Let's see if Lindsey and company can do what needs to be done to be able to compete for title. They need shooters around Mitchell, Gobert and Ingles. Anything else is a failure as far as I'm concerned

Derrick Favors is the biggest piece. He said he "wanted to wait" to think about his free agency decision until the offseason. When asked what factors will matter to him when making his decision, Favors said a major factor is the role the Jazz or another team will give him.

The biggest piece should be the easiest to let go. He'd be stupid to come back and they'd be stupid to bring him back

He needs to be diving to the rim in the pick and roll. That's not Utah

He still views himself more as a power forward than as a center and said he proved he can play multiple positions, can switch on defense, and has worked on his outside game.

Needs a rim protector next to him that can stretch the floor. Not many of those around though

Dante Exum will be a restricted free agent after the Jazz tender him the qualifying offer. Dennis Lindsey said they "hope to retain" Exum, and a smiling Exum confirmed that report, saying, "I think the Jazz want me back." He said the rest is for his agency to figure out.

Does he want back? Can't see paying a defensive specialist that is injury prone and an offensive liability 9-10 million a year

Jonas Jerebko is under contract for the 2018-19 season, but the Jazz can waive it before July 9 if they'd like to open up salary cap space. But Jerebko wants to stay in Utah.

Snyder isn't a fan. Might as well let him go and spend the money elsewhere

Ekpe Udoh also has a contract guarantee date on July 9. He noted that he loves the deserts and mountains of Utah, but said he has to "do something offensively" to stay on an NBA roster. He still insists that he's one of the best defenders in the world, though.

Could be Rudy's back-up. Certainly an NBA rotation player. Do you want to block Bradley who could be a stretch big behind Rudy? Would have been nice to see Bradley get some quality minutes. He showed a lot with the Stars

[QUOTE]Thabo Sefolosha is in the same boat as Jerebko and Udoh, but with a contract guarantee date of July 1. "There is definitely some uncertainty. There is nothing written in stone," Sefolosha said. "I loved the year I had here, but the injury I couldn

Favors said he plans on further incorporating the 3-point shot in his offensive skillset this offseason, and he showed his ability this season to defend essentially every position on the floor when called upon.

Can work on it all you want. I don't ever see you hitting it consistently. You've never hit anything away from the rim consistently

The season that Donovan Mitchell and the Utah Jazz put together was nothing short of incredible. Just a year after the Jazz won their first playoff series since 2010, they knew they had to get better to compete. Utah was short a leader, and it was evident. So the team drafted Mitchell, who unbelievably fell into its laps in the draft at pick No. 13, and he vaulted himself into the conversation for Rookie of the Year.

Rudy's been leading them for more than 3 years

When you talk about Mitchell, it's disingenuous to call him a "future NBA star." It's pretty widely accepted that he's a star now, and for good reason. That 43-28 record came with nine lineup combinations around Mitchell. The one player we saw him really miss was Rudy Gobert, and even without Gobert, he averaged 21.5 points in 24 games played without the big man, which mainly just affected the Jazz's ability to defend the paint.

And the record?

Xiao Yao You

It's the same thing the Oklahoma City Thunder went through two years ago after losing Kevin Durant. Hayward isn't in the transformational star category that Durant is, but he certainly was at the heart of the Jazz's core building strategy. It was a process to get to where the team was a season ago: 51 wins and a second-round playoff appearance. To lose Hayward was a hard reset, and it forced the Jazz back to the middle of the crowded West.

He wasn't the heart as was proven yet again this year. Their 1st and 4th best players from last year returned. Mitchell was better than Hill. Favors was better this year. Neto was better this year. Burks was better this year. They got rid of Hood! Thabo, Jerebko, Udoh and O'Neale contributed. Exum was better.

"Do we want and/or need another scorer? Can some of the scoring come from within? Ricky as a scorer, Alec Burks' return to health, Dante Exum's development. So we'll just take a step back and evaluate it."

Why even mention Burks? He needs to go if the coach won't play him unless forced to. Ricky as a scorer is the plan? Dante? :wtf:

Another scorer would be nice but what they need is more shooting. A lot more

The thing is, the Jazz probably already have that second star. Mitchell has developed in almost every way the Jazz coaching staff asked him to, adding wrinkles to his game one film session at a time, such as wrong-footed finishes or floating drives. He has a competitive bravado to him, the kind that after a few playoff fires will only burn hotter.

Probably? They have two stars and a great role player in Ingles. Getting more stars is not necessarily a given but a lot more shooters can be had and it would improve the offense a bunch and put them right in the mix. No reason they can't run pick and roll with shooters around them like Houston does.

Though as Mitchell ascends and the offense gravitates more to him and accessing his elite skills (his usage rate climbed to 31.8 percent in the playoffs), can the Jazz maintain the structure and system that are in place, or will they have to evolve? Is Mitchell good enough to be his own offensive system in the way Harden is for the Rockets?

yes

"We have a defensive base to start from and several good players under contract, a few players who are free agents that we hope to retain," Lindsey said. "I think we're well-positioned for the next few years. We could have a little bit of flexibility going into this offseason, but more likely, the group deserves another shot to improve."

They do? I think some of the guys on the roster can shoot better. Mitchell, Crowder, O'Neale maybe Exum but you need more shooting. Can't have enough. The depth wasn't good either specially after Hood and Johnson were traded and Thabo was hurt. More shooting and more depth.

Favors gone. Exum possibly gone depending on the price. Rubio ideally would be gone. Burks, Neto, Thabo, and Jonas might as well be gone since they aren't appreciated but I guess if Favors is gone Thabo/Jerebko/Udoh might be more in the mix? Burks and Neto could be if Exum and Rubio were gone but the fact that the coach played Rubio and Exum over them to begin with tells me they aren't appreciated.

Before I even read this hilarious article Mitchell, Gobert and Ingles. Everyone else is replaceable. Need shooting and more shooting!

From February 1 until the end of the regular season, Rubio put up 16 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting from the field and 43.1 percent from deep while chipping in 5.1 rebounds and 6.0 assists. He developed an awesome chemistry with his entire team and proved that he is every bit capable of being a playoff-caliber starting point guard.

