. Favors was a good 3rd big. Burks wasn't quite ready. Hood shouldn't have been playing until the end of his rookie year and was older than all of the above. Rudy took a year. He was a solid back-up to start his 2nd year and was their best player by December of that year. Mitchell also older than all of the above not including Hood

you can argue Milsap and Jefferson held him back, however as big a fan of Favors as I am I do not think he was better than those players at the time or now in comparison to the past versions of themselves ( the league as just changed to phase big Al out.).

Al is actually in the role I thought he was made for at that time. Bench. Millsap was always better than Favors. What a joke that they let him go

Gobert isn't the issue.
Their problems are basically two-fold with Gobert on the floor. First off, Utah's turnover issues are substantial. One issue is that because of Rubio's limitation as a scorer with the ball, teams are sniping the pick and roll with Gobert a lot of the time.

But there's also the reverse: not taking good shots. Rodney Hood passed up two layups today for some reason.

because he's soft. He hates contact. He should play in the WNBA

Part of it is that the Jazz's roster just isn't very offensively talented. But I thought they were better than this.

than you haven't been paying attention. The roster is a mess

Raul Neto, why are you playing so far away from Justin Anderson without knowing where he is here?

maybe because he's used to sitting on the bench while his teammates suck?

the Sixers were without their best player

that's debatable but Embiid was more impressive last year against the Jazz

The Jazz started tonight's game rather awfully, allowing the Sixers to get out to a 23-10 start thanks to Rubio's bad shooting, grinding gears offense

imagine that!

[QUOTE]That starting lineup has been really bad all season long: They're being outscored by 11.2 points per 100 possessions. But the same lineup with Mitchell instead of Hood has been outscored by 22 points per 100 possessions. In other words, it doesn't seem like the answer, either.

So what is the answer? I don't think it makes much sense to bench Joe Ingles

Some of that is just because of who shot the ball: Ricky Rubio, Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles and Rodney Hood led the Jazz in shot attempts, and those guys are pretty inconsistent shooters in general.

Ingles is pretty consistent as long as he isn't having to force shots that aren't in his wheelhouse. I think Hood could be in the right role too. I think Mitchell will be

Clayton found that 16 or 17 of the shots were pretty good looks.

I thought so. They were close early.

Gobert had a good point about the shot selection impacting his offensive rebounding, too.

The more I think about it, the more I think this team needs to cash out on Favors.

It is truly too hard for this lineup to function with Gobert, Rubio and Favors all sharing the floor.

who would have thought that that wouldn't work?

who are we going to find to give us a real stretch 4 (someone better than Jerebko) AND a bench scorer for Derrick Favors? Everyone one wants a stretch 4 right now.

And yet the Jazz gave one away. Jerebko/Bolomboy/Sefolosha/Ingles would look a lot better no doubt! I think ideally you get another young 4 to replace Bolomboy when you clean house. Hood, Rubio, Burks, Neto, Johnson also need to go for various reasons.

The Jazz made four baskets in the second half

That's your headline. The Jazz, ostensibly a professional basketball team, made four field goals in the second half of tonight's game. Four shots out of 33, or 12.1 percent.

As you'd expect when you shoot literally 4-of-33, nobody was good.

When is Lindsey held accountable for this mess? Snyder at least finally did something to the rotation that seemed obvious to me

Let's tell the anecdotal side of 4-of-33. Quin Snyder called a timeout with 9:45 left in the third quarter when his team had only just missed three shots in a row. During that timeout, Snyder yelled colorfully at his players. Rudy Gobert reports that Snyder said "Get your (expletive) together," but I also definitely saw him use other phrases going into the timeout.

Can serial killer Snyder light a fire under them or do they need a new voice? Still not up with his complete silence a couple years ago in a time out

Mitchell opened with the game's first four points, and the Jazz had 6-2, 12-8, and 16-11 leads early. Then, Rodney Hood came in with about 6:44 left in the first quarter and made 3-5 in the first and 2-4 in the second. That's just how the Jazz envisioned it playing out.

Me too. Even better was Hood was shooting mid range shots where he's at his best rather than bombing 3's all night which he would do most of the night again

I do think it was impressive how both players reacted to the lineup change. "I'm a team guy. I've always been a team guy," Hood said. "We need a win, so it's not really about anyone individually right now." He was more visibly disappointed when we saw him begin warmups for before the game, but that's a good response from Hood.

It's the role he was made to play. In the long run it's the best spot for him as a player financially and success wise

"The shots I've been taking, that's not who I am. I'm willing to pass. I haven't hit Rudy on a roll to the basket once this year.

"In college it's easy: a guy that's 6-foot-8 can't really jump that high, but you get a guy like Whiteside, you can't throw it over. I have to be able to see what's around me and not just see what's in front of me."

It's great that he understands what he has to do. Just a matter of time before he puts it all together. Put a better roster around him and Rudy in the next few months and we might start to see it

Ricky Rubio isn't good right now

was he ever good is the question?

He can't find Gobert at all, ever. Some of that is because teams are giving Gobert extra attention, but then Rubio has to find the guys who are open as a result.

The only guys open can't shoot either! Ingles isn't getting the shots he did last year. Burks isn't allowed to do his thing(except last night). Who else is there?

But if Rubio is one of the worst players in the league, the Jazz just don't have any chance. They probably have too much invested in the Rubio experiment, though, and have to give him more than 12 games to figure himself out.

They have until next month as far as I'm concerned. The problem is does anyone else want his sorry ass? Maybe bring him off the bench once they put a better team around Rudy and Mitchell if they can't deal him

Derrick Favors appeared in his 435th game with the Jazz on Friday night. That ties him with point guard Howard Eisley for 20th on the franchise list.
