The Cavs now have 13 players under contract heading into training camp, which starts with media day on Sept. 24. They are waiting on restricted free agent Rodney Hood, who is looking at either accepting the Cavs’ one-year, $3.4 million qualifying offer or trying to get them to come up from their three-year offer worth, according to sources, about $7 million annually. Hood is said to be looking for something in the $9 million range annually. – via Cleveland Plain Dealer

You lost a lot of dough asking out! I doubt you ever have anyone that loves you more than Snyder. That's less than Exum who might be the worst player in the whole league!

A longtime member of the Utah Jazz family took his last breath on Saturday. Dedicated team chaplain Jerry Lewis died earlier this afternoon around 1:30 p.m. in St. George from health complications, according to Jazz play-by-play announcer Craig Bolerjack. His wife, Jean, also confirmed the news to the Deseret News. He was 80 years old.

Shams Charania: Restricted free agent Rodney Hood is signing a one-year, $3.4M qualifying offer to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, per league sources. – via Twitter ShamsCharania

Rodney Hood ended his restricted free agency by accepting the Cavaliers’ $3.4 million qualifying offer and placing a bet on himself for a big season this year. He informed the Cavs of his decision today, sources told cleveland.com. – via Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs former general manager David Griffin told cleveland.com’s Wine and Gold podcast that he thought Hood would be the team’s primary scorer late in games — a sign of how valuable a player he could be this season. … The roster now stands at 14 players heading into training camp, which is likely where it will stay. The Cavs’ payroll for this season is now in the $115 million range — which is above the league’s $101 million salary cap but under the $123 million luxury-tax line. – via Cleveland Plain Dealer

Albert Nahmad: Rodney Hood accepts the Cavaliers’ $3.4M qualifying offer (per @JoeVardon). He will have an implicit no-trade clause this season, and will become an unrestricted free agent next summer (at which point Cleveland will have his full Bird rights and a $6.6M cap hold). – via Twitter AlbertNahmad

Adrian Wojnarowski: Cavaliers and Hood explored several sign-and-trade options but Hood’s hopes of an offer sheet or Cavs deal in the $10M-$12M annual range never materialized. – via Twitter wojespn

He bet on himself asking out of Utah already. Cost him 10's of millions!

Utah Jazz: Which player needs to take the biggest leap?

Dante obviously after getting paid based purely on potential

Dante Exum maybe makes the most sense, because of all the players who are likely to get meaningful minutes for the Jazz next season, he is the one who has yet to even come close to maximizing his fullest potential.

Not only that but he's easily the worst player on the team maybe the whole league

I know many Jazz fans have likely lost faith in Exum. It is hard to be patient with a player who was selected fifth overall and has rarely been able to stay on the floor for the Jazz.

My problem isn't with the injuries but the fact that he has sucked yet has played over better players and will again this year

What do the Utah Jazz need to win the 2019 NBA Championship?

New GM, new coach, new owners, shooters instead of Rubio, Favors and Exum.

Golden State may be more vulnerable this year than they typically have been. The depth of their roster looks like it significantly drops off after their starting five. We see a 32-year-old Shaun Livingston, a rookie Jacob Evans, a 34-year-old Andre Iguodala, and a couple promising-but-inexperienced bigs in Kevon Looney and Jordan Bell.

You forgot Jerebko. Great pick-up for them!

Gobert was held out of 26 games due to a pair of knee injuries, and while he was off the floor Utah was nothing short of a disaster. While Rodney Hood was a member of the Jazz, he once again missed some significant time, as did Joe Johnson. And of course Dante Exum was out for all but 14 regular season contests.

If it's the case that Alec Burks is in Quin Snyder's doghouse because he won't make the effort necessary to improve his defense the way Snyder wants him to, and that Burks wants a payday next season, it's questionable, given the salary cap issues throughout the league, that he'll do any better than Hood did.

Yeah it's better to have guys on the floor that suck at offense! :rant

The question needs to be asked - will Burks be waiting for Dennis Lindsey to make him a QO at the end of the season, or somebody else? If Dante Exum, Royce O'Neale, and Ricky Rubio all play well this season (we'll stipulate that Donovan Mitchell will play very well), it's questionable whether Burks would even be playing much this season, given that in order to be traded, he needs to play, and if he doesn't play defense to Snyder's specifications, he won't - unless Snyder shows off Burks to gin up a market for him (while managing to minimize the effect of his lack of defense).