My gess is your rumored picks are just the guys that randomly are put in the Jazz slot because they are the 21st rated player on their board. All these guys are wings. I realy have a hard time seeing them taking anything but a 4 possibly a 4/5 or a 3/4 but a 4. Rather they have to move up in the draft or down to get one. Just look at the roster. Even if they'd kept Bolomboy I'd think this would have been the pick

I see a wing with the 2nd pick. Maybe a 1 or combo guard. With Bradley being the youngest guy center seems unlikely.

Can you blame us? Rubio started off his career with the Jazz on a high note. Over his first eight games with the Jazz, Rubio averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, five rebounds, two steals and shot 37 percent from the 3-point line. Those are mind-boggling, All-Star level stats.

Should they aim to largely keep the team together, make internal improvement the main focus and see what they can accomplish next season before getting too risky? Or should Utah get aggressive and look to make major moves this summer while several teams find themselves strapped for cash?

The team they have isn't beating GS and Houston not to mention other team improving like SA with Kawai etc.

Presti remembers back to the Victor Oladipo-Serge Ibaka trade and sees how Oladipo is thriving shortly after the Thunder gave up on him. Where could a candidate like Oladipo be available? The Washington Wizards. The John Wall and Bradley Beal backcourt are demanding a younger, more athletic center who is tailor made for pick and rolls. Enter the Utah Jazz who have Derrick Favors. While Derrick Favors is a free agent, the Utah Jazz could aid the Wizards in getting their dream big man. The Wizards are completely capped out, but Utah could fix that. Utah does a sign and trade with the Washington Wizards. They sign and trade Derrick Favors and package him with Alec Burks and Thabo Sefolosha for Otto Porter and Marcin Gortat.

This seems like a lifetime ago, but the Jazz faced a truly difficult decision in which player to sign. Based on preseason production alone, Bolomboy was actually the obvious choice. He averaged 10 points per game in just 8.7 minutes per game. He also showed a much-improved stroke from three-point range and not just in corner threes either. He was taking and making above the break threes.

Bolomboy was one of the best players in the pre-season and looked like a nice role player the couple of times he played last year. Not a very good job of roster management by Lindsey. They could have went and signed him instead of Long, Stockton, 2-way guys too but are too proud to admit a mistake. Not hard to imagine Bolomboy being ahead of Jonas and Udoh in the rotation. He certainly shoed more than the one trick pony Exum

The Jazz are at a similar checkpoint to 1988, when they took the Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the West semis, and to 2008, when they lasted six games with the Lakers at that stage. The Stockton/Malone Jazz needed four more years to advance beyond that point; the Deron Williams/Carlos Boozer Jazz never won another game in the second round. In that sense, the Mitchell/Gobert Jazz might be further away than anyone would like to believe.

Yeah '88 is similar. The Jazz were on the verge of great things and settled for being a playoff team. Sounds like the same thing again to me

It’s a good question. History says the draft, but given the range the Jazz will draft in, it would take a pretty impressive “hit” plus some development time. Given their free agency track record and what they have to work with in the trade market, it seems more likely that they’d trade for someone who could become a top-50 guy rather than someone who’s already there. So in any case, I think some more patience will be required. But the good news is that the Jazz are going to be pretty dang good while they figure those things out.

Trade seems most likely. Can't count on getting a guy like that though. What they can certainly do cheaply is surround Mitchell and Gobert with shooters which will put them in the mix

The nature of the Thabo Sefolosha, Jonas Jerebko and Ekpe Udoh deals is why I think an impact trade is a more legitimate possibility than an impact signing. You could trade one or two of those guys with, say, Alec Burks and be able to bring back well over $20 million in salary. But you’re not going to get an impact player for three dudes who were in and out of the Jazz’s rotation. So you’d be talking about someone who’s a little overpaid and/or on a team that’s not good and needs to reset its books. Evan Turner? Nikola Vucevic? Gorgui Dieng? Maybe attach a pick and you can move into a conversation for someone slightly better. Are the Jazz afraid of Danilo Gallinari’s recent health woes? Interested in a Harrison Barnes reclamation project? I don’t know, but if the Jazz add an eight-figure salary this summer, my bet is it happens via trade.

Not sure Dallas wants to trade Barnes but he could be a nice fit

Hez can play, and the Magic won’t have matching rights since they declined his fourth-year option. The question I’ve heard about Hez is whether or not he had too much of an attitude/ego to exist within a strong culture. I have no idea if he’s addressed that concern or not, but the fact that Orlando chose not to keep their former top-five pick back for a fourth season makes me worry some.

The fact that a guy that is supposed to be a shooter plays better defensively worries me!

If you sign Barton, are you letting Exum walk? Because Barton doesn’t have the size to play the three, and you probably have close to all 96 backcourt minutes allocated already between Rubio, Mitchell and Exum, don’t you? I like Barton in certain contexts; he’s sort of the better version of a Burks-style player, someone who can score in bunches with the ball in his hands. But, like Burks, he does his best work out of system, so I’m curious if the Jazz would be all that interested.

96 minutes between Mitchell and two of the worst players in the league at 25 million a year. Now that's a plan! :rant

Well if you’re trying to keep the “powder dry,” then you’re talking about one-year deals specifically, or guys who would be willing to sign the Sefolosha/Jerebko type deals with a non-guaranteed second year. So you’d be talking about guys in that tier: veterans or guys who have had an up-and-down start and believe a solid year can return their value. Maybe that’s where a guy like Hezonja takes a bet on himself. Here are some names of guys who made less than $9M last year but had decent wins-added stats: Wayne Ellington, Anthony Tolliver, Joe Harris, Aron Baynes.

Ellington looks like he could be a guy to target

I’m sure there are people who would love that, but I’ve never been wild about the Jazz fit there. Anderson does one thing really well: he shoots the heck out of the ball. He’s not a good rebounder or passer, and he’s enough of a liability on defense that he has disappeared from Houston’s rotation for chunks of games. At 30, he’s not going to suddenly get better at defending, and he’s equally bad protecting the paint AND guarding out on the perimeter. That’s not to say that a team couldn’t figure out how to make good use of his offensive gravity for short stretches off the bench, but he’s no longer a starter-caliber player.

