He can be a better 3-point shooter.

Could he be worse? :facepalm

If he can up his attempts and get that percentage into the 30s, it could open up opportunities for Gobert on the inside and create driving lanes for the likes of Mitchell and Dante Exum. Even as NBA defenses work to mitigate space and pace by switching everything defensively, the ability to stretch the floor remains among the most important facets to a successful offense.

He's never been consistent from mid range. Now he's going to hit 30%? :rolleyes

Around this same time last year, nobody predicted the Utah Jazz to accomplish these feats, especially after losing All-Star Gordon Hayward to Boston in free agency.

If Rubio maintains that type of production through the season, he will be due for a large contract, one the Jazz will be happy to provide.

probably

Derrick Favors signed a two-year, $33 million contract this summer, with only one year guaranteed. There is a good chance this is Favors' final year in a Jazz uniform, and it will be worth monitoring whether he keeps his starting job or not.

Can't see anyone else on the roster starting ahead of him

The Jazz net rating exploded after acquiring Jae Crowder at the trade deadline, largely because of their ability to play one big and four wings offensively. Favors has been working on his 3-point jump shot, and if it becomes a legitimate weapon, he will open up interesting options for the offense.

He will never be a threat from 3

Jae Crowder will be the Jazz's sixth man, after averaging starters minutes despite being acquired at the trade deadline for Rodney Hood. Crowder is inconsistent as a shooter, but could see his numbers improve now that he has a better grasp of the Jazz offense.

But Dante is 6th man of the year.

If Exum can show better play-making skills and improve his shooting, he can be a dangerous offensive weapon. But those flashes have been few and far between so far in his career. Still, Exum's defense is an asset, and anything the Jazz get offensively will be a bonus.

and hold on to the ball and finish...

Truthfully, Sefolosha is a more complete player than Crowder, but is older and on the downside of his career. He may be more useful in spot minutes. Still, Sefolosha would have been a valuable asset in the playoffs, and the Jazz will be happy to have him back in the lineup.

at least every other game anyway

Raul Neto is the ideal third-string point guard for a team like the Jazz. He's got a limited upside, but makes very few mistakes when asked to take on a bigger role in case of injury. His small size makes it hard to play him in a larger role, but with Rubio, Mitchell and Exum ahead of him, its unlikely he'll be needed much.

He was a solid starter and back-up. Certainly better than Dante and better than Rubio much of the year

Alec Burks is entering the final year of a four-year contract he signed with the Jazz. Understanding there is little potential for him as a long-term Jazzman, there isn't much incentive for Quin Snyder to play him. Burks can provide change-of-pace minutes as a scorer, but shouldn't be a serious part of the rotation.

No incentive other than he's one his best offensive players.

“I’m excited for Dante after some of the injuries and things like that,” Sefolosha said. “I think he had a great summer, and it shows with the speed and athleticism, he got that right back, so I’m excited about that.”

He already had that. Has he learned how to play basketball yet?

His career-high 8.1 points per game and 3.1 assists won’t jump off the page for most, but considering the circumstances of what he had to overcome to hit the court makes it more remarkable.

Remarkable? Just a lot of excuses from where I sit

Exum separated his left shoulder during the preseason, which required surgery, before returning to the lineup in March as the Jazz were in the midst of a strong postseason push. His versatility was on display in the playoffs, where he even found defensive success against Houston Rockets MVP James Harden during the Western Conference Semifinals, which ultimately earned him a three-year, $33 million extension this summer.

Now he's versatile? He can defend and what else? :confusedshrug:

“What he did was exceedingly difficult. He joined a very high functioning playoff team as a 22-year-old and played very well,” said Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey. “We actually went through that exercise with the coaches when we were looking at alternatives, and I think in retrospect when the coaches got to see him play those minutes that they were surprised at how many games in those last 14 games that he played well and allowed us to increase the margin from the bench.

And was unplayable in round 1. The Jazz needed offense against Houston. He did nothing but hurt them at that end

Exum’s on-court abilities have never been a concern within the Jazz organization; it’s been his health. Since being selected fifth overall in the 2014 NBA draft, Exum has played less and less since his rookie campaign where he suited up for all 82 games. He missed his sophomore season after tearing his ACL while playing for his Australian national team in the summer of 2015, then underwent shoulder surgery last October to stabilize his AC joint, which nearly kept him out for another full season.

It should be a concern because he has mostly sucked. It's not like Embiid who has been hurt but dominated when he played

This summer, Exum went into the mindset of being able to lead at different aspects of the game. He participated in competitive Rico Hines UCLA Runs, alongside teammate Rudy Gobert, where he competed against NBA peers to improve at transition pushes, pull-up treys and pick and roll reads versus different styles of play.