There's been interest in him. He can be traded. He better be bought out if he's not. He's too good to be sitting behind inferior players

Poll question - and I have no idea what will happen, but I'd like to see Burks stay with the Jazz and get a contract for more than the QO...whad'ya think?

I hope he's traded as soon as possible. He doesn't deserve this. Either does Neto or Udoh

And the illogical ones

Instead of bringing in outsiders, no team chemistry was ruined as Favors (two-year, $36 million), Exum (three year, $33 million), and Neto (two-year, $4.4 million) all reached deals within 24 hours apart.

For months before Sloan’s resignation I had heard through media friends that there were issues between Sloan and Deron Williams. The details are no longer important but there was a pattern of disrespect between the young All-Star point guard and his HOF coach. It didn’t take long before rumors started that it was because of Williams that Sloan decided to call it quits. The Jazz were in a bad place. Miller and O’Connor were calling out not only fans but the two-time MVP, Karl Malone for speaking out and not believing the company line of “Sloan being tired” as a reason for his resignation. It got ugly. Please read Moni’s post for a reminder of how bad things really were with the team. It took the team over two years to even admit that there had been strife between Sloan and Williams. The dishonesty from the Jazz in regards to the whole situation caused a divide between the team and its most loyal fans. The years immediately following Sloan’s resignation and Williams’ trade made it difficult to be a Jazz fan. The years passed, O’Connor retired, Ty Corbin was not re-signed and things began to look up for the team.

The had a couple good teams under Corbin despite no Deron and being forced to build around a black hole and than to tank. He never had a shot. It was dark again until December of 2014 when Gobert emerged. Otherwise they'd be the Kings :wtf: :wtf:

Under the leadership of Dennis Lindsey, Quin Snyder, and now Steve Starks, there began to be a different feeling around the team. Fans were no longer disregarded, instead they were valued. The front office and the media no longer had to sell false hope about a bad coach or a middling team. The Jazz were different now, they had one of the smartest coaches in the league who excelled not only in player development but also player relationships. The front office and media no longer felt the need to hide things from fans and were slowly regaining their trust.

All the media does is sell false help. Nothing has changed. Cheap owners. Questionable coaching called great. Bad front office moves called wizardry. Same as it ever was

As a Jazz fan who had heard some of what had happened between Williams and Sloan it has been hard get over what happened between the two of them. It had been hard to truly forgive Williams. I have moved on as most Jazz fans have but there was always something hanging over my fandom. Things have never been the same since 2011. It was almost as if the 2006-2011 Jazz teams did not exist. Highlights of those teams are rarely shared by the team, nor are they mentioned much by the media. In my heart it was also hard to think of those teams and enjoy them knowing how it all ended.

Most fans haven't gotten over it. Just like Fisher and Kanter and now Hayward.

So number 8 will be going up in the rafters soon U take it?

I admittedly was pretty young during the height of the John Stockton and Karl Malone years, so while those guys will always hold a special place in my heart along with the likes of Jeff Hornacek, Bryon Russell and others, my favorite player during my growing-up years in which I actually understood the game of basketball was without a doubt Deron Williams. I imagine the same goes for many of my fellow fans from the same generation.

Haven't gotten the impression that you do know the game though

Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell may very well surpass that at one point in the not-so-distant future, but for now, the Jazz have yet to field a single player as exhilarating as Deron Williams since that bygone era.

Looking at the trade machine the Jazz could make a better run in December when Favors, Exum and Neto could be traded. Add Phoenix to the deal to take Rubio.

Favors would be a great fit offensively next to Towns and could help him defensively though not the rim protector that would be ideal. Burks could be the guy Minny hoped Crawford would be. Exum is young. Maybe someone would take him? Neto is good, young and cheap. Who wouldn't want him? Thibs would love Thabo. Ideally you keep Bradley or Udoh. Works to include both. With Patton out again Bradley would be a good pick-up for them. Udoh might help them more now and Thibs would love him. Could even play him with Towns maybe.

Those things bubbled to the surface during summer league. He played eight games this summer between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, averaging 16 points, six rebounds and nearly three assists per contest. Niang also showed touch from distance, hitting almost 40 percent of his 3-pointers, as well as 47 percent overall.