Not sure Favors is much better at rebounding

In terms of bad cap management, I’d look at teams who are capped out (or flirting with the tax) for a middling roster. Charlotte, Detroit and the Clippers all missed the playoffs despite paying close to $120 million to their players. But there’s something worse than overpaying for mediocrity: being directionless. Teams like the Kings, Knicks and Bulls keep making moves that make me wonder what their short-term goals are. Sacramento’s decisions over the last 10 or 11 months are particularly perplexing in that respect: they’ll make a move that makes it look like they’re trying to be good, then follow it up with a clear tanking move. It’s just not clear what they’re doing.

You forgot Orlando and Phoenix. Good luck Igor. You'll need it!

Not even worried about that. He has great form. He'll be fine. Him and Rudy need to spend as much time running the pcik and roll together as they can ideally with some tutelage from Stockton and Malone. Put shooters around that and they are doing the same thing as the Rockets did to the Jazz. How Rubio makes any sense to that is beyond me!

Not sure I'd want anything to do with the prima dona after this year.

A lot of Jazz fans would probably agree with GM Dennis Lindsey that we need to add one more big wing who can defend and shoot the 3 consistently.

They have one shooter that the coach likes. I can see some internal improvement on that front but they need more than one player to challenge

What about Derrick Favors? It would be hard to replace him in my opinion but if we can’t re-sign him, I am confident that Dennis Lindsey has a backup plan in place.

Would be stupid not to replace him. Along with Rubio and Exum that's the obvious place you look to improve the shooting and spacing of the team

we don’t have to worry about the possibility of our 4th of July being ruined because we have a wishy washy unrestricted free agent who can’t make up his mind.

Get over it already. He did what many free agents before did and many will continue to do and have every right to do. Huge decision. He made it. The only thing that would have changed for the Jazz is maybe they'd have been stuck with Gallinari!

Some “breaking news” regarding NBA awards today, which has already been covered with separate posts on SLCDUNK. I use the quotes because it’s not really breaking news that Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell are nominated for Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year respectively(Now if they both win then that would be some pretty awesome news for Jazz fans). But it is notable that Coach Quin Snyder was selected as one of three finalists for Coach of the Year. That is remarkable considering that when the season started Quin Snyder and COY weren’t a part of the same conversation for anybody.

What is really remarkable is this is the same guy that platooned two of their best players while the team racked up losses with Hood and Rubio killing them for 30 minutes a night! :wtf: :wtf:

The Jazz have two stars on the team also to be fair, however, if you look at the adversity the Jazz faced combined with the fact that they play in the Western Conference, the choice has to be Quin Snyder. The most compelling argument for me is that I think any other team that was 19-28(including the Celtics) after being more than halfway through the season would have packed it in. It’s truly amazing and inspiring that Quin was able to keep his guys focused and help them get better over the course of the season. In the words of a recently retired NBA superstar who may or may not have played for the Los Angeles Lakers “It’s not about where you start the season, but how you finish”. Even though the Celtics went farther in the playoffs this year, the Jazz exceeded expectations by the widest margin in my opinion and a lot of credit for that has to go to their coach.

He's a big reason why they were 19-28. When he shows he can win games without Rudy I'll be impressed

If Mitchell can make a few more of his shots, avoid turnovers, and (critically) get himself some easy points by getting to the free-throw line more often, he can be a top-five player in the NBA.

Put shooters around him and his efficency goes up and the turnovers down. It's really quite simple

Rudy Gobert is 25 and is already the league's best defensive player. But it's possible to imagine him being a step more secure with the ball and getting a little bit stronger with his finishing outside of dunking range. It's not that Gobert needs a post move or a jump shot, he just needs something to do if a smaller opponent beats him to the rim after he catches the ball on a roll. Steven Adams might provide a useful model here, though as Lindsey points out, their bodies are very different.

Put shooters around him and he gets the easy buckets he got last year and Capela got this year. Simple

Exum showed big flashes in 2017-18 but needs to show that he can get to the rim even when the defense is ready for it. The pull-up shot will need to be a threat, somehow.

Getting to the rim hasn't been a problem. Finishing and holding on to the ball and making open jumpers has. The problem I see is counting on Exum, Rubio and Favors to fix the biggest problem which is spacing and shooting

The Jazz probably need to make it a big three by adding a third star-level player. That player's most important role would be to take a level of scoring burden off of Mitchell, who clearly needed a break at times this postseason. But that player would also need to fit the Jazz's identity: good basketball IQ, solid enough defensively and not a big enough ego to upset Utah's unique locker room.

Don't think they necessarily need a 3rd star. Would be nice but shooters is more realistic

It's easy to imagine Kevin Love as a fit next to Gobert, as Love's shooting threat opens space for Gobert's dives to the rim and vice versa. His defense is limited, but it may be solid enough. Love also has said that Park City is his favorite place in the U.S. Cleveland may shop Love for long-term pieces if LeBron James leaves this summer, or Love has a player option after the 2018-19 season if he'd like to become a free agent then.

Snyder might bench him like Jerebko for lack of D

Kyle Lowry was a free agent possibility for the Jazz in the summer of 2017, talking with Utah's front office before deciding to stay in Toronto while the Jazz chased Gordon Hayward. He's also 32 years old and hasn't exactly stepped his game up in the playoffs in the past. If Toronto is looking to make changes, he might be available.

He makes sense but what about the Matador? Can't see the Jazz moving on from him yet. Makes too much sense

Paul George fits the criteria and has a relationship with Mitchell that was established before Mitchell's rookie season. He is a free agent in 2018, but it would be very difficult for the Jazz to open up the cap space to sign him to his max contract. He seems likely to go to Los Angeles.