Pull up 3 is now part of the extensive arsenal eh? :lol

With all that he’s had to overcome, most people forget that Exum just turned 23 years old on July 13. As a 6-foot-6 point guard, Exum will have to compete for minutes with teammates Donovan Mitchell, Ricky Rubio, Raul Neto and even rookie guard Grayson Allen to some extent. His versatility may help him earn the playing time, but Exum doesn’t see it as a problem with how deep this year’s roster is.

23, his speed and length are the only things he has going for him

“Obviously, my preference is to play point guard,” Exum said. “That’s what I’ve done, that’s what I’ve been and it’s what got me here, but I’m a bigger guard and I can guard 1 through 3 and hopefully can play 1 through 3 and hopefully get an opportunity sometime this season early on where we can play me, Ricky and Donovan together and see how that combo goes.

With the Jazz there are basically two positions. bigs and others. You need to be versatile. He's the least versatile guy.

How many more days until the next article to hype Exum?

After the Utah Jazz won 29 of their last 35 games in the 2017-18 season, NBA fans wondered if they were real, if the success was viable. Utah was the hottest team in the league post All-Star break and then picked up a convincing series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs last spring. Instead of shaking things up, the Jazz bet on themselves to keep the good times rolling into the 2018-19 season.

The best is Houston and they didn't hang with them. Makes no sense to bring back guys that Snyder doesn't even like!

“The lesson: Fool’s gold can sometimes, um, fool you. Are the Jazz headed down that path?”

Knowing the Jazz history probably. Already did it with Exum. Favors and Rubio could be next. :rant

Based on the offseason, did the Jazz stagnate?

Not much doubt about it. They need shooting and brought back the same non shooters. :facepalm

Continuity, in this writer’s opinion, is what puts the Jazz in the discussion as a top-three Western Conference team alongside the Golden State Warriors (who return their All-Stars and know their roles, system) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (who return their All-Stars and know their roles, system).

You can have continuity and still tweak the roster. Neto only makes sense because he is Rudy's buddy. Hard to see him being back next year. Thabo was platooning with the one guy that is gone. How does he make sense other than he's one of their best players? He'll be gone in a year. Burks should be gone but I'm sure they are holding out for a big payday at the trade deadline before the ultimate buyout. Udoh makes little sense when they bring back Favors who makes little sense especially with Bradley looking ready for a look. He could be back if they finally let Favors go. Exum sucks. 1 year or a lot less money would have made sense. 3 years and a bunch of money is ridiculous. And Rubio...

The discussion of Utah’s continuity should start with the big dude standing 7-foot-1. Gobert is a counter to Powell’s original point, but the Stifle Tower could also prove it, simply with his health. The Jazz went streaking as soon as Gobert was back at full strength and playing in crunch time. It was no coincidence as Gobert is the engine that fueled the run to the playoffs, and to his own coronation as the Defensive Player of the Year. When Gobert is healthy, the Jazz are elite. When Gobert is injured, the Jazz may be a Portland-like disappointment.

Which is reason #1 you tweak the roster. They suck without Rudy. They need to be at least competitive without him. That day might finally be coming with Mitchell but until it is you need to find answers.

And then there’s Donovan Mitchell, the rookie sensation. With a more consistent three-point shot, perhaps more ball-handling and play-making, will he take a step forward from a memorable year one? If so, the Jazz are a better team from a year ago. Factor Royce O’Neale into that equation as well. He came alive in January to became a key member in the rotation so what does his player development arc look like now? Does he help push the team into another level, or could he be a cause the team simply stays afloat?

Gobert, Mitchell and Ingles would all get better if they had reliable shooters around them to spread the floor

And we haven’t even really talked about Dante Exum as an X-factor either. How many summers have we heard front office personnel say that getting an injured player back was the proverbial “biggest free agent acquisition”? Can the same be said for the Australian X?

We've heard it about Thabo and Exum. One sucks and the other guy platooned! :wtf:

As for Marbury, you can make the case that the 41-year-old belongs in the Hall of Fame. He played in the NBA for 13 years, averaging 19 points and eights assists over 846 games, then finished his career in China, where he dominated the CBA for eight years. He was such a fun player to watch and accomplished so much during his career.

Yeah, the assembled media laughed, as did podium mate Alec Burks. But while it looked like a joke, and sounded like a joke, Favors was not joking. In fact, he recoiled when a reporter insinuated he was.

Rudy Gobert knocked down some threes at the three-point contest.

Everyone did even Haas and Udoh

The Raptors look like a very well-built roster. They have a solid starting lineup of Kyle Lowry, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Serge Ibaka, and Jonas Valanciunas. With former Ute Delon Wright, former jazzman CJ Miles, sophomore OG Anunoby, Greg Monroe, and other depth pieces, on paper I would slot them just underneath Boston for second in the East. Barring injury or drama, the Raptors could very well make some noise in a LeBron-less East this season.