From that game until the end of the regular season, Rubio put up mind-blowing averages of 16 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting from the field and 43.8 percent from deep along with 6.1 assists per contest. It was an absolute reversal from the previous half of the season. Even in a Western Conference known for its prolific point guards, Rubio appeared as if he fit in among the best.

Except his actual finish was 35%/ and 32 from 3 in the playoffs before getting hurt. :rant

The Salt Lake City Stars were hoping for their version of that Cinderella story through open tryouts at Bruin Arena on the campus of Salt Lake Community College.

Lindsey still has a couple of training camp invites to hand out, but the Jazz's 2018-19 roster looks complete. Someone deserves a relaxing vacation on the beach after assembling the team.

No he doesn't :facepalm

After adding Rubio last summer, the Jazz struggled during the first half of last season; so did Rubio. The Jazz clicked when Rubio did and went on to win 29 of their final 35 games. They jumped from 10th to fifth in the West and won their first-round playoff series. The entire team deserves credit for the turnaround, but Rubio played a key factor.

Gobert

During this incredible stretch, Rubio averaged 16 points, five rebounds and five assists a game. He also had a fantastic playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, highlighted by his triple-double in Game 3.

About three minutes into Jazz's dispiriting Jan. 22 road loss to the Hawks, Ricky Rubio missed a layup. He was 0-of-5. Quin Snyder, Utah's coach, removed Rubio and sat next to him for a chat. Snyder suggested those five shots had been something less than good. Rubio countered that he was open. Snyder put Rubio back in 45 seconds later.

Therein lies the problem

Rubio had trouble adjusting to Utah's equal opportunity offense. What was the point of stashing a passing wizard with a rickety jump shot away from the ball?

there is no point. What's the point of playing defense behind your opponent? :rant

Rubio discovered sharing the ball concealed his weakness -- that jumper -- instead of exacerbating it. When Mitchell started possessions with a pick-and-roll on one side of the floor, he bent the entire defense toward him. They could not gird themselves to duck under a Rubio pick-and-roll, because they did not know if Rubio would get the ball. "The beauty of our team is that anyone can shoot," Ingles says. "Especially Donovan. He always shoots." (Note: Ingles was teasing. He is always teasing.)

but only Ingles can shoot. another problem

He throws conventional passes from unconventional angles, timed to inflict maximum pain; look how this corner-to-corner beauty approaches Ingles' hands while his defender, Corey Brewer, is still drifting into the paint:

plenty of unconventional ons that were way off target

"I had those things in my game, but I was just scared before," Rubio says. "I don't even know why. In my head it was always, 'Do the right thing and don't make mistakes.'"

right there is his biggest problem. mental weakness

Rubio has to sustain this for Utah to continue climbing. It won't be easy. There will be nights when Rubio spends too much time in the corner, a passive decoy defenses ignore. His jumper will hit troughs. The Rubio/Gobert/Derrick Favors trio needs to show it can survive on offense over a full season; Favors' improvement on corner 3s and as a playmaker in space will be crucial, too.

good luck with that! :facepalm

Rubio is a free agent this summer, and not yet 28. The Jazz could have a bonanza of cap space. If the Rubio-Mitchell partnership thrives, they will sacrifice a lot of it to keep building.

and if it doesn't they have Mitchell, O'Neale, Allen and Exum.

For the third year in a row, the Utah Jazz have one of the deepest teams in the NBA. But that may mean more questions than answers.

and they ended up not actually being deep when all was said and done

Depending on your opinion of incoming rookie Grayson Allen, the 2018-19 Utah Jazz have as many as 13 players who could make the rotation for plenty of teams all over the league.

Does Exum make anyone else's rotation?

Wing/Guard: Donovan Mitchell (34), Alec Burks (14)

have you been paying attention? Burks won't be playing. O'Neale and Allen will be ahead of him. Exum will get minutes there. Probably Neto and Niang are ahead of Alec as well

Forward/Wing: Derrick Favors (8), Jae Crowder (20), Thabo Sefolosha (20)

Thabo and Jae can only play one spot?

This is a 10-man rotation, probably deeper than a lot of teams throughout the regular season. And definitely deeper than most playoff rotations.

I see 9 guys. Allen probably 10. Maybe Niang?