I think they could open up the space for him but he'd rather play for a lottery team it sounds like

Jimmy Butler, Kemba Walker, Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard are all going to be free agents in 2019 when the Jazz will be able to open up much more cap space than 2018. Thompson seems very likely to stay in Golden State, and Leonard seems likely to go to L.A. if he leaves San Antonio. Butler and Walker, though, could find themselves frustrated by their teams and be true free agents for Lindsey to recruit.

Butler makes lots of sense. Be a small backcourt with Kemba

There are other attainable pieces that might get to that All-Star level: the Wizards are going to have to dump one of John Wall, Bradley Beal and Otto Porter at some point; Khris Middleton is a free agent in 2019; and I guess Jabari Parker and Aaron Gordon have that potential.

Beal, Porter and Middleton would fit nicely as well

But if they give up draft picks in a trade, they can't use them in June on draft day. That's where Lindsey has done his best work. He turned the No. 24 pick and a fringe prospect in Trey Lyles last year into Mitchell, and turned a second round pick and some cash into Rudy Gobert. Even Rodney Hood gave the Jazz value at No. 23.

Some of his worst work as well

Looking at free agent PF's I like Nemanja Bjelica. He's resticted but Minny is strapped. Should be able to steal him.

Illasova would be the 2nd choice. Non Bird rights for him. Looks ike he is the better overall player but Nemanja can really shoot! Both can shoot and it appears they both play enough D that Quinn might let them play. Both foreigners as well.

Got to let Favors go. Favors could make sense in Minnesota next to Towns(assuming he's still on their team)

Draft a young 4 to develop with the Stars and possibly play by the end of the year if he's ready.

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865698420/Dante-Exum-Raul-Neto-both-face-offseason-decisions-with-Utah-Jazz-and-free-agency.html

The 6-foot-6 Exum, the No. 5 overall draft choice in 2014 as an 18-year-old from Australia, is expected to be back with the Jazz. The team has indicated that and Exum has expressed a desire to be back, but it’s not a done deal, depending on how much money Exum expects and how much the Jazz are willing to pay him.

I haven't seen where Exum said he wanted to be back. Also depends on what other teams want to pay him. He's not worth the qualifying offer much less the 9-10 million a year that has been bandied about that is certain.

Neto, who was acquired in a draft-day deal in 2013 and has played with the Jazz for three seasons after first joining the franchise in 2015, is less likely to return. The Jazz like Neto and he has enjoyed his time in Utah, but he may not be willing to come back as the No. 3 point guard for another season.

I'm sure he'll get more than the Jazz want to pay him. Might as well bring Goss over. Neto needs to go where he's appreciated. He's too good to play behind inferior players just because they are longer and more athletic. Why pay guys you don't care for? Why play where they don't think much of you?

“Nothing changes for me going into the summer,” Exum said. “I’m still going to have the same mindset trying to get better, that’s the biggest thing. I think the Jazz want me back, so hopefully it all works out. My agent’s going to take care of that and I think for me as a player, I just need to control what I can control.”

good attitude since you're not very good!

Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said the Jazz don’t want to let Exum go and believe he has a bright future, despite his missing one season and parts of two others with injuries.

He was healthy last year. He didn't play because he sucks!

“We hope to retain him,” said Lindsey. “Obviously there’s a lot of conversations and in a free agent market, it’s hard to predict. Dante’s done his job, he’s had some unfortunate things happen. We don’t think he’s injury prone — things happen to young players. He’s the right guy, he’s got the right level of talent. You don’t get the same package of speed and size. It’s our job to develop him but we’ll see what happens.”

He certainly appears to be injury prone

“For me the biggest thing is the pull-up (jumper),” he said. “I’ve got the ability to get to the basket and guys are going to start to play on that a bit more. If I maybe shoot the mid-range pull-up and obviously the 3-pointer, it adds a different aspect to my game that guys are going to have to defend and open up my driving lanes a bit more.”

You can't finish. You don't want to shoot open 3's. Plenty to work on

“I think I deserved it, there’s nothing else I can do,” he said. “I did the whole three years giving everything I have on the court and practice every day. I think everybody sees that. The only thing I can do now is to relax, enjoy my family, enjoy some time back in Brazil.”

You definitely deserve better. I will miss you!

On most teams in the NBA, Raul Neto would be a solid choice for a backup point guard. Someone out there is going to want him and will pay him a lot more than he has been earning with the Jazz.

He'd be a solid choice for the Jazz since their starter and back-up suck!

Next season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to see the "error of their ways" in trading away Ricky Rubio.

This is an easy decision. He needs to go. He has to know it and the Jazz should know it as well. They need more shooting. He's never goin to be that guy and shouldn't even be wasting his time trying. He's too good diving to the hole to be spotting up in the corner

It’s an awkward position to be in in terms of improving. You can let Favors walk and trade Rubio, though you’re not likely to get much in return and it’s debatable you can get enough quality pieces in free agency. On the other side, standing pat isn’t going to help, even if Mitchell improves and Gobert stays healthy.

NEEDS:

-Stretch 4

-Bench scoring SG or SF

You are close unlike most people. Potential stretch 4 with the first pick that can potentially defend multiple positions. A wing or guard with the 2nd pick that can potentially shoot and defend multiple positions.

But, say, they let go of Udoh and/or Jerebko, they could use a solid backup PF that can stretch the floor.

They shouldn't be counting on anyone they draft to help them next season certainly not to start the year. Donovan has really been the only one that was ready. Whoever they draft should be considered a Star until he proves otherwise. Free agency and trades is where they fill immediate needs

What I do think is more likely to happen is Lindsey goes looking for some bench scoring. In that Houston series, it was rough trying to get guys to score other that Donovan or Joe. Burks is more of a slasher and Royce has some good moments, but not consistent yet. Thankfully, there's a dearth of 2s and 3s in the back part that the Jazz could target.

Unlikely they are going to draft someone that is better than the vets they have especially with the 2nd pick.

https://www.slcdunk.com/2018/5/18/17369674/jazz-2018-19-season-and-free-agents

What the jazz need in order to really contend is a matter of opinion and debate. Most people seem to agree that the team needs another scorer and a stretch 4 but there aren't many players who check off both of those boxes. To meet those needs the team could sign two players (another scoring guard and a rotation big, building a roster similar to 2016 GSW or the current HOU/TOR teams) or they could sign one player (an all-star stretch 4). There are probably more available scoring guards on the market this summer than stretch 4s but that option will likely be more expensive since the team will still need someone to play PF. So my preference, accounting for finances and roster fit, would be a stretch 4.