I'm going Tuesday!

I attended the player meet-and-greet on Friday, and three players that impressed me there were Rudy Gobert, Derrick Favors, and Dante Exum. Those three have very obviously put in a lot of work this offseason, and it shows in their bodies. Rudy has gotten jacked, Favors has slimmed down while maintaining key muscle mass, and Dante simply looks bigger. It will be exciting to see what these three are able to bring to the table this year.

Is that going to help Dante finish or hold on to the ball? :confusedshrug:

How about Alec Burks? Alec has to be a man on a mission this season. After finally recovering from injury and returning to form, this is the season he needs to prove to the league that he belongs. It will be difficult, with the Mariana Trench of wing depth the Jazz have this season, but Burks looks to be neck-and-neck with competition for that precious playing time.

He proved it last year. Hopefully he'll be on another team by March

[QUOTE]Bringing this back around, Dante impressed me very much. I loved his competitive spirit in the meet-and-greet 3pt contest, he was locked in and I believe had the best single run out of anybody that participated that night. He was ecstatic and emphatic when he beat Ricky Rubio. He could possibly be the most competitive player on this team, and could bring a very valuable will to win

The second unit does have an excuse: with Dante Exum not playing due to knee soreness (which is apparently very minor, by the way), Grayson Allen had to take over lead point guard responsibilities. Allen stayed aggressive (good!) but didn’t read the changing defense well, resulting in turnovers and bad looks.

Exum being out is not an excuse. The guy sucks! Allen definitely isn't ready to play the point. Burks looked good with the ball in his hands especially in the first half

But O’Neale’s ability to force even the league’s stars into taking those tough shots — even if they’re able to make them — makes him such a valuable addition to the Jazz’s roster, and even a candidate for the Jazz’s highest minute-earning guard off the bench.

The fact that he isn't an offensive liability like Exum is what makes him valuable.

But on the offensive end, Gobert is already showing some interesting nuances to his game. The Jazz are feeding him near, and sometimes even under, the basket. These last two games Gobert has been able to use his strength to go up for easy lay-ins.

That's nothing new. There were more lobs last night than maybe I've ever seen. Those shots weren't there last year because of their lack of spacing though. It's like people don't even pay attention. :wtf:

You also notice that the Jazz have some big expiring contracts. If the Jazz are in the running for a big free agent next offseason, half of that pie can be removed to make room.

Be happy if Rubio, Favors and Exum were.

That lineup he mentions with Crowder at the 5 could very easily be something they go to briefly in a playoff series when they struggle to score. Like when Houston was switching everything. Jazz can absolutely defend Houston without a true center

In his first four years as head coach, Snyder redefined what a Jazz power forward looks like and does. He drafted Trey Lyles, signed Trevor Booker, two stretch fours. After Booker and Lyles, it was Boris Diaw and Joe Johnson.

Booker shot 3. Wouldn't call him a stretch 4 though :lol

Malone ended his career as the franchise leader in points and second all-time on the NBA points career points list. Boozer was a 20/10 player and was the leading scorer in his two most productive seasons in 2006-07 and 2007-08. But when Paul Millsap inherited the role, he was not the leading scorer. He was the first non 20/10 starting power forward (outside of Kirilenko) in decades. Favors has deviated even further with his averages of 13/8 during his years as a starter.

Millsap should have been their leading scorer.

The one thing about Favors attitude that was alluded to earlier is that he has always given his all to get better. It seems like every summer we see a picture of him on social media working to improve and stay in shape. It is very likely that Favors will come back this season sporting improved shooting or maybe even a more respectable three point shot, despite entering his 9th season.

the past few summers since he moved to Utah anyway. Before that we saw little to no improvement in his game

Even though he may never be a three point assassin in the likeness of teammate Joe Ingles, he will need to be able space the floor in order for coach Quin Snyder to keep him on the floor in small ball situations. If Favors can be at least respectable from three point range this season, it will be incredibly valuable to have him in the game to spread the floor for Donovan Mitchell and Ricky Rubio on offense. That combined with Favors-Gobert frontcourt wreaking havoc on the defensive end could make for one of the best starting five lineups in the entire league.

why would anyone think he become respectable though?

Jazz fans are almost universally rooting for Favors to succeed and to be a part of this team. It is easy to cheer for a player who sacrifices any individual success to that of the team. If the Jazz are to go on a championship run, Derrick Favors will need to play a big role.

A championship run won't happen with him starting at the 4

Of course, the Jazz will absolutely, certainly, without a doubt, be exercising their team options on Donovan Mitchell* and Royce O’Neale, who are massive steals for their current paychecks. Tony Bradley should also get his options picked up as well as a high-upside prospect*. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Jazz don’t lock in Raul Neto, given that he started 53 games his rookie year and has always been willing to come off of the bench and give really solid minutes as a third string point guard. That leaves us with $41.1 million in cap space to work with.