Need shooters and guys that can switch defensively.

3) Dependable starters
Free agents: Derrick Favors, Tyreke Evans, Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Enes Kanter, Rudy Gay, Ersan Ilyasova

The only player from this list I'd be excited for is Favors (some of these could easily be in the role player group). Others could probably match Favors' production but come with various levels of baggage or poor fit. All else equal, I'd much rather have Favors than anyone else here.

Illasova and maybe Ariza. Pass on the rest

4) Role players

The non-taxpayer exception is where the Jazz fall. This is for teams between the salary cap and the luxury tax apron. It's the largest of the three kinds and is about 8% of the cap, so almost $9M for the '18-'19 season.

Some of these teams will be looking to keep their own guys. Some will be looking to upgrade. If we remove all the free agents (including those with options), then there are 15 teams that will need to find a starting big. Some of those, like Denver (Jokic), Houston (Capela), and Orlando (Gordon), are likely to bring back their guys because they have team control. Other teams have a starting level big currently further down in the rotation, like Cleveland (Thompson) or New Orleans (Mirotic). None of those teams are likely to pursue Favors.

Favors could actually be the perfect fit next to Davis. Diving to the rim wth Davis stretching the floor and help defender with Davis protecting the paint. I'd pay him before I'd pay Cousins.

Most of these teams will be looking for bigs. The notable exceptions are Philadelphia (they have Embiid and Saric), Orlando (Vucevic and Gordon), and Denver (Jokic and Millsap). I also want to point out that after winning the draft lottery Phoenix is more likely to waive Alan Willams and renounce the rights to Alex Len and Elfrid Payton, giving them their maximum cap space to work with as they build around Booker and Ayton/Doncic.

He'd fit in Philly. Not sure he's a better fit than Saric though. He'd give them more insurance if Embiid is hurt though.

[QUOTE]The Pacers are a team that needs to bolster their bench more than anything else. Myles Turner is an above average starting center with the ability to both shoot the 3 and protect the rim. It almost seems redundant to keep both Rubio and Exum at this point. Exum obviously has the higher "ceiling", but he's also got the lowest too if that makes sense. But neither are reliable shooters, add in Burks as well and you're not getting much long range help off the bench.

With that being said, I don't think many teams would give up a lot for either of them, so they may take it as they're worth more playing than as trade bait.

O’neale’s surprising play made trading Rodney Hood more palatable. He also stabilized the starting lineup during the stretches where Ricky Rubio was injured. So much so that the Jazz were 4-0 during the season when O’neale started.

No matter how he played they were a better team without Hood. Would have been better even if they'd just dumped him and got nothing in return. He was killing them at both ends!

Not sure
I don’t really want to draft the same position as DM. But I would say you have to take the best available talent regardless of position.
I don’t want to pass over a Devin Booker because we want to draft a stretch 4.

Than you try to move up to where you can get the stretch 4 or move down to get the stretch 4 and other assets. They should take a center if he's the best player available even though they have Bradley who might not even be in the rotation again? They put guys into tiers. So the BPA could be a pick between more than one guy. If it's even I take the 4

With Ingles at the 4, it would allow Snyder to play an extra wing that could take the Jazz offense to another level. Think of the space to operate for Ricky Rubio and the lanes that would be created for players like Donovan Mitchell and Dante Exum! They would get to the rim with as much ease and quickness as me getting to the fridge for another ice cream sandwich. This could also do wonders for Rudy Gobert to have more space in the pick and roll.

That still leaves one shooter on the floor. Doesn't change a thing!

I've already said I think between Ingles, Crowder, Jonas, Thabo and their #1 pick they could be alright at the 4. The biggest thing with Ingles at the 4 would be rebounding and him getting beat up more. Thabo would be the best choice to start but I think he's gone because he smokes pot and was platooning even before that. Snyder isn't a big fan of the other part of the platoon Jonas either. They've talked like O'Neale could play the 4 too with his size. Makes them very small at the position though. Would need someone that could match up with bigger guys at times. Ingles mostly played the 2 when Hayward was here. Hayward would actually be the ideal 4. I imagine that's where he'll mostly play for Boston.

That he wasn't in "Jazz shape," as Perrin put it, can be taken one of two ways. On one hand, it's discouraging that he's not in peak physical condition as he undergoes what will be some of the most important workouts of his career. The workout schedule is a grind, but so is the NBA regular season. Does that mean you question his work ethic?

Might not be up for 3 hour practices

And that's the question, I suppose. He can't really be a stretch four, but is he big enough to be at the center position? It would be fine for bench units, but probably not as a starter. I'm kind of reminded of Golden State's Jordan Bell, though Metu is an inch taller. He's going to be a good pick for somebody in the late first or early second round.

If he can guard on the perimeter and hit the 3 why can't he be a stretch 4? :confusedshrug:

If the Utah Jazz retain Derrick Favors and Dante Exum in free agency, they're unlikely to do much on the market. Like the Bucks, Utah figures to be over the cap with the full MLE at its disposal.

Moving on from Favors and Exum while cutting bait on nonguaranteed contracts for Thabo Sefolosha, Jonas Jerebko and Ekpe Udo would open up some more flexibility. Even in that scenario, Utah would be looking at less than $20 million in space.

Neto and Burks

Adding Caldwell-Pope would be part of a larger commitment to putting the ball in Mitchell's hands as the primary point guard. Ricky Rubio had a banner year, but for the Jazz to reach their absolute ceiling, they need more dynamic scoring and court-expanding stretch.

Someone gets it. Do Lindsey and Snyder though?

It'll be tempting for Utah to hold fast, saving its ammo for a 2019 offseason in which it could have up to $50 million available. But the Jazz are closer to serious contention than most think, and the incremental improvement of KCP over Royce O'Neale could be all it takes to elevate this roster.

They need shooters. If they can get guys that can shoot and switch on D do it!

The Jazz have some big decisions to make with Derrick Favors, a free agent, who made $12 million last year and restricted free agent Dante Exum, who made $5 million. If both players are signed to significant raises and the Jazz make some other moves to sign free agents, they could find themselves in luxury tax territory, something the franchise has rarely delved into in the past.

Won't go into the tax for Hill, Millsap, Hayward but why not for Favors and Exum. Insanity!

However, where Niang truly shined was in the G-League where he played extended minutes and had a chance to thrive. In 41 games played with both the Santa Cruz Warriors and Salt Lake City Stars, Niang put up an impressive line of 19.7 points per game on 57 percent shooting from the field and 45.7 percent from deep. He also added 6.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and over a steal per game.

A shooter! He can play. Not sure if he's going to be able to defend enough at the NBA level and it would probably have to be from the 4. He needs to get in better shape.

Utah is good, but they are still a piece or two away. The team finished a mediocre 15th in offensive rating, thanks in large part to a lack of spacing.

Why is it that everyone outside the Jazz world sees it ? :confusedshrug:

The deal is very simple for Toronto. Save a small amount of money in the short time, while also acquiring two expiring contracts. Rubio is a nice player and Burks has shown flashes when able to stay on the court, but both players would be more highly sought after due to the timing of their deals.

But with Derozan leading the team their spacing gets worse. Doesn't make much sense for them

And that sort of passes the eye test. Dennis Lindsey has done a great job of building a roster with serious depth. It’s been a strength of Utah’s for at least the last two seasons.

Just because Burks and Neto are sitting behind inferior players doesn't make them deep

With the expected improvement of Mitchell and hopefully some health for Gobert, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the already impressive Jazz rise in 2018-19.

The GM and coach should be fired if they don't rise. :wtf:

This article should hopefully put to rest the notion that our team is bad and our coach is a God.

That will never change. Jerry got all of the credit and none of the blame when he was coach

We are a middling rebounding team which doesn’t make sense with both Gobert and Favors.

Yep the fact that they play big and get outrebounded is embarrassing really

We are good at defensive rebounds and poor at offensive rebounds. I get that this is probably planned, but having a single strong offensive rebounder has been beneficial for OKC and others. The fact that we are a top DRB team should suggest that we could be a top ORB team also. I wonder if we should tweak our game plan on rebounding.

They used to be great on the offensive glass. They changed to where only 1 big is usually hitting the offensive glass in favor of transition d

We are a bad turnover team that hopefully will be much better next year.

If they bring back the same team I wouldn't expect that to change much

We are an average assisting team which should be a priority to improve.

Why? They pass it more than anyone.

We shoot a decent number of 3s.

For a team with one shooter they take way too many

I believe that our offense under-performed our talent level and requires some changes that will minimize turnovers, increase assists, and most importantly focus on efficient shots. I am not confident that will happen with the exception of Mitchell increasing his efficiency. I would suggest that this is the most important thing to focus on for next year and that DL will have to make some changes to help Quin do this. We actually have the personnel to make these changes but they are not being put together in the right lineups and minutes. DL has to make one or two personnel trades but only with Quin’s approval, because it doesn’t matter who DL gets if Quin won’t play them or plays them incorrectly.

The offense will get better with shooters and spacing. Less turnovers. More open shots hit for assists.

So other teams can get the ball to their bigs but we have a problem with it.

Spacing. Either Mitchell gets a layup. Rudy gets a lob or an open 3. It's not rocket science!

We are going to lose some of that if we let go of Jerebko, but we should let him go anyways because I don’t believe he is used in the right lineups and doesn’t get playing time.

Yep. It the coach doesn't like him might as well get someone else that he might

If we just bring everyone back and get better, be better, we could be the 3rd best team in the league next year, maybe even 2nd if Capela leaves and Paul loses a step, and LeBron doesn’t go to Philly.

Hes not going to Philly

a full year of Ricky integrated into the team

Hopefully he'd gone by the trade deadline

more shots for Favors, Ingles, Gobert, Jerebko, and Burks, fewer shots for Jae, Ricky, and Mitchell

Favors, Jonas and Alec need to be gone. Ricky ideally would be too but I know that is wishful thinking. Jae needs to take better shots. Rudy, Mitchell and Ingles need more shots. Mitchell will certainly be taking more. :wtf:

balanced lineups for offense

That won't happen. Snyder talked about being connected at both ends but it doesn't matter how bad guys are on offense if he thinks they play D

MIP for Burks and Exum

wishful thinking :facepalm

My two cents: keep an eye on Keita Bates-Diop, Donte DiVicenzo and Shake Milton. KBD has the potential to be a solid starter in this league for years to come. He was the Big Ten Player of the Year after averaging 20 points and eight rebounds a game, while also shooting 36 percent from three. At nearly 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, he can score in a variety of ways, including posting up smaller players.

Diop is the guy I'm thinking that could be their 4. Might have to move up to get him?

DiVicenzo and Milton would also be strong selections at this position. If you are looking for the safest pick at this point in the draft, DiVicenzo has a much higher floor. He projects to be a high level 3-point shooter, who also has the athleticism to create his own shot off the bounce. He could immediately step in and make an impact for the Jazz.

Immediately like Burke and Exum or like Mitchell?

This is likely the most obvious, but it is also the most important area of focus this off-season. Utah is blessed to have young players on their roster who still have significant opportunities to become better. If they can maximize their talents, this team can immediately take a leap into contention.

It's not the most important. I expect huge improvements from Mitchell but things will still be tough on him and Rudy without spacing which I don't see Favors, Rubio and Exum ever providing no matter how much you wish for it

I have asked this to many people recently, but if the Utah Jazz had not had the injury woes this past season, how many wins do you think they would have finished at? So no 26 game absence from Gobert, and we get a full season of Exum. Is 55 wins expecting too much?