Only reason I see Neto on the team is because of Rudy. He needs to be let loose to someone that can appreciate him

Having these expiring contracts can be extremely useful as trade pieces to allow for rapid salary relief if necessary, though they likely won’t be seen as such. Thabo and Ekpe are definitely steals at their current contracts, and Derrick, Ricky, and Alec can all be extremely productive for any team, so most teams trading for them would actually probably want some guarantee that they would resign. With the possible exception of Alec, the Jazz would be giving their trading partner a player that produces above their contract, so this route likely won’t make sense. That said, perhaps the Jazz find a star available at the deadline and the other team is looking to do a full tear-down-and-rebuild. Expiring contracts with upside are exactly what would be called for in that case.

I'd be looking to move all those guys but I would have last year too

Out of the likely free agent class, only Kyrie, Klay, Kemba, and Jimmy Butler would probably command the full max, but Middleton, Harris, Mirotic, would likely come close. Names I’d like to see the Jazz really lock in on this upcoming offseason would be Klay Thompson, Khris Middleton, Tobias Harris, and Nikola Mirotic, in that order.

Harris and Mirotic will definitely be on their radar. My guess is Favors and Ricky get the money though.

One thing that might be extremely interesting to skim through is the list of all players in the NBA listed by salary—a great source for this article—to get a perspective on what salary is commanded by which players (and how ridiculously Golden State has gotten away with contract murder). With that in mind, the Jazz have truly been set up with an amazingly favorable contract situation, with no real overpays and tons of flexibility to accommodate any future iteration of the Jazz. What do you think the Jazz should do with their expiring contract situation? Tell us in the comments below.

Per 36 minutes, Exum averaged 11 points and nearly nine assists per game. He attacked the hoop without fear and, in doing so, generated offense for himself and others to great effect. His length and lateral quickness continued to shine on defense as well. When he was on the floor, the Jazz held opponents to just 80.2 points per 100 possessions.

There will be more deserving players, no doubt, but playing with LeBron may allow Brandon Ingram to shine. It also helps that he plays in one of the biggest markets of the league, so more eyes will be on him than anybody else. We saw this effect with a certain Rookie of the Year winner last year, as Joel Embiid drew eyes to the large-market 76ers. Dante Exum is going to show the league why he got paid. It will seemingly come out of nowhere, and with a little extra media attention, somebody has got to notice. Same with Alec, after finally coming back from injuries and looking like a new-and-improved version of himself, he will have the minutes early on in the year to put up some big scoring numbers. Boban Marjanovic is a runner up because he looked dang good in preseason.

One thing Exum has never shown is that he's a scorer. Why would anyone think he's going to put up a bunch of points? Assists maybe. :wtf:

Doubt they win the one game they won if Rubio has the ball instead of Mitchell. :facepalm

The Jazz add Thabo Sefolosha (back from a season-ending injury), Grayson Allen, and add another year of experience to a lineup that improved dramatically in the second half of season.

Let's begin with the boldest of the bold. You just can't get any more bold than this. But if the Jazz -- specifically Rudy Gobert -- are healthy and resemble the team that ended last year's regular season on a 29-6 romp, with the NBA's best defense (by far), then this isn't outside the realm of possibility even in a world where the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets reside in the same conference. It would take Donovan Mitchell to make the All-Star team and be in the MVP conversation, and Ricky Rubio to build on his shooting efficiency from last season. Dante Exum would need to stay healthy, and Jae Crowder would need to turn back the clock a couple years. But it could happen. The Jazz are one of the best-run organizations in the sport.

Would take fixing the roster and replacing Rubio and Favors with shooters. Exum might have to be injured as well. :rant

If Mitchell progresses at the same rate he did in his rookie season, he'll make the second-year jump the Jazz are expecting from him this season. That would make him a shoo-in All-Star if he were in the East. He'll have to be that much better in the West, where an already incredible slate of A-list stars has been joined by LeBron James. Still, Mitchell will post impressive numbers (and the Jazz will have an impressive record) and make the All-Star squad. It'll be just as difficult for Jokic to make the Western Conference All-Star team, but given the Nuggets' high-flying offense and the confidence Jokic played with the last couple months last season, when he realized the Nuggets were his team, difficult does not mean impossible. In a much easier Eastern Conference, Myles Turner will make the jump many expected from him last season to become an excellent two-way player and an All-Star, shooting in the high 30s from three and averaging 2.5 blocks per game.

Gobert was already robbed by Hayward. Now Mitchell?

The next morning, newspapers nationwide featured a photo of Miller throttling one of the Denver fans.

What a guy!

Dantley went on to a Hall of Fame career and had his number retired at Vivint Arena.