I believe they were a lot healthier this year than the past two. Got to quit expecting that. They need more depth obviously

The Nuggets have far too many bigs on the roster, and they have to get better defensively if they're going to make it to the playoffs next year. Their offense is fine, so they don't really need to worry about getting shooters either. Jamal Murray and Gary Harris are pretty solid in their starting lineup, but they could be losing Will Barton, which would open up a rotation spot in the backcourt. Exum could be a great fit on this team, but Denver won't have the room to offer anything more than the MLE unless they move some other pieces.

Could make some sense. A sign and trade for Millsap?

The Knicks were rotating through cast off point guards for most of the season, so they need some stability in the backcourt. Getting a defensive minded player like Exum on a long term deal could work out really well for them. The fact that they have Porzingas as their primary big would also alleviate some of Exum's weaknesses on the offensive end. Dante could be a good fit here, but, like Denver, they may not have more than the MLE.

Already have two other young lottery pg's 3 if you count Burke. Doesn't make much sense. The French kid is basically a younger Exum right now. D and can't shoot

The Suns have plenty of money, so they may be willing to overpay for a restricted free agent knowing that they'll still have a few years before they have to give Booker and Ayton/Doncic big money. Exum could be a really nice backcourt partner for Booker with his defense and ability to get into the lane. The only downside for them is that their greatest area of need is the frontcourt. If Kokoskov thinks he can get more from Bender and/or Chriss, he may push the GM to look at guards, and Exum could be one of their targets.

They need a pg. I'd rather they got Rubio though!

The Kings have been a dumpster fire for years, but Divac actually seems to be doing a decent job lately (at least he hasn't made any outright horrible decisions, which is an improvement for the Kings). They have some young backcourt pieces in place with Fox and Hield, but could probably use a defensive minded guard to push them to improve on that end. Despite that, Exum likely isn't the best fit for the roster. They need much more help in the frontcourt, and Foxdidn't shoot well at all last season, so bringing in another non-shooting guard doesn't make too much sense.

Loaded with young guys already.

https://www.slcdunk.com/2018/5/24/17379514/jazz-free-agency-primer-market-for-exum

At this point, Exum is still going to be considered a bench guard. His injury history and inconsistent production won't merit him a starting spot. That means that any team that goes after him will either need to have an opening for a 3rd or 4th guard, or they'll want to upgrade their current bench. Here's where all the teams stand right now in their guard rotation:

To me he's an end of the bench defensive specialist not even a rotation player. He does one thing which does have value but how much value especially when you have many guys that can play D and also do other things. His age is the only reason I'd even consider paying him at all! I certainly wouldn't want to pay him the kind of money people are talking except for maybe just one year

While there are 10 teams that have current starters becoming free agents, not all of those teams will actually need to replace them by bringing in someone new. Boston already has Rozier and Brown on the roster, so they could let Smart go without losing a starting caliber guard. The same can be said for the Clippers replacing Rivers with Pat Beverley (though it's likely that they keep Rivers anyway). If a team plans to move a rotation guard into the starting lineup, they may look to add a guard like Exum to their bench.

Boston likes shooters. They won't want Exum. West would certainly not want Exum.

That means we have to look at role. Exum's young, which means that rebuilding teams will consider him in the hopes that he continues to develop and will be an age fit with any other young players they have on the roster. So far in his career, Exum's biggest strengths have been on the defensive end. He's fast, has quick hands, and is really long. He's been really good at bodying up defenders and using his length to get deflections, bother shots, and disrupt passing lanes. Teams that need to improve their backcourt defense will be the first ones to look at him.

I would think this is where he falls. A young team that wants to throw him into the mix and see if he finally develops into more than what he is

On offense, Exum has the ability to get to the rim (42% of his shots are at the rim), but he's only average at finishing. He's not much of a shooter, with his eFG% barely above 51%, and he's below 30% from three. Teams that need bench scoring will almost definitely pass on Exum. He did show greatly increased awareness this season, since his AST% jumped from about 15% to just under 30%, but a single season jump isn't guaranteeing sustainability.

I doubt he's average at finishing. He's horrible despite improving!

There aren't many teams that need defense but not shooting, but there are definitely teams that just need to improve their backcourt however they can.

The Jazz certainly don't need guys that can't shoot especially at 9-10 million a year!

Some teams, like Philly and Orlando already have a lot of non-shooters on the roster. Exum just doesn't make sense in those spots. The Lakers and Pacers could use some backcourt help on the bench, but they're already pretty decent defensively, so they'll likely prioritize other areas. That leaves 8 teams with a decent need for a player like Exum. Let's look at those teams individually:

Put the Jazz on the list of already having lots of non shooters on the roster. Like everyone but Ingles!

The Hawks were terrible last season and may not be getting much better. They need help everywhere. They'll have plenty of cap room to make offers, and they have 4 draft picks this year in the top 40. I expect them to fully embrace a rebuild, but they'll need to spend money to hit the salary floor. Exum could be a good fit as a guy who's young enough to fit in with the rookies. Even if they offer him big money, it won't hamper their long-term finances given the high number of rookie contracts they'll have.

Also played a similar system to the Jazz. Not sure if that will still be the case. Wasn't the new guy from Philly where it's also a Spurs guy?

The Nets already have a lot of guards on the roster. That might be a problem in courting someone like Exum, but the Nets desperately need some defensive upgrades. I don't expect them to really pursue Exum as their greatest needs could be addressed elsewhere.

They already have a lot of decisions to make with the guys they have. Not sure they'd want him but again Spurs program so who knows

Exum seems like exactly the kind of player that Mark Cuban would go for in any other offseason. The Mavs will be losing most of their guard rotation to free agency, they need some youth, they have the cap room to make a good offer. Everything would seem to line up for them to pursue Exum, but I just don't see it happening. They need to prepare their frontcourt for when Dirk retires, and this will be their best chance to do so.

Nellie Jr. and Carlisle are too smart aren't they?

However, if there was a way through trading Gobert to the Suns and us taking Luka and then trading other assets and the Jazz getting Mo Bamba I'd really be interested in seeing what that trio could do in the future. I know the best case scenario for Bamba is to be Rudy on the defensive end but Bamba might be able to shoot the 3 and seems like he will have a better rounded offensive game.

But why not move the 3-point line back? Force teams to use the shot more judiciously. For that matter, widen and lengthen the court — players have gotten so big that they’ve outgrown it. Something needs to change.

Can't really move the corner 3 without making the court bigger is the problem and that would take out expensive seats. Don't see it happening but that would be the best thing

How about reducing the camp out areas? Move the center of the 3 point line back about a foot or two and make it a gradual arc that removes the entire corner 3 as part of the game. It's starting to seem like one out of 5 corner 3's get called for out of bounds anyway. But this would make three-pointers only available from 2/3's of the area now available--and there would be less of my least favorite plays--namely--slashing to the basket and then whipping it over to the corner for an uncontested, short 3. I liked it the first few dozen times I saw it--and now--like the 3---it's getting old fast.

That's an idea. Only 3's from up top and further back

Without gutting half the roster, can Lindsey add a third star that is crucial to have in making a title run? The Jazz front office will exhaust all avenues (trade, draft and free agency) to continue to build a contender. The most glaring need this offseason is solidifying the power forward position.

A 3rd star will be hard to do but they can certainly improve the team greatly by surrounding Mitchell and Rudy with shooters.

Their offense may be better without Favors, but defensively the Jazz will struggle. This season, Gobert and Favors have a defensive rating of 99.5. Favors has been one of the best big men in his ability to switch and defend smaller and faster players. Due to injuries and the loss of athleticism (which happens with age to everyone) his skill in this is slowly diminishing.

Only one man will cause their D to struggle and it's not Favors

The reason why the Bucks might be willing to part with Parker is because both of his knees have had ACL tears. During his rookie season, after just 25 games, he tore his right ACL and then two seasons later he tore the left ACL, costing him most of the past two seasons. The injury concern is something the Jazz should take a hard look at and, lucky for them, they have the former assistant general manager of the Bucks (filling the same role with the Jazz) in Justin Zanik. They also have David Morway, who is another former assistant general manager of the Bucks (when they drafted Parker), working with the Jazz front office. So the Jazz should have plenty of intel on whether taking a gamble on Parker is a sound risk.

I'd say no

As illustrated above, he is obviously an elite athlete. At 6-foot-6 and weighing 220 pounds, he has all the measurables to play lock-down defense on the wing. According to Cleaningtheglass.com, he had a steal percentage of 1.7, which is in the 75th percentile for his position. Along with that, though, he only had a foul percentage of 1.9, which is in the 93rd percentile.

Those numbers combined tell us that Robinson has the ability to hound opposing ball-handlers, while staying out of foul trouble.

Or it tells us he gambles a lot and loses. Another Matador?

[QUOTE]The year prior he appeared in 61 games and attempted 124 threes. He shot 39 percent on those, so I would say it

NBA commissioner Adam Silver told ESPN there are no plans to modify the rules on who qualifies as a rookie, meaning players who sat out their true rookie year will remain eligible for the Rookie of the Year award the following season. “There are no plans to change it,” Silver told ESPN. “We’ve had that rule in place for some time. If we were to change the rule, we wouldn’t do it midseason. We would at least wait until the winner of the award is announced. But there have not been any discussions about changing the rule.” – via ESPN

A league source told ESPN that the NBA might be interested in adopting a rookie designation similar to that of Major League Baseball, where if a player competes in minimal games his rookie season due to injury, he would qualify for Rookie of the Year the next season. However, Silver said he hasn’t had any conversations about that. “I’m always open for suggestions,” he said, “but I don’t see anything happening there.” – via ESPN

What about a guy that's already been a top player in Europe like Donic? He should win it if he goes to a bad team with his experience

Then Hood began to grow frustrated with all of the change.

I bet he wishes he hadn't asked out of Utah now! :lol

We’ll take you back Rodney. The Jazz need another scorer and he would be a great bench player along with Jae Crowder. I think we could get him for cheap since his stock has gone down since being traded to Cleveland.

GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!! :wtf:

Being a bench player that doesn't play for Cleveland isn't a big deal in the long run. Someone will get a good, serviceable player In Hood in the coming year. He will be able to play his game a bit more. As in Utah, one key to his future success will be consistency. As a bench player he needs to be able to go in and score points much of the time. As a starter, as he was in Utah, he needs to score points on a more consistent basis. His stock has dropped not because of ability, but because he hasn't been needed on a James led team.

His problem was he couldn't play within the team concept and stay on the floor

[QUOTE]His absence throughout those games was about as gut-wrenching a situation as they come. The Jazz overall played extremely well against the Rockets, especially defensively, but they were never able to get their offense going to a degree where they had enough firepower to outscore Houston. Donovan Mitchell struggled to run the point at times and it was clear as day throughout the series how badly the Jazz needed Rubio

So how long until the Jazz get a turn in the NBA Finals spotlight?

Depends on the front office. They stand pat like the Jazz have always done probably never. If they get some shooters possibly next year

Teams can quickly rise via smart drafting, personnel moves and first-rate coaching. But getting to the top is a higher leap. The Jazz have proven themselves an upper-echelon team, but not an elite one. They’re unlikely to pass Houston or Golden State with their current makeup.

and yet all the talk is about keeping the team together :wtf:

Keep Gobert and Mitchell together. In turn, the stars will have to improve as steadily as Stockton and Malone.

Won't matter if they don't put a team around them like they didn't with Karl and John

Add another player the level of Jeff Hornacek. That single addition moved the Jazz into a different place.

I think Ingles might already be that guy. Need some shooters around them

Compile the best record in the league, or close to it, in the regular season. They tied for eighth-best this year.

Not that important. They've already shown they can win on the road. Being at the top of your game when it counts is more important

Retain Quin Snyder as coach.

Yeah retaining Jerry no matter what worked well!

Youth rules in the NBA, but experience counts. LeBron James is 33. Two decades ago, Jordan was 35. So Mitchell and Gobert have a long time to grow.

You can't count on them staying healthy or even on the Jazz that long. You have to strike while the iron is hot
